In Leuven is ‘De Cooman’ een van de bekendste circusachternamen, zeker nu ook vader Jan op zijn oude dag in een circusproductie meespeelt. We spreken elkaar in levende lijve in de binnentuin van One Chicken Farm, de tot creatieplek omgebouwde vierkantshoeve van oudste zoon Gert.

Laat ons beginnen bij de pater familias. Jan, wat is jouw achtergrond?
Jan: “Ik ben de tweede van vijf kinderen. Mijn vader was magistraat in Leuven, mijn moeder huisvrouw. Ik heb in Kortrijk voor opvoeder gestudeerd – een van de weinige richtingen die je niet in Leuven kon studeren – en ben vervolgens in de bijzondere jeugdzorg begonnen. Ik werk nog steeds in die branche. Heel dynamische job, maar erg veeleisend. En natuurlijk heb ik zelf een gezin gesticht, zoals dat dan heet. Mijn vrouw en ik hebben vier kinderen. Gert en Joren zijn de twee oudste. In plaats van naar de scouts of Chiro trokken zij naar de circusschool, hetgeen in Leuven niet eens zo’n uitzondering is.”
Gert: “De meeste van mijn klasgenoten gingen naar de circusschool. Dat was voor mij aanvankelijk ook de hoofdreden om er naartoe te willen: omdat mijn vrienden dat deden.”
Jan: “De grote waarde die wij daar als ouders in zagen, was het aspect van de jeugdbeweging: een omgeving waarin je kinderen omgaan met andere kinderen, sociale vaardigheden leren, hun plan leren trekken, voor elkaar zorgen. Dat kan zowel in de scouts, in een sportclub als in een circusschool. Bij hen is dat de circusschool geworden. En omdat zij daar zo intens mee bezig waren, werd dat voor ons ook een belangrijk deel van ons leven. Onze huidige vriendenkring is vooral gegroeid uit onze betrokkenheid bij Cirkus in Beweging: andere ouders die we hebben leren kennen en wiens kinderen nu ook allemaal uitgezworven zijn.”
Gert en Joren, jullie hebben allebei aan ESAC gestudeerd, de circushogeschool in Brussel.
Gert: “Op mijn zestiende wist ik al: dit wil ik doen. Goeie vrienden als Quintijn Ketels en Jokke Vanderlinden waren er binnengeraakt. Ik wou dat ook en heb er alles aan gedaan om te slagen – meer en gerichter trainen, meer inzetten op acrobatie, lenigheid en kracht.”
Joren: “Bij mij is dat veel later gekomen, pas toen Gert er studeerde. En dan nog was het nooit een bezetenheid. Ik was ook met andere zaken bezig, Kunstbende en zo, performance, waar ik veel energie in stak. Mijn vriendenkring en mijn blik waren breder dan enkel circus. Ik ben dan toch in ESAC beland – al was het ter plekke een hele zoektocht, zowel voor mezelf als voor de school. Bascule was nog niet zo populair als nu, ook collectieven werden niet echt gestimuleerd. We moesten heel veel zelf uitzoeken, tot het bouwen van bascules toe. Een leerrijke periode.”
Jullie genoten dezelfde opleiding, maar jullie professionele carrière verliep totaal verschillend. Gert, jij richtte bijna 15 jaar geleden met drie klasgenoten Carré Curieux op en bleef er tot vandaag voor werken.
Gert: “Al in het tweede jaar ESAC wisten we dat we met ons vieren verder wilden. Niet snel na ons afstuderen heb ik een ongeluk gehad – mijn doek was van de rig losgekomen, met een val van vier meter als gevolg. Dat was niet alleen een wake-upcall op vlak van veiligheid, achteraf gezien was het ook een mijlpaal voor onze compagnie: het verplichtte ons om anders na te denken over ons werk. Niet meer trainen om te trainen, maar meer zoeken naar de artistieke insteek. Carré Curieux is toen écht een compagnie geworden, vanaf dan ging het snel. We waren erg complementair en toerden veel. De eerste jaren is dat je leven, hé, je denkt aan niets anders. Maar dan word je verliefd, krijg je kinderen en verandert je focus; de compagnie komt niet langer op de eerste plaats. Dat was geen evidente periode, ik heb toen echt getwijfeld om uit de compagnie te stappen. Tot de overige groepsleden plots afkwamen met een idee voor een voorstelling mét een tent, mét Titoune als regisseur en waarbij alle gezinsleden gewoon mee op tournee kunnen. Daar kon ik geen nee tegen zeggen. En dan begon een heel ander verhaal.”
Het verhaal van Famille Choisie, een fantastische circusvoorstelling.
Gert: “Een verrijkende periode, maar we hebben echt wel afgezien. De creatie zelf was al geen sinecure, met alle productionele facetten waar we rekening mee moesten houden: tenten, caravans, camions, rijbewijzen, … De eerste tournee in Vlaanderen was zalig, maar de daaropvolgende internationale tournee hakte er echt in. Met dat konvooi door de Alpen rijden, uren aan een stuk, vervolgens alles op veel te korte tijd opbouwen en weer verder trekken. Het was te veel hooi op onze vork. En dan komen de strubbelingen, natuurlijk. Maar op het podium stonden we er wel. Toen Luca (Aeschlimann, red.) meldde dat hij ermee wou stoppen, was dat een hele shock voor de compagnie. Uiteindelijk vonden we een vervanger, Florent Lestage, zodat we nog een jaar konden voortspelen en in schoonheid eindigen, maar toen kwam corona en lag alles stil.”
Joren, jij speelde jarenlang voor allerhande grote internationale gezelschappen om uiteindelijk je eigen solo-onderzoek te voeren.
Joren: “Ik ben inderdaad heel snel in grote compagnieën terechtgekomen: Circus Monti, Cirque du Soleil, Machine de Cirque. Niet te vergelijken met je eigen gezelschap runnen: je moet heel veel spelen – tot wel tien voorstellingen per week – maar verder hoef je je nergens iets van aan te trekken. Basculespringers zijn over het algemeen ook erg technisch en zoeken graag de limieten op. Geleidelijk aan begon ik te beseffen dat wat ik deed niet paste bij wat ik wou. Het collectieve sprak me aan, het samenwerken, maar ik kon me niet vereenzelvigen met die drang om steeds hoger en sneller te gaan. Dus begon ik op mezelf dingen te proberen. Via Circuscentrum kreeg ik een beurs voor artistiek onderzoek, maar ik ontdekte al snel dat ik niet op m’n eentje technisch onderzoek naar de bascule wilde verrichten. Ik miste samenwerking, menselijk contact. Vandaar groeide het idee om op participatieve manier te gaan werken, om het publiek te betrekken bij wat ik doe. Het heeft heel lang geduurd om te voelen waar ik artistiek voor sta; waar wil ik naartoe, wat wil ik vertellen? Om voorbij die salto’s en dat waauw-gevoel te gaan – dat vind ik niet interessant om te brengen. Het blijft een zoektocht, maar ik begin de laatste jaren echt mijn artistieke weg te vinden.”
Ondertussen speel je met je vader in Carrying my father, de langverwachte voorstelling van There There Company die nu al twee premières de mist in zag gaan.
Joren: “In dezelfde periode van m’n artistiek onderzoek naar de bascule was Toon (Van Gramberen, red.) ook met een onderzoek bezig, meer bepaald met zijn vader. Voor circusartiesten zijn vaders ook objecten, hé. (lacht) Maar een vader is een pak interessanter dan mijn object, de plank. Een plank geeft niet veel terug – dat is ook de reden waarom ik niet enkel met planken wil werken. Al vanaf de eerste momenten bij Carrying my father voelde ik: dit is wat ik graag doe, hier ben ik graag. Die eerste fysieke contacten met mijn vader waren trouwens heel straf. Opmerkelijk: na een paar weken voelde het als de normaalste zaak van de wereld.”
Jan: “Voor mij was het vooral ingrijpend om aan de andere kant van het creatieproces te staan: niet langer als toeschouwer, maar als artiest. Als ouder ben je de grootste supporter van je circuskinderen. Wij gingen heinde en verre om ze te zien optreden. Om dan plots zelf deelnemer te zijn van een voorstelling, dat was wel een shock. Ik heb enorm veel ontzag en bewondering voor wat mijn zonen doen. Ik ervaar nu hoe het is bij Carrying my father, maar dat is slechts een kleine fractie van wat zij allemaal presteren.”
Wat willen jullie als artiest aan de mensen meegeven?
Joren: “Het belang van samenwerken en er voor elkaar zijn. In mijn recent werk moet het publiek actief deelnemen om überhaupt iets te kunnen beleven. Er moet samen iets ondernomen worden. Binnen een publiek zie je dan heel interessante dynamieken ontstaan, zoals toeschouwers die het voor mij opnemen en de anderen aansporen om iets te doen zodat mijn experiment kan slagen. Plots krijg je dan die shift: het publiek beseft dat het moet samenwerken om iets te bekomen. ‘Het zal pas lukken als iedereen meedoet. Wij moeten het doen. Samen geraken we verder.’ Da’s een mooi gegeven dat ook in de bredere samenleving meer ingang mag vinden.”
Gert: “Nabijheid, vertrouwen, interactie: voor mij is dat ook altijd essentieel geweest. De schoonheid zien van elkaar, zelfs in lelijke dingen. Maar vooral: het goede zien in de mens. Mensen zijn veel beter dan ze soms lijken. De reële uitwisseling tussen artiest en publiek is voor mij heel belangrijk. Het publiek dat dichtbij zit, dat jou voelt en omgekeerd. Ik heb het dan ook heel moeilijk in deze tijden van social distancing en semi-lockdowns. We krijgen soms de vraag of we ‘iets online kunnen doen’. Maar ik slaag daar niet in. Ik heb te fel die reële nabijheid nodig, dat echte contact. Vertrouwen in elkaar, in het publiek, in de mensen rondom je: veel van onze voorstellingen zijn daarrond gebouwd.”
Waar halen jullie inspiratie uit? Waardoor word je gevoed in het leven?
Jan: “Veel buiten komen. Veel bewegen. Bergen beklimmen. Veel circusspektakels bekijken. En vooral ook de ontmoetingen in die context. In dat opzicht is de creatie van Carrying my father een heel nieuw gegeven, hoeveel energie ik daaruit krijg! Meer globaal, als ik op al die jaren terugkijk: het durven geloven in de keuzes die onze kinderen indertijd gemaakt hebben. Zien wat ze daar allemaal mee doen, geeft ook veel energie.”
Joren: “Ik haal de laatste tijd veel inspiratie uit mijn werk als docent bij Circus Zonder Handen (het Brusselse circusatelier met inclusieve werking, red.). Je wordt er geconfronteerd met moeilijke situaties en veel onrechtvaardigheid, dingen waardoor je beseft dat er serieus iets fout zit in onze maatschappij. Maar werken voor een organisatie die echt een verschil maakt voor die jongeren: ik koester dat. Ik neem die energie ook mee in mijn werk als artiest. Het contrast met de commerciële evenementen waar ik als basculespringer vaak belandde, kan niet groter zijn.”
Gert: “Ik denk dat sociale uitwisseling bij ons allemaal centraal staat – we hebben dat meegekregen van onze ouders, die allebei opvoeder zijn. Bij mij is dat alleen maar versterkt sinds ik zelf papa ben, nu al bijna acht jaar. Ik put sindsdien vooral inspiratie uit de simpele, dagelijkse dingen en de uitwisseling met anderen. En, niet te vergeten: prutsen. Prullen om te prullen. Vertrouwen hebben in een resultaat, ook al weet je dat er soms niets zal uitkomen. Jezelf de vrijheid gunnen om te prutsen.”
Joren: “Ik vind prutsen zelfs een actie van verzet. Ik weiger me te conformeren aan de consumptiemaatschappij. Ik wil dingen herstellen in plaats van ze weg te gooien. Omwegen maken, dingen aanpassen, zelf iets ineensteken en zo tegen het systeem ingaan. Dan kom je vaak in prutsen terecht.”
Gert: “Da’s ook de reden dat ik mij zo amuseer met elektronische muziek: uren aan een stuk op de computer kleine samples verschuiven en prullen tot het perfect is – of niet. (lacht) Of aan knopjes van modulaire synthesizers draaien, heerlijk.”
Jan: “Ik ben ook altijd veel met mijn handen bezig geweest. Spullen herstellen, dingen maken. We hebben dat van mijn vader doorgekregen. Dat was de grote bricoleur van de familie.”
Hoe zien jullie de toekomst tegemoet?
Jan: “Hopelijk mogen we terug de podiums vullen.”
Joren: “Hopelijk mogen we eindelijk in première gaan.”
Gert: “Hopelijk mogen we terug knuffelen.”
Joren: “Op circusvlak zie ik de toekomst wel positief in, nu de werkplaatsen er komen. Dat matcht met hoe ik als artiest functioneer: onderzoeken, experimenteren, evolueren. Op langere termijn wil ik kleinschalig blijven werken, dicht bij de mensen. Met circus of via andere mediums, ik zie dat heel open. De sociaal-artistieke branche spreekt me ook erg aan. Letterlijk iets opbouwen met bepaalde gemeenschappen.”
Gert: “Ik heb voor mezelf de lat altijd erg hoog gelegd. Als ik iets doe, moet ik het ook echt keigoed doen. De laatste jaren was dat moeilijk om vol te houden – ik kon niet langer alles tegelijk goed doen, het was te veel. Ik heb een gans intern proces moeten doormaken om te kunnen selecteren zonder mezelf teleur te stellen. Da’s ook een van de redenen dat ik Carré Curieux verlaat. Ik zou er alleen maar in kunnen blijven aan 100% en dan zou ik mezelf tegen de muur rijden. Momenteel volg ik de opleiding Electronic Music Production, daar zie ik wel een toekomst in – liefst samen met mijn vrouw, die heel goed zingt. We zien wel. Verder wil ik van de One Chicken Farm een dynamische plek maken. Artiesten ontvangen, gevoed worden door hun passies en ideeën, ik heb dat nodig om daarna weer uren op mijn eentje te prullen.”
Jan: “Ik kijk niet al te ver vooruit. Ik richt me liever op de nabije toekomst. Zo kijk ik heel hard uit naar Carrying my father, eindelijk kunnen optreden.”
Joren: “Als het zo doorgaat, is de première pas over 20 jaar.”
Gert: “Carrying my grandfather.”
Jan: “Carrying the kist, ja.”

Jan: “Ik hoop dat ik nog veel producties van mijn kinderen kan meemaken. En dat ik kan blijven helpen bij hun verbouwingen. Containers vullen met bouwafval, dakpannen schrobben. De simpele dingen des levens. Maar ook nog veel in de bergen kunnen trekken. Weet je, op mijn 55ste zijn zowel mijn vrouw als ik halftijds beginnen werken. Da’s de gelukkigste keuze die ik ooit in mijn leven gemaakt heb.”
