Circus heeft sinds jaar en dag een belangrijke sociale functie: publiek, beoefenaars en artiesten van allerlei pluimage worden ertoe aangetrokken en erdoor opgenomen. Maar is er de laatste jaren geen kentering merkbaar, nu circus hoe langer hoe meer een mainstream kunstvorm en vrijetijdsbesteding wordt?
Bart Haes (50) ligt mee aan de basis van Circusplaneet en Circusvlo en zetelt in de Raad van Bestuur van het Circuscentrum. Naast zijn ‘zotte’ rol als presentator van het Jeugdcircusfestival staat hij ook bekend om zijn kritische blik op de circuskunsten: “Met projecten voor aparte doelgroepen accentueert het circus te veel de verschillen. En dat heet discriminatie.”
“Circus is, al eeuwen lang, de kunstvorm bij uitstek waar iedereen, ras, geslacht, lichaamsbouw of geloof, mekaar vond. In de piste was iedereen gelijk: allemaal verschillend. Was? Was.
Zeven jaar geleden heeft iemand, met een kloppend hart, het zo ver gekregen dat het OCMW een eenwieler heeft bekostigd voor Kelly. Haar beide broers volgden toen ook circusles. Gratis.
Vandaag gaan begeleiders naar de wijken, de gemeenschappen, om daar ‘projecten’ uit te voeren. Met circus. Leuk. Zolang deze projecten duren. Daarna gaat iedereen weer over tot de orde van de dag.
Als we de knowhow van deze gedreven begeleiders nu eens zouden gebruiken om de omgekeerde beweging te maken? Geen aparte projecten, maar een reguliere werking die open staat voor iedereen, en die er werk van maakt om kansarmen meer kansen te geven, zodat zij hun anders zijn kunnen inbrengen, zodat zij op hun manier het circus kunnen verrijken.
Ik mis het samen-gevoel; de benadering van iedereen, of ze nu ADHD hebben, autist zijn, Franstalig of bruin zijn, dyslectisch zijn, geen geld/papieren hebben: ze moeten welkom zijn. Sommige hoogvliegers van het huidige circus in Vlaanderen lijden aan minstens één van bovenstaande kenmerken. Omdat het andere, het aparte, werd aangewend als hefboom. Het werd een kwaliteit.
Ik hoop dat ze welkom blijven, of worden (inclusie!). Om méé te doen, en niet om benaderd te worden als aparte doelgroepen. Want dan accentueren wij de verschillen (wij – zij). En dat heet discriminatie. En dat willen we niet. Of wel?”
Danny Ronaldo (41) is een van de bekendste circusartiesten van België. Met Circus Ronaldo schitterde hij onder meer in ‘Fili’, ‘La Cucina dell’Arte’ en in het huidige ‘Circenses’. Hij blijft geloven in de kracht van circus: “Circus betekent voor mij ‘samen’ in de diepste betekenis van het woord.”
“Als je eerlijk kritisch bent kan je nooit alleen maar pro zijn en als je open bent om liefde te herkennen kan je nooit alleen maar contra zijn. Circus staat als geen andere kunst dicht bij het leven en is dus als het leven zelf altijd een beetje pro & contra tegelijk. Circus is een plaats waar mensen in een magische cirkel samen komen om zichzelf en dus ook elkaar te herkennen. Circus leeft dicht bij de mens en ook al kunnen er acts met dieren zijn, de waarde ligt er steeds in hoe de mens met het dier omgaat.
Circus betekent voor mij ‘samen’ in de diepste betekenis van het woord. Een schilderij, een muziekpartituur of een theatertekst kan op zichzelf al een waardevolle betekenis hebben maar een circusvoorstelling bestaat alleen maar als er mensen samen zijn. Circus is een metafoor voor alle samenlevingen. Mensen kijken hoe mensen zijn… hoe mensen kunnen zijn, hoe mooi het lelijke is, hoe sterk de zwakke is, hoe lachwekkend het verlangen naar macht is.
Circus is een plek waar je mensen van alle rassen en de grootste verschillen samen ziet met een eenheid in de verscheidenheid. Al meer dan twee eeuwen (dus lang voor het woord emancipatie bestond) is in het circus de vrouw evenwaardig aan de man. De waardering en gage voor een circusartiest wordt bepaald door de kwaliteit en het succes van de act, ongeacht je huidskleur, je diploma, je geslacht, of je al dan niet een blanco strafregister hebt. Het circus toont dat je op je derde voorzichtig je eerste pasjes op het koord kan zetten en op je drieëntachtig nog steeds dezelfde act kan doen (ik denk aan Konrad Thurano) als je maar voldoende fantasie onderhoudt om je act steeds aan te passen aan de mogelijkheden en krachten van dat moment.
Het mooiste wat een circus kan geven in deze nieuwe wereld van technologische hoogstandjes en steeds meer opeisende perfectie is hoop. De hoop dat het bijzonder is om mens te zijn. Dat alles bijzonder is als je op een bijzondere manier kijkt. Niet elk circus geeft een sociaal beeld dat hoop geeft, maar ook niet elke roos geurt als een roos.”
