In Amerika en Duitsland is het al langer een traditie: de close-up theaters waarbij je met je neus op de performers kan genieten van goocheltrucs en magische acts in een volledig ingerichte setting. Binnenkort heeft ook Gent zijn eigen goocheltheater: House of Mysteries. Circusmagazine nam al eens een kijkje achter de schermen.
Initiatiefnemers Luc Poppe, Nikolaas Martens en Janis Van Heesbeke zijn al jaren begeesterd door al wat magie ademt. Luc heeft een ganse carrière achter de rug als magisch consultant bij theater en tv-shows gaande van ‘De Droomfabriek’ van Bart Peeters tot shows voor de koning van Koeweit of onlangs nog de musical ‘Cinderella’ in China. Hij leerde als twaalfjarige de knepen van het vak bij een geëmigreerde Tsjechische professor. Nikolaas, in het dagelijkse leven ingenieur-architect, startte met goochelen toen hij als zevenjarige een goochelaar aan het werk zag in één van de grote staatscircussen die toen nog op het Sint-Pietersplein hun tenten mochten opslaan. Werd daar een doek in een stok omgetoverd dan heeft Nikolaas zich met Rob De Schutter inmiddels verdiept in de Victoriaanse séance, waarin met een beperkt publiek contact wordt gelegd met de gene zijde. En dan is er nog de benjamin van het gezelschap, Janis, die de smaak te pakken kreeg toen een goochelaar in een café op de Vrijdagsmarkt een munt wegtoverde. Intussen is hij zelf een begiftigd kaartgoochelaar die ook de uitstappen naar theater en muziek niet schuwt.
Nu maken ze een gezamenlijke droom waar. Pal in het centrum van Gent vlakbij het Gravensteen, alwaar ze van een oud koetshuis en voormalig veilinghuis een magische plek willen scheppen. De verbouwingen zijn volop bezig, tijdens de Gentse Feesten verwelkomen ze een eerste show, Circus Mefisto, om begin oktober officieel het House of Mysteries te openen waar de goochelkunst in al haar vormen, gaande van close-up magie met kaarten en munten tot illusionisme en mentalisme, aan de lijve te ondervinden valt.
Je raakt er enkel binnen op afspraak, via een klein steegje, waarachter zich een wondere wereld ontplooit: met een bibliotheek, een ‘Wunderkammer’ of klein museum vol bijzondere artefacten, een close-up theatertje voor intieme acts, een chambre noire voor de séances en als klap op de vuurpijl – want verborgen achter een geheime deur – een heuse spiegeltent. Sounds like magic?!
Luc Poppe: “Het goochelcircuit is in Vlaanderen nog steeds vooral op evenementen gericht, wat ergens spijtig is. Het blijft schering en inslag: de goochelaar die wordt geboekt voor een bedrijfsevent of kinderfeestje en dan moet infiltreren in het feestgedruis – of het gebrek eraan – en dit vaak tegen wil en dank van beide partijen. Voor de goochelaar is het soms je reinste vernedering. Een plek als deze moet daarin verandering brengen.”
Nikolaas Martens: “Hier scheppen we de randvoorwaarden zelf. In andere landen zoals Duitsland bestaat de traditie van close-up theaters al veel langer. Er wordt een ganse setting en verhaal gecreëerd en het publiek beslist zelf om ernaar toe te komen en deelachtig aan te zijn. Het is een opwaardering van de goochelkunst in plaats van kunstjes doen op commando. In plaats van de goochelaar die trucje na trucje brengt – een beetje zoals het oude circus ook een opeenvolging van acts is – willen we graag een totaalbeleving bieden.”
Janis Van Heesbeke: “Noem het immersief theater maar dan zonder VR-bril of special effects, het is net het ambachtelijke handwerk en psychologische denkwerk waarmee we verwondering brengen.”
Luc: “We tonen de ‘unplugged’ versie van de magie: geen toeters en bellen zoals bij de grote illusionisten à la David Copperfield en andere Las Vegas-sterren maar uitgaand van authenticiteit en métier.”
Kan je een hedendaags publiek dat surft op de magie van de nieuwste technologieën eigenlijk nog verwonderen met zoiets als ambachtelijk goochelen?
Janis: “Je zou denken dat de mens met meer kennis nuchterder in het leven staat. Mensen zien een goochelfilmpje op YouTube en zeggen: “Pfff, dat is trucage.” Tot ze het in het echt, live meemaken. We doen beroep op het dubbele bewustzijn, je weet dat het niet echt is, maar toch schrik je en vraag je je af: hoe kan dat nu? Het is wat ze in literatuur omschrijven als suspension of disbelief, de bereidheid van een lezer of toeschouwer om zijn scepticisme over wat mogelijk is tijdelijk opzij te zetten in functie van de beleving.”
Nikolaas: “Als we de séances opvoeren waarin we contact opnemen met de doden, en we samen rond een kaars aan een tafel zitten of spelen met het ouijabord (letterbord gebruikt tijdens séances, red.), dan wordt de uitkomst daarvan geleid door de fantasie van de mensen zelf. Op dat moment deel je een intieme belevenis en dat op zich is tegenwoordig al een unicum. En (knipoog) het is een dunne grens tussen weten en geloven.”
Luc: “Wat brengt goochelen de mensen in essentie bij? Het leert ons de relativiteit van het begrip waarheid. Iets wat in deze tijden misschien meer dan ooit een kennis van onschatbare waarde is.”
Het pronkstuk van The House of Mysteries is toch wel de Spiegeltent.
Luc: “De spiegeltent stond vroeger in het kusttheater ’t Colisée in Blankenberge (nu Het Witte Paard, red.) en zijn we volledig aan het restaureren: van het herschilderen van de in hout gesculpteerde beelden tot het terug vastplakken van verloren spiegeltjes.”
Nikolaas: “Ook in het museum staan enkele pronkstukken zoals een replica van l’oranger fantastique van Jean-Robert Houdin: een magische automaat waarbij een appelsienboom plots in bloei komt en een geleende ring uit het fruit tevoorschijn komt.”
Janis: “Maar de topstukken zijn uiteindelijk toch de performers zelf. Naast ons als vaste waarden willen we ook samenwerken met talenten van eigen bodem.”
Luc: “Alles wordt momenteel gefinancierd met eigen kapitaal. Al hopen we om bijkomende subsidiëring te vinden en steun van Toerisme. Want dat blijkt nog een gat in de markt in Gent: voor de vele toeristen is er weinig niet-Nederlandstalig theatraal entertainment in de stad. Voorlopig richten we ons qua doelpubliek vooral op volwassenen die dit in groep willen beleven, maar op termijn plannen we ook matinees en workshops voor kinderen. Tijdens de Gentse Feesten zullen we er voor het eerst de Spiegeltent bespelen met Circus Mefisto, een versmelting van de magische trucs van Janis, met de Balkanmuziek van Djurdjevak en het figurentheater Mireille & Matthieu (Mareille Labohm en Eric Bassier, red.). Regisseur Walter Janssen (bekend van Manmanman en regisseur van Kommil Foo, red.) levert het verhaal over een duivelse bende die uit de hel wordt verstoten omdat ze niet duivels genoeg zijn. En Herwig Deweerdt zal er een kindervoorstelling, De Pluizentuin, brengen.”
Enkelen van jullie zijn lid van een goochelclub, De Magische Cirkel in Sint-Amandsberg, waar expertise wordt uitgewisseld en trucs worden bijgeschaafd in besloten kring. Jullie willen ook dat verderzetten op de nieuwe locatie met een Mystery Lab?
Nikolaas: “Het Mystery Lab moet een experimentele broedplaats worden waar zowel professionele als gepassioneerde amateurgoochelaars kunnen samenkomen om expertise uit te wisselen. Maar we willen ook de link met andere disciplines uit circus, theater, dans en muziek opzoeken. Op die manier willen we de kennis van het ambacht verdiepen én verbreden. Met het Huis van Alijn smeden we plannen rond een samenwerking voor een nieuwe tentoonstelling ‘Sous le chapiteau’. Historie van de Magie, een lezingreeks rond de geschiedenis van het goochelen, zal tevens plaatsvinden in het House of Mysteries. We willen aan het lab ook een leerstoel koppelen en vanuit de literatuur de link naar de praktijk leggen. Er bestaan ontelbare boeken over goochelkunst en goochelarij, van heel oud tot heel recent. Een gespecialiseerde uitgeverij als The Miracle Factory heeft bijvoorbeeld een fantastische kanjer van een boek rond het leven en werk van Jean-Robert Houdin uitgebracht. Een jaar rond dat oeuvre werken zou geweldig zijn. De leerstoel geeft de kans de literatuur in groep te bestuderen, te analyseren met als doel een voorstelling te geven aan een publiek. Want dat blijft uiteindelijk de essentie van de goochelkunst: het publiek begoochelen.”
Janis: “Door de geschiedenis te leren, maak je ruimte voor de toekomst van het goochelen. Het is door de stof te kennen dat je er vervolgens het stof kan vanaf blazen. Zo heb ik een truc waarbij ik champignons tover, die erop alludeert dat het publiek hallucineert. Het is een truc die in feite terug gaat – en waarover ook wordt bericht in oude boeken – op de goochelaars die in het Oude Egypte de farao entertainden door eieren uit zijn mond te toveren.”
Luc: “Nieuwe technologieën en materialen brengen weer nieuwe mogelijkheden met zich mee. Zo is er de gekende oude ‘Pepper’s ghost illusie’ waarbij een geest verschijnt op het podium door reflectie van een verborgen personage op een grote glasplaat. Tegenwoordig kan men door opgespannen projectiefolie en het gebruik van video een nieuwe dimensie aan die illusie geven zoals bijvoorbeeld Rafael Navarro met zijn Cie 14:20 doet.”
Is de goochelkunst aan een heropleving bezig?
Luc: “Hier in Vlaanderen hebben mentalisten zoals Gili en Kurt Demey de afgelopen jaren de weg naar de schouwburgzalen gevonden en in Frankrijk is er de ganse stroming van de Magie nouvelle, die illusionisme tot een theatrale beleving brengt. Maar ook en vooral het belang van het internet – zeker naar jong talent toe – valt niet te onderschatten. Waar je vroeger als jongere je eerste trucs leerde uit de goocheldoos die je voor kerst kreeg, staat YouTube tegenwoordig vol met filmpjes. Al moet je wel écht gepassioneerd zijn om de stap naar meer te zetten, want anders blijft het oppervlakkig. Tien jaar geleden dacht iedereen bij circus nog aan de clown met de rode neus en de leeuw door de brandende hoepel, inmiddels is dat beeld bijgesteld. En ik denk dat we ook met het goochelen aan het begin van een nieuwe lente staan. House of Mysteries hoopt daaraan een bescheiden bijdrage te kunnen leveren.”

Goocheltheaters zijn ons land niet vreemd. Reeds in de 19de eeuw verschijnen dergelijke theaters op regelmatige basis op de kermis waar ze van 1870 tot en met 1890 een enorme populariteit kennen. Sierend tussen de vele attracties brengen deze barakken een gehele voorstelling waarin het publiek de mooiste mirakels krijgt voorgeschoteld.
De meest gekende theaters zijn die van de Gentse Philippe Lemeur en van de families Grandsart en Courtois, hetgeen uiteindelijk zal resulteren in het Théâtre Grandsart-Courtois dat in hun ‘Schitterend Toover-Paleis’ plaats biedt aan 800 toeschouwers.
De opkomende populariteit van de goochelkunst is in die periode mee te danken aan Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin (1805-1871). Gekend als de vader van de moderne goochelkunst, haalt Houdin de magie weg uit het straatbeeld om zijn mirakels voor de beau monde te presenteren in zijn eigen Théâtre Robert-Houdin in Parijs. Dit goocheltheater kent dankzij de voorstellingen van deze grootmeester zo’n populariteit dat het later wordt overgenomen en succesvol uitgebaat door filmpionier George Méliès.
Maar het meest tot de verbeelding sprekende goocheltheater uit de geschiedenis is ongetwijfeld The Egyptian Hall in Londen. Oorspronkelijk gebouwd in 1812 als tentoonstellingsruimte, wordt dit Egyptisch ogende gebouw tegen het einde van de 19de eeuw de thuishaven voor al wat met magie te maken heeft. De Engelse goochelaar John Nevil Maskelyne slaagt erin om het theater 31 jaar uit te baten waardoor het de titel krijgt: England’s home of Mystery. Het fungeert als het epicentrum van de goochelkunst en is dé plek waar de laatste nieuwe creaties vertoond worden. Het is in deze periode dat deze discipline een sterke artistieke groei kent.
In Duitsland zijn tot op de dag van vandaag nog steeds verschillende goocheltheaters terug te vinden, waar naast voorstellingen ook lezingen en vergaderingen in plaats vinden. Voortaan heeft ook Gent, net als tijdens de gloriejaren op de kermis, terug een plek waar het publiek betoverd en veroverd kan worden.
