Met een open gezicht komt Brent van Rensburg naar ons toe. Het klikt erg snel. “Ik heb meer dan 17 jaar in Europa gewerkt als vlieger in een vliegende trapezegroep. Dan keerde ik met mijn Franse vrouw, Laurence Estève, terug naar mijn geboorteland om mijn volgende droom waar te maken: een circusschool oprichten die een microkosmos zou zijn van de nieuwe regenboognatie die op dat moment, in 1994, zijn eerste stappen zette. Na 14 jaar staat er deze heel mooie, grote tent. Midden centrum-Kaapstad en buur van het Artscape, de majestueuze cultuurtempel van de stad.”
Circus als hefboom
Brent is nu niet meer te stoppen. Circus is duidelijk zijn passie. “Ik wou het circus gebruiken als hefboom voor sociale verandering. Ik wou aantonen dat integratie tussen vele culturen lukt. Maar dan moet je wel werk maken van teamwork, respect, eerlijkheid en vertrouwen.”
“We wilden vooral het familiegevoel weer versterken en vaak voor het eerst teruggeven aan minder fortuinlijke kinderen,” zegt zijn vrouw Laurence. “Kinderen zijn niet zo kleurgevoelig om samen te werken en als het hier lukt, staan ze meer open voor een multiculturele samenleving. Met die boodschap trekken we ook de townships in als we een circusprogramma voor hen maken. Blank, zwart en bruin samen, het kan. Zie maar hoe wij dit doen.”
Lokale helden
Zip Zap heeft verschillende cursusniveaus. Zo is er het initiatieprogramma voor kinderen tussen de 7 en 12 jaar. Ze krijgen zowel circus als dans en muziek. Het is een echt speels ontdekkingstraject. Het jeugdprogramma, voor 13 à 16-jarigen, werkt vooral door op een specialisme die de jongeren zelf kiezen. Ze participeren zelf ook al in eigen producties en de focus ligt op teamwork en discipline. Jongeren die dan verder willen werken, kunnen terecht in de professionele training. Gedurende achttien maanden wordt zes dagen per week intens samengewerkt. Ondertussen helpen deze ‘studenten’ mee aan de jongerencursussen en zijn ze leraar in de outreach programma’s. Deze trekken naar de townshipkliniek Nogungile in het Kaapse Khayelitsha waar ze samenwerken met aids-besmette kinderen. Vaak zijn het weeskinderen die worden uitgesloten uit hun eigen leefgroep. Zo kunnen ze hun status van slachtoffer en patiënt weer ombuigen tot lokale helden die iets heel bijzonder kunnen. Dit programma wordt door Cirque du Soleil gesponsord. Kaapstad sponsort dan weer het andere outreach dat met Kaapse straatkinderen werkt. Opnieuw integreren in hun eigen gemeenschap, via het opbouwen van een positief rolmodel, is daar dé focus.
Meisjes in de lucht
Je voelt aan alles dat Brent een echte circusartiest is. We zagen stukjes van Zip Zap producties: professioneel geluid en belichting, acts die tot in de puntjes af zijn met vaak heel moeilijke werkstukjes. Het geheel straalt energie uit en is erg toegankelijk voor een groot publiek. Al pratend toont Brent de hele tent. Ondertussen stuurt hij nog, kort en krachtig, de veiligheid bij van oefenende jongeren. Maar je proeft vooral dat Brent een luchtacrobaat is. De meeste meisjes kiezen voor luchtnummers. Zuid-Afrika was overigens decennia lang erg bekend voor zijn vliegende trapeze-acts. Buiten de tent staat dan ook een knappe vliegende trapeze-instalatie. “Zelfs met de 15 meter hoge tent kon deze er niet meer bij,” zegt Brent olijk.
Het is indrukwekkend wat Brent en Laurence op veertien jaar realiseerden. Wie ervaring wil opdoen met circus als sociale veranderaar of professioneel wil uitgroeien als luchtacrobaat of trapezist, kan deze professionele school zeker niet links laten liggen.
