De omgeving van Diest en Tessenderlo vormde nog een blinde vlek op de kaart. Niet dat men hier niet van circusamusement houdt, want een aantal jongeren die in Diest school lopen, leerden de stiel al bij Salto in Tienen. Maar wel tijd dat iemand ook in deze streek het initiatief nam. Het gebeurde ondertussen. Het was Joost Geuens en het circusatelier kreeg de welluidende naam ‘Circusatelier Twist’.
Twist vzw werd na een lange aanloop in januari van dit jaar opgestart. De eerste les startte meteen na het circuskamp in het krokusverlof. Zoals in Kortrijk worden de lessen circustechniek gekoppeld aan een dansopleiding. Tenminste in de statuten, want deze plannen werden voorlopig nog niet geconcretiseerd. Al zal het niet lang meer duren eer Sandra Valgaerts de cursisten laat bewegen op muziek. Sandra heb ik nog niet ontmoet, maar haar partner Joost Geuens (26) zie ik als een spring-in-het-veld die erg makkelijk inplugt op de energie van kleine kinderen en jongeren. Met zijn drive en bezieling voor het vak zal hij ongetwijfeld snel de circusmicrobe kunnen overzetten.
Een onverwachte hobby
Joost werd opgeleid als regent Lichamelijke Opvoeding en biologie en volgde daarna nog de Formation Pédagogique aan de Circusschool van Brussel. Tijdens zijn regentaatsopleiding waren de studenten verplicht nog een hobby uit te oefenen. Bij hem viel de keuze aanvankelijk op zwemmen, maar aangezien het ineens aanvoelde als een plicht, verdween ook het plezier. Daarom koos hij voor iets nieuws en volgde hij circustechniek bij Cirkus in Beweging in Leuven. Op school konden ze die onverwachte keuze wel appreciëren. Gezien zijn sportopleiding ging dit alles hem nog veel beter af dan de andere volwassenen. Logisch natuurlijk, maar wie had toen gedacht dat het ook zijn beroep had kunnen worden? Hijzelf alvast niet.
Even doorbijten
“Ik zag wel een beetje op tegen de administratieve rompslomp die bij dit alles komt kijken en daarom dat de aanloop eerder lang was. Ik heb mij daar echt moeten in vastbijten. Maar nu is de vzw een feit. Het loopt en het mag stilletjes aan groeien,” vertelt Joost. “De stad Diest stelt de turnzaal boven het zwembad ‘De Warande’ ter beschikking. In de speelgoedwinkel verkopen ze ook circusartikelen en dus liggen er ook flyers van ons. In juni bezoek ik alle scholen in Diest en er verschijnt een aankondiging in het boekje van de sportdienst. Met hen zit ik in een 80/20 formule, wat erop neerkomt dat zij een deel van de logistiek en de organisatie voor hun rekening nemen. Ik heb het onder meer over de inschrijvingen en promotionele activiteiten. Ik hoop wel dat we niemand zullen uitsluiten. Zelf deed ik al mee aan projecten rond sociale inclusie en ik ben er zeker van dat we voor gezinnen die het echt nodig hebben, op discrete wijze wel een speciale regeling kunnen treffen.”
Allrounder
“Om op te starten geef ik ‘multi’ (lessen waarin verschillende circustechnieken worden belicht, red.), maar ik wil ook snel werk maken van een vrij circusmoment om te oefenen. Net zoals Tom en Raf van Salto ben ik een goede allrounder. Ik heb dus geprobeerd zoveel mogelijk te differentiëren. Ik wil namelijk binnen elke discipline de kinderen iets kunnen bijbrengen. Het kan natuurlijk zijn dat een cursist na verloop van tijd beter wordt dan de lesgever, maar ook dan wil ik tenminste nog kunnen uitleggen hoe ik hem of haar nog hogerop kan tillen.”
Conclusie?
“Tja, circus is mijn hobby en mijn job. Het is iets waarin ik mij zoveel mogelijk kan uitleven. Voetbal is niet echt aan mij besteed, want ik ben graag bezig met heel mijn lichaam. Dus ook mijn handen moeten kunnen bewegen. Ik deed mee aan ‘Leuven in Scène’ en je ziet mij soms als circusanimator op straat. Geen acts, gewoon animatie als vuurspuwer, steltenloper of jongleur. Ik hield dit jaar ook de micro vast op de opendeurdag bij Salto om de dingen aan elkaar te praten. Ik heb dus echt de circuskriebel te pakken. Ik heb het circus gevonden en ik ben gebleven. Ik denk zelfs dat het nooit meer zal weggaan.”
