“Circus is hip”, “Circus is in”… Allemaal goed en wel, maar als dat zo is zitten we wel nog steeds met een terminaal onhippe woordenschat opgescheept.
‘Koreaans kader’ en ‘Chinese evenwichtsbordjes’ zijn bezwaarlijk flitsende termen te noemen. De woorden ‘evenwichtsladder’ en ‘partneracrobatiek’ waren in de Middeleeuwen al op hun retour, en ‘jongleerconventie’ komt qua hipheidsfactor in de buurt van ‘kantklosserscolloquium’.
Op de koop toe komt de helft van het circusvocabularium uit het Frans of het Engels en is het haast onvertaalbaar. Vindt u ‘kolom met twee’ een prima alternatief voor ‘colonne à deux’? Klinkt ‘wankelbord’ niet nog nét iets slechter dan ‘teeterboard’?
Hoog tijd dus om een reeks nieuwe namen en woorden te verzinnen en onze oubollige circuswoordenschat de 21ste eeuw binnen te loodsen. Het Antwerpse zootje ongeregeld genaamd Ell Circo d’ell Fuego gaf de symbolische aftrap. Ze kozen voor ‘Extreme Convention’ (goed) en niet voor ‘acrobatieksamenkomst’ (fout). Als eerbetoon aan deze pioniers stel ik dan ook voor om het woord ‘teeterboard’ oftewel ‘bascule’ vanaf nu consequent te vervangen door ‘d’ell Fuego-plank’, indien mogelijk op z’n Antwaarps uit te spreken.
Maar we mogen het daar niet bij laten. Circus is spannend en opwindend en grappig en soms ook een beetje gevaarlijk, en zo mag het ook klinken! En dan wordt de ‘rollabolla’ een ‘risicorol’, wordt de ‘Chinese mast’ een ‘kamikazepaal’ en vervangen we ‘salto mortale’ voor eens en voor altijd door ‘salto schedelbreuk’.
