Op zijn reizen door Europa bezoekt circusliefhebber Roland Vermeylen steevast zo veel mogelijk circussen, al dan niet met dieren. In mei trok hij naar Zwitserland en ging er kijken naar zes verschillende gezelschappen. Een verslag.
Met Finse mythologische figuren en in een ingenieus bos van op zichzelf roterende stokken, slagen Ulla Tikka, Lukas Staeger en Andreas Muntwyler er weer in om met hun nieuwste creatie ‘Mädchen Mädchen’ een totaal nieuwe gestalte op de theaterscène neer te zetten. Deze productie volgt in hun internationale successenreeks van ‘Harjahti’, ‘PuuPäät’ en ‘InStallation’. Hun gezelschap Roikkuva (Fins voor bewegingen die onaf zijn) brengt nu een creatieve fusion tussen circus, dans en objectmanipulatie. Ze brachten net hun wereldpremière in het Zwitserse Aarau en het publiek was direct mee.
Het Zwitsers publiek staat immers open voor circus in al zijn vormen. Op zeldzame hoogte beweegt zich nog immer het prestigieuze Knie. Dit jaar werden ze voor hun levenswerk gelauwerd met de Xaver-onderscheiding in Live Communication als bijzonder creatief bedrijf dat passioneel én open staat voor bewegingen in de wereld. Ze waren dit jaar ook dé feestplek om 150 jaar Zwitserse dierenbescherming te vieren. Ook Monti met hun ‘Kopfüber’ stond er weer met een nieuwe productie waarvoor de hogergenoemde Andreas Muntwyler mee de regie verzorgde. “Ik hou van dit hoog werkritme van creëren, optreden, verhuizen en ons als groep verder ontwikkelen,” vertelt de enige Vlaamse artiest Danny Vrijsen (Ell Circo d’ell Fuego/ESAC). “Dit is voor mij écht circus en het vraagt karakter én kunnen om hier je draai te vinden, maar de kansen liggen hier dagelijks voor het grijpen.” Dit jaar draaide Monti dan ook weer in het Duitstalige deel rond met een erg gemotiveerde groep.
Een bijzonder hoog groepsniveau is ook hét jaarlijkse kenmerk van Starlight dat vooral in la Suisse Romande reist. Met hun ‘Aparté’ vullen ze dit jaar hun tiende jaar van vernieuwing. De jonge Zwitserse regisseur Stefan Hort nam voor de tweede keer de regie in handen en het is opnieuw een pittige voorstelling met heel veel dans en knappe acrobatie. Harlekin bestaat nu twintig jaar en beleeft een keerpunt. De 70-jarige Pedro Pichler beseft dat het harde circusleven hem te zwaar wordt en ook zijn ietwat jongere partner Monika Aegerter (die nog altijd daarnaast schooldirectrice is) zoekt naar nieuwe uitingsvormen. Maar Harlekin is erg geïntegreerd in de gemeenschap en wordt er ook door gedragen. Zomaar stoppen kan dus niet en er wordt erg veel overlegd en gezocht naar een passende overgangsformule. Maar het kantelen weegt op de dagelijkse show.
Royal brengt in Zwitserland het meest klassiek gestoeld circus. De unieke klasse van performers als de Zwitserse jongleur Eddy Carello, de Franse clown Mathieu en de tijgerfluisteraarster Carmen Zander (voormalig DDR-topatlete) zorgen ervoor dat het publiek ook hier erg meegaat in de opgebouwde sfeer en programmering.
Zwitserland heeft veel gemeen met Vlaanderen. Met ongeveer evenveel inwoners hebben ze echter een circuscultuur waar we alleen jaloers op kunnen zijn. Er groeit continu van alles naast elkaar en dit vaak zonder subsidies. Het circus bestaat er in een grote verscheidenheid, die vaak toch onderling sterk is verweven. De vele producties floreren door de grote betrokkenheid van het publiek. Een verbluffend resultaat van een proces dat jarenlang én duurzaam werd opgebouwd. Het publiek is er ook kritisch. Ze weten immers goed wat uitstekend circus kan zijn. Ze verwachten ook niet dat circus een afkooksel wordt van theater maar dat de eigenheid van circus een sterke motor voor energie, verwondering, ontroering én herkenning blijft. Precies deze continu aanwezige zoektocht naar eigenheid, vernieuwing en blijvende topkwaliteit maakt dat het circus er zijn eigen virtuoze cirkels creëert.
