Onuitputtelijk, onverzadigbaar, onvermoeibaar: zo gaat, loopt, vliegt en rent grote dame van het moderne circus in België, Catherine Magis, heen en weer. De oprichtster van Espace Catastrophe, ‘een verlopen koorddanseres’, zoals ze zichzelf graag omschrijft, is nog net even enthousiast als de allereerste dag en wijkt nergens voor terug, behalve voor het banale dan. En als er iemand is in heel België die een waanzinnige uitdaging als ‘Complicités’ durft aan te gaan, dan is zij het wel.
Véronique Chapelle, directeur van Créahm Bruxelles (Créativité et handicap mental – creativiteit en mentale handicap) klopte dus wel degelijk bij de juiste deur aan toen ze het plan opvatte om haar geliefde gehandicapten op een circuspiste te laten plaatsnemen. We maakten eerder al kennis met hun beeldend talent in de cinema, dankzij de film ‘Le huitième jour’ of, dat herinnert u zich vast ook nog wel, in het theater, in ‘Chez Lucien’, een juweeltje dat werd opgevoerd in de Varia. Maar dat is natuurlijk nog wat anders dan ze te zien jongleren, in de Chinese mast klimmen of de trapezeacrobaat uithangen, een evenwichtsoefening waaraan niemand zich al eerder had gewaagd.
Niemand, behalve Catherine Magis en Véronique Chapelle dan, een dynamisch duo dat er niet voor terugdeinst om de wetten van de gewichtloosheid te tarten. En om het publiek te veroveren, zoals tijdens de première in de Varia op 3 februari 2011: de toeschouwers zaten vastgenageld aan hun stoel, sterk onder de indruk van de pirouettes, de tedere toets en komische noot. Axel Stainier, een clown in supervorm, spuwt massa’s pingpongballetjes uit die de zaal overspoelen. Volgen nog Sarah Cusse, die dolgelukkig met haar rolschaatsen over de scène rijdt, de ‘Envolées voilées’ van Edouardo Della Faille, de vlinderman, of Damjan Diklic, de tovenaar met trotse uitstraling wanneer het laken rond zijn lichaam verandert in een keizerlijke cape. De muziek is van Max Vandervorst, de unieke ongetemde instrumentenmaker met zijn kartonnen orkest dat bestaat uit tapellofoon, ukulele en neusfluit.
De circusartiesten en acteurs zijn heuse medeplichtigen en geven de mensen met het down-syndroom repliek, ondersteuning, kracht en lichtheid in main-à-main-acrobatie, het werk met de luchtriemen, de tango of de hoepel. Zelfs het roue Cyr is van de partij, met zoveel nuances, respect en fijngevoeligheid dat je soms zelfs niet meer weet wie wie is. Noch aan welke kant de ‘normaliteit’ zich bevindt. De osmose is totaal. De medewerkers stellen zich nederig ten dienste van de nummers die werden bedacht door onze mentaal gehandicapte artiesten. Een grote les.
CircusMagazine: Vertel eens, hoe is het project precies ontstaan?
Catherine Magis: “Véronique Chapelle kwam me opzoeken in 2008 en vertelde me dat ze van plan was om een circusvoorstelling te maken met mentaal gehandicapten. Elk jaar moet ze een nieuw project indienen, en dit keer wilde ze iets met circus doen. Ik was er meteen voor te vinden. Vooral omdat het iets totaal nieuws voor me was. Ik had nog nooit gewerkt met mentaal gehandicapten, en vond het een interessante uitdaging. Ik wilde vooral eens iets anders doen. Maar ik heb haar meteen gezegd dat dit meer dan een jaar in beslag zou nemen. Het maken van de voorstelling duurde drie jaar, en nu kunnen we ze eindelijk brengen!”
Hoe bent u te werk gegaan bij het maken van de voorstelling?
“We zijn begonnen met audities die zes maanden hebben geduurd! Daarna heb ik de artiesten langdurig, regelmatig en geduldig geïnterviewd, om te weten te komen wie ze zijn en welke dromen ze hebben, want vanaf het moment waarop ik aan een voorstelling met mentaal gehandicapten begon, wilde ik dat het geheel van hen uitging. Ik wilde niet dat ze nummertjes opvoerden zoals circusaapjes, dat interesseerde me helemaal niet.”
Vonden ze het makkelijk om over zichzelf te praten?
“Niet altijd. De meest getalenteerden waren soms ook het meest geremd, maar voor Virginie bijvoorbeeld, die nooit het achterste van haar tong laat zien, was het heel duidelijk. Zij droomde ervan om met Philippe te trouwen op een boot in de Noordzee. Daar kwam ze openlijk voor uit, en daarom hebben we haar een bruidsjurk aangetrokken. Daarna hebben Philippe en zij zich ‘verloofd’ in Espace Catastrophe. Het was een groot feest, een echt verlovingsfeest. Thomas, die de bijnaam ‘de plus’ kreeg, want iedereen had een bijnaam, wilde dolgraag Johnny Halliday zijn, maar omdat hij gevoelsmatig nogal vaak van het ene uiterste in het andere valt, moesten we hem in bedwang proberen te houden. Edouardo wilde zich dan weer voortdurend als vrouw verkleden. Voor zijn familie was dat niet eenvoudig, maar voor mij was het essentieel dat de voorstelling oprecht bleef en hun eigenheid weerspiegelde. De ouders woonden regelmatig de repetities bij, en uiteindelijk hebben de voorstelling, en de mediatisering ervan, de kijk op hun eigen kind soms veranderd.”
Hoe bent u er ondanks alles in geslaagd ze te laten jongleren, ze helemaal tot in de nok te laten klimmen of door de lucht te slingeren?
“Daar was geduld voor nodig, veel geduld, volharding, enorm veel werk en vooral vertrouwen. In het begin vond ik het zelfs moeilijk om ze op een krukje te laten klimmen. Ik moest ook de animatoren van de workshops inleiden in de circustechnieken. Ik heb alles rustig de tijd gegeven. We hebben uren en uren gewerkt. We repeteerden soms zelfs zes tot zeven uur per dag. Ik legde hen uit dat als ze een professionele voorstelling wilden maken, ze het als hun beroep moesten beschouwen.”
Was u niet bang voor de fysieke gevaren die gepaard kunnen gaan met een dergelijk project?
“Nee, voor mij waren de risico’s vooral van psychologische orde. Psychologisch hadden ze kunnen instorten.”
En hoe bent u, afgezien van de interviews, te werk gegaan op artistiek vlak? Wat was uw werkmethode?
“Voor mij was het sleutelbegrip voor het project de ontmoeting. Het is niet toevallig dat ‘Complicités’ de ondertitel ‘Aujourd’hui, je suis content d’être ensemble’ heeft. Daarom dacht ik ook aan peters als Jordi Saval. Elke artiest had een eigen peter. Ik heb ook een beroep gedaan op Jean-Michel Frère en Didier de Neck voor de dramaturgie. En daarna was er natuurlijk het gegeven van de medeplichtigen; de essentie van het hele project volgens mij. In de loop van het project vonden er ook verschuivingen plaats, want de acteur Jean-Luc Piraux, die eerst peter was, werd vervolgens medeplichtige voor het trio van de clowns ‘Papy Muse’ and co… Ook voor de medeplichtigen, die ook op de piste stonden, was het een groot avontuur.”
En wat was uw werkwijze voor de regie en scenografie? Ik veronderstel dat er enige flexibiliteit nodig was?
“Ja, dat klopt. Ik moest natuurlijk wel de ruimte afbakenen en een tijdskader creëren. Uiteindelijk heb ik gekozen voor een open kader, een beetje zoals David O’Connor in ‘Singing in the rain’. Ik wist dat de voorstelling er elke avond anders zou uitzien en dat het kader dus redelijk flexibel moest zijn, daarom heb ik gekozen voor het hier en nu.”
Wat was het moeilijkste aan het project?
“We werden voortdurend geconfronteerd met hindernissen, maar we konden ze altijd snel oplossen, omdat het project vol toevalligheden zat, onverwachte ontmoetingen, welkome vondsten. We moesten telkens weer vooruit, ook op de moeilijkste momenten.”
“Het moeilijkste was eigenlijk om financiële steun los te krijgen van de Federatie Wallonië-Brussel. Uiteindelijk kregen we in 2010 een envelop van 20.000 euro van Education permanente en 15.000 euro van de sector circuskunsten, kermiskunsten en straatkunsten. We dienden ook een dossier in bij de Interdisciplinaire Raad voor oprichtingssteun ten belope van 36.000 euro. De Raad bracht begin februari 2011 een unaniem positief advies uit bij de minister van Cultuur van de Federatie Wallonië-Brussel, Fadila Laanan, dat, tegen alle verwachtingen in, werd gevolgd door een… negatief antwoord van de minister in augustus 2011. Deze weigering heeft geleid tot een aanzienlijk tekort, dat we nu moeten aanvaarden.”
Welke kijk hebt u vandaag op ‘Complicités’?
“Het mooiste avontuur van mijn leven. Het was ongelooflijk, vol gelukkige momenten. Met hen kun je niet vals spelen, je bent altijd eerlijk. Precies het soort menselijke relaties waarvan je droomt.”
Catherine Magis vertelt, laat zich meeslepen, vertelt over de Don Quichotes op de piste, de reizen naar Belgrado, Servië, de deodorant van de grote Michel Malchair die in beslag werd genomen bij de douane omdat hij niet wist dat hij geen vloeistoffen mee aan boord mocht nemen, de XL T-shirts en onderbroeken die hij in de trompetten van de muzikanten had gepropt omdat zijn koffer overvol zat… En als het ‘Quartier libre’ in de Luxemburgwijk in Brussel ons niet had buitengezet omdat ze gingen sluiten, zou ze nu nog aan het praten zijn. Nooit uitgepraat volgens ons.
