Circus als middel, niet als doel. Dat is – erg kort door de bocht – het concept van sociaal circus. Het is een krachtige tool in tal van kwetsbare contexten, hetgeen het toenemende succes ervan verklaart. Maar er is nood aan professionalisering en extra middelen, en er zijn heel wat valkuilen. Naar aanleiding van de Trefdag Sociaal Circus die Circuscentrum, Woesh en Cirque Plus in oktober organiseerden, pende expert ter zake Steven Desanghere zijn hoogstpersoonlijke bevindingen neer.

Eind vorige eeuw werd ik gebeten door het circusvirus. Ik was toen al halverwege de twintig, en via enkele vrienden leerde ik Circusplaneet in Gent kennen. Die werd toen nog voornamelijk bevolkt door een zootje ongeregeld, dat voornamelijk wilde jongleren. De frisse en geschoren acrobaten kwamen pas later aangewaaid. We wisselden voortdurend trucs en technieken uit en amuseerden ons te pletter. Het beoefenen van verschillende circustechnieken, met alle inspanning, volharding, samenwerking en succesjes, had een behoorlijke impact op me. Op een gegeven moment kreeg ik de vraag om workshops en animaties mee te verzorgen, en later ook reguliere circuslessen te geven. Intussen geef ik in binnen- en buitenland diverse trainingen voor circustrainers.
Het meest hield ik van de energie van workshops en projecten buiten het circusatelier. Met de camionette vol spullen op weg naar een braderie, een jeugdbeweging, een school, een pleintje of een instelling, en daar de plaats in vuur en vlam zetten. De fijne ontmoetingen en verbindingen die ik hierdoor maakte, zijn onmogelijk op te lijsten. Circus wérkt, zowel in de diepte als in de breedte. Circus is een van die heerlijke technieken waarbij je je Innerlijke Kind weer naar boven mag halen, de ‘normale’ conventies qua omgang met elkaar eventjes mag vergeten, en waar je elkaar mag bewonderen, bespelen, ontroeren, uitdagen en aanraken. Circus werkt bevrijdend en zorgt, mits de juiste setting, voor heel wat plezier, ontmoeting en eigenwaarde. Elementen die vaak behoorlijk schaars zijn voor heel wat mensen aan de rand van deze samenleving.
Rock ‘n’ roll
Ik heb het privilege gehad om door middel van circus zeer intens te kunnen werken met tal van mensen in de marge. Kinderen met motorische of verstandelijke beperkingen, vluchtelingen, geïnterneerden, dementen, kinderen in de bijzondere jeugdzorg of in armoede, enzovoort. Sociaal circus boomt overal, in Vlaanderen en ver daarbuiten, en niet alleen de bijzondere doelgroepen en de circusateliers merken de impact en het potentieel van sociaal circus op, maar ook de welzijnssector, de kunstensector, academici en het beleid. Tegelijk hebben vele sociaal-circusprojecten nog een stevig rock-‘n’-rollgehalte. Veel gebeurt à l’improviste, met enkele charismatische trekkers die er helemaal in vliegen. Soms met groot succes, maar evengoed met tegenslag.
Om een stand van zaken op te maken van het sociaal circus in Vlaanderen en om te onderzoeken waar de groeimogelijkheden liggen, organiseerden Circuscentrum, Woesh en Cirque Plus op 24 oktober 2017 een Trefdag. Er was heel wat schoon volk te zien in Brugge: lesgevers en coördinatoren uit diverse circusateliers van Vlaanderen, Brussel en Nederland, vormingswerkers, professionals uit diverse culturele centra, sociale sectoren en overheid. Er was eerst een boeiend paneldebat met verschillende pioniers van sociaal circus. Hier werd al gauw duidelijk dat deze discipline heel wat vormen, aanpakken en doelstellingen kent, en tegelijk heel wat gedeelde noden. Het grootste deel van de trefdag werd evenwel ingevuld door het aanwezige publiek, dat zich via verschillende gesprekstafels uitsprak over de huidige noden en hindernissen, en samen nadacht over de verschillende manieren waarop we elkaar hierin kunnen versterken.
Stap voor stap
Bij Circus Zonder Handen (Brussel) is het een kernopdracht om te werken met maatschappelijk kwetsbare kinderen en jongeren; het reguliere aanbod is toegespitst op deze doelgroep. Bij vele andere circusateliers vertaalt sociaal circus zich in eerste instantie eerder in projectmatig werken met bepaalde doelgroepen, meestal ‘schouder aan schouder’ met andere sociale werkers, die hun expertise, en vaak ook wat extra middelen, delen met het circusproject. Maar in bijna ieder project komen steevast dezelfde noden en wensen terug: men wil graag meer bekwame sociaal-circusbegeleiders, meer specifieke opleidingen, een betere profilering en zichtbaarheid, uitwerken van een methodologie voor impactmeting, meer academisch onderzoek, een aanscherping van pedagogische en artistieke visies, een eigen taal, … De roep naar structurele ondersteuning klinkt dan ook steeds luider. Een stukje professionalisering, stap voor stap naar de erkenning van sociaal circus als een volwaardige discipline.
De deelnemers aan de Trefdag kwamen met heel wat ideeën op de proppen over hoe we elkaar hierbij kunnen helpen, en welke rol Circuscentrum hierin kan spelen. Er is duidelijk meer intervisie gewenst tussen de circusateliers. Want er valt heel wat te leren van elkanders visie, aanpak en praktijken, zowel van de geslaagde als de minder geslaagde. De koudwatervrees kan aangepakt worden door meer begeleiders in het sociaal-circusbad te trekken, door goeie afspraken te maken met gemotiveerde sociale partners, door meer aangepaste en doelgroepspecifieke vormingen te ontwikkelen, en diverse inclusieve animatortrajecten op te zetten. Er is ook heel wat expertise binnen de bredere sociaal-artistieke wereld, dat nog te vaak onaangeroerd blijft door de (sociale) circuswereld. Meer sensibilisering rond de kracht van sociaal circus is gewenst, onder meer gericht op overheden, de sociale sector en culturele centra. Dit kan in de vorm van publicaties, straffe filmpjes, pakkende getuigenissen op tal van fora, enzovoort.
Professionalisering: ja, maar niet ten koste van
Ik heb de laatste jaren met heel wat sociaal-circusprojecten in binnen- en buitenland mogen kennismaken. Professionalisering en extra middelen zorgen daar geregeld voor een verankering en verduurzaming van het sociale circus, maar zijn evengoed soms een vergiftigd geschenk. Wanneer men zich ondoordacht in nieuwe sociaal-circusprojecten met bijzonder kwetsbare individuen en groepen stort, dan zijn er immers heel wat valkuilen. Kunnen wij bijvoorbeeld een veilige ruimte blijven garanderen voor alle deelnemers en op maat blijven werken, zonder ons vast te zetten in te krappe ruimtes, met te grote of steeds veranderende groepen, met ondermaats materiaal, slechte afspraken of een te grote druk naar een eindproduct toe? Is er steeds voldoende respect voor de deelnemers en hun eigen noden en behoeften? Zijn de begeleiders zich voldoende bewust van hun eigen privileges en achtergronden, en werken zij niet onbewust en onbedoeld mee aan een verdere uitsluiting en stigmatisering van de doelgroep waar ze mee werken? Zijn sociaal-circusprojecten kritisch genoeg om zich niet voor de kar te laten spannen van bepaalde beleidsmakers en zich te laten gebruiken als windowdressing van bepaalde wantoestanden?
Een voorbeeld: vluchtelingen hebben niet enkel een leuk circusprojectje nodig, maar ook huisvesting, inkomen, integratiekansen, waardigheid, etc. Zorgen we er ook voor dat onze circuspedagogie niet wordt uitgehold? Het uitzetten van wat circusmateriaal in een rumoerige refter met vijftig kinderen en één begeleider is géén sociaal circus, hoogstens wat veredelde kinderopvang. Durven we het aan om naar het beleid toe niet enkel succesverhalen van sociaal circus op te dissen, maar ook de uitdagingen en mislukkingen te beschrijven, en duidelijk te maken dat een circusproject met een beperkt aantal deelnemers veel tijd en middelen nodig heeft om te kunnen slagen? En last but not least: hoe open zijn de geesten binnen onze circusateliers al om het feest van de diversiteit niet enkel te laten spelen in onze sociaal-circusprojecten, maar ook in onze dagelijkse werking? Zijn we klaar om onze reguliere lessen, onze vrijwilligerswerking en ons lesgeversteam representatiever te maken?
Sociaal circus is een blijvertje en kan, mits een goede omkadering, openheid om te leren, en voldoende middelen, uitgroeien tot een volwaardige en alom gerespecteerde discipline naast vele anderen. Waar ook de marges van de samenleving elkaar vinden en hun eigenzinnige eigenheid vieren, wars van starre maatschappelijke conventies en steriel fatsoen. Waar spel, creativiteit en verwondering ons leiden. Want dát is circus, toch? Au boulot!
