In 2018 is het tien jaar geleden dat het Circusdecreet onder de doopvont werd gehouden met als doel de circuskunsten in Vlaanderen te ondersteunen. Ter ere van dit jubileum presenteren Circuscentrum en jeugdtheater Kopergietery ‘Cirque déjà vu?’: een project dat terugblikt op wat was maar met het oog op de toekomst en de next generation. Vijf iconische circusvoorstellingen van de voorbije jaren worden door vijf regisseurs herwerkt tot vijf korte scènes met kinderen en jongeren. Het resultaat wordt een unieke voorstelling enkel en alleen te zien tijdens Smells Like Circus in januari. CircusMagazine voelde alvast de artiesten van de originele voorstellingen aan de tand en licht een tipje van de sluier van wat de nieuwe makers ervan (willen) bakken. Déjà vu? Du jamais vu!

Wat inspireerde jullie tot deze voorstelling?
Bram Dobbelaere: “Tijdens een residentie in Parijs moesten we elke dag s’ochtends de RER (soort metro) nemen naar onze werkplek. Al die mensen, tegen wil en dank veroordeeld tot elkaar, die opeengepakt zitten in een te kleine ruimte: dat is vreselijk maar tegelijk ongelooflijk boeiend. Ik denk nog altijd dat daar de basis voor ‘m²’ is gelegd: met een scènevloer die steeds kleiner wordt en waarin de artiesten samen vast komen te zitten. Hoe reageer je dan op elkaar?”
Waarom denk je dat jullie voorstelling als een ijkpunt binnen het circus in Vlaanderen wordt gezien?
“Het was voor ons de eerste keer dat we ‘deftig’ werkten in de zin van echt professioneel: met voldoende residentietijd, doordachte coaching. We zijn bewust op zoek gegaan naar coaches buiten het circusveld. Voor Joke Laureyns en Kwint Manshoven (het choreografenduo achter Kabinet k) is het werken met bewegende lichamen in een ruimte een tweede natuur. Hun expertise is van onschatbare waarde gebleken. Waarin onze voorstelling ook opviel was de pure eenvoud met slechts één ‘simpel’ leesbaar basisconcept en één circustechniek, het jongleren.”
Is er een speciaal voorval dat je is bijgebleven?
“Het was voor het eerst dat we met deze voorstelling buiten Europa toerden, en dan nog meteen naar de circushoofdstad Montréal. Het was een onvergetelijke ervaring. Het publiek is daar gewend aan grote compagnies waarin alle circuskunsten aan bod komen, en dan stonden er daar ineens vier gastjes uit België op een vierkante meter te jongleren. Maar de reacties waren laaiend.”
Cirque déjà vu viert 10 jaar circusdecreet. Wat zijn jouw aanbevelingen voor de toekomst?
“Het circusdecreet en de bijhorende overheidssteun heeft ons enorm geholpen om te professionaliseren. De stap van wat halfbakken in een park jongleren naar een productie professioneel kunnen aanpakken, is cruciaal in onze ontwikkeling geweest. Inmiddels heeft die professionalisering zich niet alleen in onze maar ook in de volgende generatie doorgezet, maar helaas zijn de middelen niet evenredig meegegroeid. De circusartiest blijft iemand die ook zelf de camionette bestuurt, het decor opbouwt, technisch alles klaarzet, daarna weer afbreekt en met de camionette naar de volgende speelplek boldert. Ik zie het in andere podiumkunsten niet gebeuren.”
Wat hoop je (of wat hoop je vooral niet) dat de nieuwe regisseurs met de voorstelling zullen aanvangen?
“Ik hoop dat ze weinig kopiëren maar in alle vrijheid met het basisidee aan de slag gaan. Wat gebeurt er met mensen die samenhokken op een veel te kleine oppervlakte?”
Doen de make-over: Timo Sterckx en Salomé Mooij (twee jonge regisseurs uit de dramaopleidingen van KASK en RITCS)
Timo Sterckx: “We bouwen niet de scène af naar één vierkante meter zoals in het origineel maar beginnen meteen op de vierkante meter. Dat er niet vier performers, maar liefst zeven jongeren die vierkante meter bewonen, maakt het extra spannend. Benieuwd of we ze in toom kunnen houden!”
Welk idee lag aan de basis voor deze voorstelling?
Kurt Demey: “Vreemd genoeg was er eerst het kostuum. In een winkeltje in Antwerpen zag ik een paar hoorns liggen en meteen kreeg ik het beeld voor me van een man met hoorns op zijn rug. Een surreëel en poëtisch beeld, mooi en tegelijk wreed, mens en tegelijk dier. Als een soort onwerelds mythisch wezen. Het was de eerste voorstelling waarin ik mentalisme trucs integreerde en dat leek op een wonderlijke manier te kloppen met het gevoel van iets bovenmenselijks.”
Waarom denk je dat je voorstelling als een ijkpunt binnen het circus in Vlaanderen wordt gezien?
“Mentalisme was toen nog een vrij onbekend gegeven. Namen als Jan Bardi lagen alweer ver in het verleden, binnen de comedy was Gili er net mee begonnen. Maar het inzetten van mentalisme trucs, meer dan in een pure show, binnen een theatraal gegeven was nieuw. Het zorgde voor verwondering en verwarring.”
Is er een speciaal voorval dat je is bijgebleven?
“De voorstelling heeft heftige reacties losgeweekt: sommige toeschouwers werden echt kwaad om hoe ik hen ‘bewerkte’ tegen terwijl anderen lyrisch werden en in mij hun spirituele broeder zagen. Wanneer ik dan zei dat mentalisme eigenlijk alleen maar trucs zijn, fluisterde zo’n ‘spirituele broeder’ me in het oor: “Ik begrijp dat je moet zwijgen, de staat verbiedt u anders te zeggen”. Ik heb zelf ook moeten zoeken hoe met deze extreme reacties om te gaan: zeggen dat het louter een trucje is daarmee degradeer je jezelf tot een louter charlatan, terwijl ik wil dat mensen voorbij dat trucje kijken en een bijzondere voorstelling zien.”
Cirque déjà vu viert 10 jaar circusdecreet. Wat zijn jouw aanbevelingen voor de toekomst?
“Zonder het circusdecreet en de ondersteuning die van daaruit is gekomen hadden we nooit gestaan waar we nu staan in de ontwikkeling van het circus in Vlaanderen. De voorstellingen zijn kwaliteitsvoller, we toeren nationaal en internationaal. Maar achter de schermen heerst een gigantisch amateurisme. De subsidies laten ons toe te creëren en te toeren maar in uiterst penibele omstandigheden waarin we nauwelijks in staat zijn om mensen in dienst te nemen. Het gevolg is dat we alles zelf doen waardoor op veel vlakken maar half werk wordt geleverd bijvoorbeeld in het schrijven van dossiers of pers- en netwerking. Om nog maar te zwijgen van je privéleven dat eronder lijdt. In tegenstelling tot in de podiumkunsten zijn er ook geen ondersteunende productiehuizen die deze last wegnemen. Daarnaast, mogen ook circusartiesten al eens op tafel kloppen over het artiestenstatuut dat nauwelijks een statuut te noemen is maar een ware heksenjacht geworden is.”
Wat hoop je (of wat hoop je vooral niet) dat de nieuwe regisseurs met de voorstelling zullen aanvangen?
“Ik ben benieuwd wat ze gaan doen met de technieken die ik hen aanleerde. Want uiteindelijk is de techniek maar een trucje. Het is wat je ermee vertelt en hoe je dat doet dat belangrijk is.”
Doet de make-over: Tijs Verbrugge (afgestudeerd aan de toneelopleiding in Maastricht en heeft een vaag circusverleden)
Tijs Verbrugge: “Ik heb ervoor gekozen om de voorstelling te maken met twee zussen op scène. Omdat twee zussen sowieso al een band hebben waar je al publiek niet tussen komt, in zekere zin heeft die verbondenheid iets magisch. In de jaren 1800 waren er kennelijk ook twee zussen die een eigen taal van communiceren hadden ontwikkeld en daarmee mentalisme shows deden. Ik wil graag met dat gegeven iets doen. We hebben ter voorbereiding al samengewerkt met Kurt Demey die ons enkele mentalisme technieken heeft aangeleerd. Het was erg cool was om op die manier bevoorrechte getuige te zijn van de ‘achterkant’ van een voorstelling.”
Welk idee lag aan de basis voor deze voorstelling?
Danny Ronaldo: “Het was tijdens een tournee in Italië dat ik een ‘pizzaiolo’ (pizzamaker) het deeg zag opgooien en bedacht dat het zonde was dat daar nog nooit circus mee gemaakt was. Er zijn immers verwante elementen: niet enkel de techniek, maar ook door de traditie waarmee het gepaard gaat en hoe het ambacht wordt doorgegeven van generatie op generatie, van meester op leerling. Ik vond het ook interessant om eens te jongleren met levend materiaal, de deeg die als object door manipulatie andere vormen en proporties aanneemt. Een andere belangrijke inspiratiebron was de commedia dell’arte, een traditie die bij onze familie in het bloed zit. De meester-knecht verhouding zo typisch voor de commedia dell’arte konden mijn broer (David Ronaldo) en ik hier eens heel zwart-wit neerzetten. Daarnaast is er het vaudeville theater waarin de restaurantscène een standaard gegeven is en waarmee artiesten als de Perezoffs naam en faam hebben gemaakt.”
Waarom denk je dat je voorstelling als een ijkpunt binnen het circus in Vlaanderen wordt gezien?
“In die tijd was het voor Vlaamse circussen vrij uitzonderlijk om de combinatie van circus en theater te maken, iets wat in het buitenland met de nouveau cirque wel al het geval was. Waar in traditionele circussen vooral gespeeld wordt in een tent met een bonte schare artiesten in losse nummertjes vond ik het net een uitdaging om rond één scène, het restaurant, een ganse voorstelling te bouwen en dat met eigenlijk slechts twee artiesten op scène. Voor een deel van het publiek wat dat een serieuze drempel. Misschien zelfs meer dan nu ik solo in de piste sta in ‘Fidelis Fortibus’.”
Is er een speciaal voorval dat je is bijgebleven?
“We hebben de voorstellingen talloze keren opgevoerd, in allerlei landen en in de meest uiteenlopende contexten. Het speciale is dat hoe de humor en de tradities ook verschillen, één iets blijkt voor iedereen herkenbaar en dat is de verhouding knecht en meester.”
Cirque déja vu viert 10 jaar circusdecreet. Wat zijn jouw aanbevelingen voor de toekomst?
“Het circusdecreet is een beetje een lege doos, vol goede bedoelingen maar waar nooit de grote middelen zijn ingezet die nodig zijn. Als het decreet iets gecreëerd heeft dan is het dat een discussie op gang gebracht heeft over wat is circus, wat is hedendaags, waarin ligt de traditie maar ook – in nefastere zin – welk circus heeft of verdient wel of niet een toekomst? Het decreet heeft in die hoedanigheid vooral verdeeldheid gezaaid omdat er nu eenmaal te weinig geld is om die diversiteit te kunnen ondersteunen. Ik heb het gevoel dat er binnen de andere kunsten, zoals dans en theater, een grotere openheid is over wat dans of theater allemaal kan en mag zijn en dat dit misschien ook te danken is aan een bredere subsidiëring. Nu maken we ruzie om een te kleine koek en zo kweek je een kruideniersmentaliteit waarbij iedereen zijn eigen zaak probeert te verdedigen.”
Wat hoop je (of wat hoop je vooral niet) dat de nieuwe regisseurs met de voorstelling zullen aanvangen?
“Toen me werd gevraagd of ik mijn akkoord wou geven voor dit project heb ik volmondig ja gezegd. Dan ga ik mij ook niet gedragen als de erfgenamen van Beckett (die bepalen dat het werk van toneelschrijver Samuel Beckett precies in woord en regie moet worden opgevoerd zoals Beckett het ooit neerschreef). Als de bezieling er is, komt ook de rest.”
Doet de make-over: Louis Janssens (jonge regisseur en acteur uit de dramaopleiding van het KASK en medestichter van Cie DeSnor)
Louis Janssens: “Dit is voor mij een heel bijzondere uitdaging aangezien dat ik door als kind ‘Cucina dell’arte’ te zien, voor mezelf beslist heb dat ik het theater in wou. Ik heb die voorstelling dan ook veelvuldig thuis nagespeeld. De liefde voor clownerie en commedia dell’arte is iets wat op een aparte manier ook terugkomt in theater dat ik nu maak met Ferre Marnef bij Cie DeSnor. Welke twist ik aan mijn versie zal geven? Het pseudo-Italiaanse gebrabbel en de meester-knecht verhouding is iets waar ik zeker mee aan de slag ga. Ik werk met vier personen op scène, twee kinderen en twee jongeren, waardoor je de machtsverhouding nog extra kan accentueren én onderuit halen.”
Welk idee lag aan de basis voor deze voorstelling?
Alexander Vantournhout: “Het idee kwam tijdens een residentie in Noorwegen toen ik in een badkamer vol spiegels mijn proporties begon te analyseren. Ik heb mijn lichaam toen opgemeten en vergeleken met de gemiddelde statistieken en daaruit bleek mijn nek en torso te lang, mijn ledematen te kort. Niet alleen was er sprake van disproporties, het ging ook over disfunctionaliteit: door de vele jaren circustraining met roue cyr (enkel rad) had ik een brede voorarmspier ontwikkeld die zelfs breder was dan mijn biceps. Ik vond me een beetje de freak van het circus en wou nagaan hoe ik via ‘protheses’ –wat dan een Rubenskraag of hoge schoenen is geworden – die disproporties kon ‘bijstellen’.”
Waarom denk je dat je voorstelling als een ijkpunt binnen het circus in Vlaanderen wordt gezien?
“Het is een van de eerste circusvoorstellingen in Vlaanderen die echt gericht was op een louter volwassen publiek, ook omwille van het feit dat ik het grootste deel van de voorstelling naakt perform. Het is ook vrij statisch circus op een kleine oppervlakte, met weinig objecten, erg minimaal. Bijna Scandinavisch design als het ware, zoals die badkamer in Noorwegen.”
Is er een speciaal voorval dat je is bijgebleven?
“Wat vaak terugkeerde in de reacties van mensen is hoe ze hun eigen lichaam terug graag zijn gaan zien door de voorstelling. Hoe ze hun eigen lijf terug omarmen met alle onvolmaaktheden. Dat vind ik toch wel heel bijzonder. Ook het feit dat ik soms met de voorstelling ook na ‘het einde’ in opperste concentratie bleef doorgaan op scène, soms nog een uur lang, zorgde voor een ongekende samenhorigheid.”
Cirque déjà vu viert 10 jaar circusdecreet. Maar wat zijn jouw aanbevelingen voor de toekomst?
“Er moet dringend werkt gemaakt worden van structurele subsidies. Zolang we enkel projectmatig kunnen werken kan je enkel personeel voor korte tijd engageren en missen we de middelen om op een gezonde manier – financieel en mentaal – te kunnen toeren. Ook wordt alle circus nu nog te vaak over een en dezelfde kam beoordeeld en betoelaagd terwijl er een groot verschil is tussen toeren in het commercieel en artistiek circuit.”
Wat hoop je (of wat hoop je vooral niet) dat de nieuwe regisseurs met de voorstelling zullen aanvangen?
“Ik hoop dat ze vooral niet exact dezelfde prothesen gaan gebruiken, maar starten vanuit de beginvraag en dus kijken naar het specifieke lichaam en de proporties van wie het nu gaat uitvoeren. Misschien is het wel een kind met een te korte nek of net te lange benen, wat weer om heel andere protheses vraagt dan ik hanteerde.”
Doet de make-over: Hanna Mampuys (circusartieste bij There There Company en lesgeefster bij Cirkus in Beweging)
Hanna Mampuys: “De fragiliteit die ook uit het origineel sprak, pas ik toe op een kind waarbij ik de protheses zie als het idee van het ongeschondene en onbevangene dat we ten alle koste willen beschermen.”
Welk idee lag aan de basis voor deze voorstelling?
Frederique Snoeks: “De voorstelling bouwt voort op het circusnummer waarmee we zijn afgestudeerd aan ACaPA in Tilburg. Dat was een nummer waarin we elkaar uitdaagden en het reële gevaar opzochten maar met de nodige humor.”
Waarom denk je dat jullie voorstelling als een ijkpunt binnen het circus in Vlaanderen wordt gezien?
“Het is circus met een hoog performancegehalte waarbij we als onszelf op de scène staan en niet als personage of pure uitvoerder van kunstjes. Dat blijkt ook uit de titel die aangeeft hoe lang we als koppel exact samen waren bij de première van de voorstelling. Bijzonder is ook dat we gebruik maken van objecten die niet circusgerelateerd zijn, zoals muizenvallen of een dartsbord met pijlen. In het buitenland wordt onze voorstelling ook vaak als typisch Vlaams omschreven omwille van de zwarte humor.”
Is er een speciaal voorval dat jullie is bijgebleven?
“Persoonlijk zal ons vooral die laatste repetitie bijblijven toen Bert geraakt werd door een hamer en naar het ziekenhuis moest afgevoerd worden om genaaid te worden waardoor we de try-out hebben moeten uitstellen. Maar ook de vele vaak ontroerende reacties van het publiek zullen ons bijblijven. De schoonste en tegelijk ook bitterzoetste herinnering is die van een vrouw die samen met haar man onze voorstelling had gezien. Enkele maanden later is haar man op de palliatieve gestorven. In die laatste momenten waarbij hij met een soort kraan omhoog getakeld moest worden in bed, grapte hij tegen zijn vrouw: OK? OK! Zoals wij ook zeggen tegen elkaar wanneer we in de voorstelling een gevaarlijke situatie ingaan.”
Cirque déja vu viert 10 jaar circusdecreet. Maar wat zijn jouw aanbevelingen voor de toekomst?
“Er is dringend nood aan structurele subsidies, nu moeten we als circusartiesten echt alles zelf doen, en dat heeft misschien zijn charmes maar soms is het echt teveel. Het zou fijn zijn om bepaalde taken toch te kunnen doorgeven aan een extra medewerker.”
Wat hoop je (of wat hoop je vooral niet) dat de nieuwe regisseurs met de voorstelling zullen aanvangen?
“Dat ze maar doen. Verras ons, zou ik zeggen!”
Doet de make-over: Griet Dobbelaere (actrice en artistiek coördinator theaterateliers Kopergietery)
Griet Dobbelaere: “De voorstelling draait om dominantie. In mijn versie zet ik één jongen en vier meisjes op scène, kwestie van de verhouding wie wie domineert nog wat explicieter te maken. In hun voorstelling zetten Bert & Fred enkele ongelooflijke stunts neer waaruit ontzettend veel techniciteit spreekt. Dat is iets wat deze jongeren onmogelijk al onder de knie kunnen hebben. Het uitdagende is dus om die kunde, dat ambacht te vertalen naar ‘iets anders’, waarin je het origineel toch herkent. Dat klinkt misschien vaag, maar meer verklappen zou zonde zijn.”
