Kledij vertelt ons alles over de medemens. Dagelijks kleden – of verkleden – we ons in functie van de rol die we gaan spelen in de samenleving. Of in een voorstelling. Maar wat als er geen kleren zijn om naar te kijken, om betekenis uit te halen? In de dans- en theaterwereld zijn blote lijven al jaren schering en inslag. In het circus, toch een uiterst lichamelijke kunstvorm, kom je ze maar zelden tegen. Jammer? Twee circassiens antwoorden met de nodige nuances.
Gérard Fasoli (59) is directeur van de Brusselse circushogeschool ESAC. In een vorig leven was hij circusartiest en zat hij er niet mee in om naakt op het podium te staan, zolang het maar betekenisvol was in de context van de voorstelling. Een genuanceerde pro met andere woorden.
“Veel mensen ervaren naakt op de bühne als uitgesproken intiem en zelfs seksueel; vaak kost het ons moeite om die seksuele connotatie los te laten. In onze uitgesproken textiele samenleving wordt naakt meestal verdrongen, verstopt of juist overdreven geëtaleerd.
Het lichaam van een circusartiest is buiten standaard en de blootstelling ervan kan soms onfatsoenlijk overkomen. Het is een moeilijke opdracht om dat naakte lichaam op een natuurlijke, alledaagse wijze op de scène op te voeren. De keuze voor naakt is een hoogst persoonlijke benaderingswijze en ik denk niet dat het de taak is van een school om die keuze te beïnvloeden of aan te moedigen. Tijdens de interpretatielessen op ESAC (dans, theater) trachten onze docenten nochtans de studenten bewust te maken van de positie van hun lichaam ten opzichte van de ruimte, de toestellen, de medespelers en het publiek.
Een goed en juist gevoel op de bühne bekomt men dankzij vaardigheden die het lichaam soms tentoonstellen. Die juiste lichaamshouding is op zich al zeer moeilijk te bereiken voor een circusartiest en naaktheid is zeker geen doel op zich.
Voor mij is het probleem niet te weten of er genoeg, dan wel geen naakt zit in een voorstelling. Indien naaktheid zin heeft in de context van de voorstelling en ze aanvaard wordt, heb ik er geen bezwaar tegen.
Naaktheid heeft voor mij enkel zin indien ik ze kan beschouwen als een kostuum ten dienste van een betekenis. Als voorbeeld hiervan verwijs ik graag naar het spektakel van Yvan Mosjoukine (zie p. ) waarin naaktheid op een sublieme wijze wordt gehanteerd en effectief ten dienste staat van de dramaturgie van de podiumact en van het lichaam.”
Frédérique Snoeks (26) studeerde vorig jaar af aan de Nederlandse circushogeschool ACaPA en vormt samen met Bert Loenders het duo Bert & Fred – in mei wonnen ze nog enkele prijzen op het Young Stage Festival in Basel (Zwitserland). In hun acts draagt Frédérique overduidelijk de broek, zij het enkel figuurlijk. Ze vindt niet dat er meer naakt in het circus moet zijn, al zou ze het eventueel wel overwegen om zelf de stap te zetten. Een genuanceerde contra met andere woorden.
“Toen ik in mijn puberjaren als bijna enige meisje lid was van beginnend Ell Circo d’ell Fuego, vroegen de jongens me regelmatig om mijn borsten te laten zien. Vanaf toen wist ik dat naaktheid in het circus geapprecieerd zou worden, of was deze interesse niet gebaseerd op het artistieke maar was het gewoon een gevolg van hormonale schommelingen?
Ook al ben ik hier toen niet op ingegaan, zoveel jaar later ziet het publiek me als een dominante en SM-achtig type op scène staan. Alhoewel ik mij zo totaal niet voel of ook maar dacht over te komen. Maar na elk optreden krijgt Bert een medelijdend schouderklopje en kijken de mensen mij maar wat vreemd aan.
Oké, ik sla met een zweep een intiem mannelijk deel af, en ja, mijn decolleté is behoorlijk ingesneden, maar echt bewust met naaktheid en erotiek spelen? Nee, van daaruit start ik niet om iets te creëren, wel uit humoristische situaties of krachtige beelden.
Of er meer naakt in circus moet? Nee, niet per se, circus is op zich al prachtig genoeg. En kijk naar de Nederlandse danswereld, daar is naaktheid een soort hype en door die overvloed ben ik al op voorhand verveeld aan het kijken, omdat het meestal totaal niet artistiek in het plaatje past. Zomaar en zonder reden blote borsten en flapperende piemels is niet iets waardoor je meer publiek gaat trekken.
Maar mocht het gepast zijn en een bepaald beeld op scène versterken, dan zou ik het overwegen om uit de kleren te gaan, niet als een pin-up die staat te showen, maar als een artistieke meerwaarde, want zomaar naakt is toch niet aan mij besteed.”
