Een redactielid van Circusmagazine laat zijn of haar licht schijnen op de wonderlijke (circus)wereld. Klom deze keer in de pen: Ine Van Baelen.
Of ik de volgende Entree wil schrijven, mailt hoofdredacteur Maarten me. Ik reken uit: 3.500 tekens x 0,02 eurocent = ik kan er €70 mee verdienen. Honger lijd ik niet, want ik ontvang een werkloosheidsuitkering. Maar ik mis de validering van betaalde arbeid nu de theaterzalen al maanden gesloten blijven. Dus zeg ik ja. Zo zit ik op een ochtend voor een wit blad.
3.165 tekens later zal dit blad nog even wit zijn. Want wit ben ik, met blond haar en blauwe ogen. Sociaaleconomisch bevoorrecht ook, mijn vader kan zich een tuinfeest met cateraar veroorloven. Nog andere voordelen: mijn achternaam wekt geen argwaan, ik krijg belastinggeld en kan mijn belastingen betalen. Soms noem ik het neus-mondmasker dat vergroeid lijkt met mijn gezicht liefkozend ‘muilkorfje’, maar eigenlijk heb ik net makkelijk praten. Vink maar af: ik heb een stem, en toegang tot kanalen om gehoord te worden.
Ik ben nog net geen man; ik heb het geweld van mannen ervaren. Nageroepen, geïntimideerd, gevraagd om een seksuele tegenprestatie. Check, op vlak van gender ben ik in het nadeel.
Nee, een statement valt er met mij niet te maken. Er is in feite momenteel weinig behoefte aan de gedachten van mensen zoals ik.
Het ding is: ik kom er nogal gemakkelijk mee weg. En van gemak word je gemakzuchtig. Hashtagje delen, pluimpje voor mezelf. Het moet oncomfortabeler worden. Als het je een goed gevoel geeft, zoals meedoen aan Donderdag Veggiedag, dan is het niet genoeg.
Dus is het goed dat iemand als danser en circusdocent Rachid Boulahrir (p. 28) je een spiegel voorhoudt wanneer hij bedankt voor het nummertje van multiculturele spokesperson dat je hem onwillekeurig had willen laten opvoeren. Dat je als monoculturele redactie waakzaam moet zijn om etnisch-culturele en artistieke identiteit niet door elkaar te halen, of te willen laten samenvallen. Het exotisme van Tibetaanse gebedsvlaggetjes op je gastentoilet hangen.
Of dat er schuurpapiertjes zoals Bauke Lievens zijn, die een laagje oppervlakkige glans weet af te halen van wat je altijd als vanzelfsprekend beschouwde en de broze lagen daaronder bloot kan leggen. Ze sleepte net de Vlaamse circusprijs in de wacht en krast verderop in dit magazine (p. 14) in haar en onze circusziel, een tube zalf in de aanslag.
En komaan, moet een al vervelende lockdown niet nog veel langer duren, omdat de uitsluitingsmechanismen besmettelijker zijn dan gedacht? Moet met mij het hele culturele veld nog wat dieper wegzakken, tot we groepsimmuniteit bereiken tegen onze eigen verworvenheden, de hardnekkigheid van productiedwang, unfair practices en onethische werkmethodes? En stellen we – in afwachting en bij wijze van experimentele therapie – de bubbels dan eens anders samen, meer hybride, minder ivoren toren?
Het is al avond. Ik maak me zorgen dat de €70 niet goed besteed is aan mijn woorden, schrap nog een handvol tekens. Een beetje minder ruimte innemen. “Maar zie je niet, je weet toch zeker dat die bubbel bijna barst dan,” zingt Eefje De Visser. Ze heeft het over liefdesverdriet, de grote pijn van het loslaten van wat geweest is, maar niet langer kan zijn. Ik maak me klaar om verwond te worden.
