Parc La Vilette, Parijs. De eindejaarsvoorstelling ‘Pulsions’ van de gerenommeerde circusschool CNAC (Centre National des Arts du Cirque) barst los met een kinky rave party. We spotten Simon Bruyninckx in bloot bovenlijf, Arne Sabbe in een bontjas. Ze huppen wellustig in het rond. Dit is hun moment. Ongetwijfeld.
Geweigerd aan de poorten van ESAC (Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque), golden basculeboys aan ACaPA (Academy for Circus and Performance Art), weggekaapt door CNAC. Nog een paar maanden internationaal toeren met ‘Pulsions’ en dan valt het doek. Dan is het aan hen. “We zijn er klaar voor,” klinkt het de volgende ochtend in een koffiehuis nabij Gare Du Nord. Verschanst achter espresso’s en croissants vertellen ze over ‘voeten op de grond’, behalve als ze op de bascule staan. Ideeën en dromen stuiteren alle kanten op.
“Zeker na deze tournee staan we te popelen om ons eigen ding te doen. De regisseur Laurent Laffargue houdt nogal vast aan zijn stramien en routines. Voor ons basculenummer wou hij enkel puur techniek. Hoog gaan, salto’s maken. Niets artistieks. Echt jammer. We hebben niet de CNAC gedaan om als turners bekeken te worden. Toch zijn we dankbaar voor de ervaring. We werken met een gekende regisseur, een dramaturge, verdienen onze eerste centen, toeren weken met een circustent, fantastische artiesten, ervaren technisch team, tourmanager, enzovoort.”
Ge-de-gou-teerd
Tijdens de voorstelling zagen we inderdaad adembenemende basculetechniek, maar geen Arne. Hij stond in de coulissen met volle concentratie stilletjes mee te bewegen met de figuren, die zijn vervanger Jérôme Hugo en Simon sprongen. “Tja, geblesseerd. Aan mijn voet. Niets ergs, binnen een paar dagen ben ik waarschijnlijk terug op de been,” zegt Arne. Zijn schouders verkruimelen eventjes, een knik in zijn stem. “Pfff… Ik heb het er echt wel moeilijk mee. Het is echt niet het moment. Er komen heel wat programmatoren kijken, mensen van Cirque de Demain, Cirque du Soleil. Ik ben echt ge-de-gou-teerd dat we niet kunnen tonen waar we nu, na jaren trainen, staan.”
Een coach vanuit de school om geblesseerde spelers te begeleiden is er niet. “We vangen dat onder vrienden op. De groep is heel hecht. Twee jaar lang hebben we samen gewoond, getraind, gespeeld, gefeest, geleefd. Vreemd te beseffen dat we binnenkort elk onze eigen weg zullen gaan. Die realiteit sijpelt nu binnen. We zijn een groep, maar binnenkort begint het echte artiestenleven, en dan is het eigenlijk chacun pour sa gueule… ieder voor zich,” aldus Arne.
“Zo erg is het nu ook weer niet,” lacht Simon. “Natuurlijk zijn we blij voor elkaar als er iemand een contract binnen heeft. Maar dan denk je ook van ‘dju, ik wil ook wel zo’n contract.’ Tot december heb ik me redelijk veilig gevoeld. Nu besef ik plots, als de tournee stopt, is er een gat van twee maanden niets. Hoe zal ik dan rondkomen? De school bereidt je er een beetje op voor. De week voor we afstudeerden werden we gebombardeerd met een massa aan informatie rond papierwerk, artiestenstatuut, … Moeilijke, juridische termen, op maat van Frankrijk en eigenlijk te veel op een hoop om te kunnen verwerken. Gelukkig reist er nu een ervaren ‘chargée de diffusion’ (boekingsagente/ tourmanager, red.) met de ‘Pulsions’-tour mee. Zij heeft jarenlang voor verschillende gezelschappen gewerkt. Bij haar kunnen we terecht met vragen over prijsbepaling, contract, enzovoort. En niet te vergeten hebben we een streepje voor met Collectif Malunés. Als ik nu zie hoe klasgenoten knoeiend een eigen gezelschap uit de grond stampen… Het was superzwaar, we hebben er veel geld mee verloren, blessures door gehad, fouten gemaakt. Maar de opstart van een eigen collectief en de creatie van onze eerste buitenvoorstelling ‘Sens Dessus Dessous’ was een ideale leerschool.”
Popcorn
Vooraleer ze met deze voorstelling opnieuw op tournee gaan, beginnen ze alvast aan iets nieuws, een tweeling-basculenummer met popcorneffect. “Samen met Jérôme Hugo en Amaia Valle, een basculeduo dat vorig jaar aan CNAC afstudeerde, willen we op twee bascules onze figuren synchroon springen, veel traversen doen, een soort van popcornsensatie opwekken, om dan weer helemaal synchroon te springen. Na twee weken recherche in april gooien we onszelf al voor de leeuwen en tonen we al ‘iets’ op het Atlas Festival tijdens de Extreme Convention in Antwerpen. Als alles goed loopt, kunnen we met dat nummer misschien naar Young Stage Festival in Basel in mei, en wie weet volgend jaar Cirque de Demain? In ieder geval hopen we het nummer later uit te bouwen tot een volwaardige show die we zowel binnen als buiten kunnen spelen.”
Een tent is een baby
Als je tussen een groep vers afgestudeerde circusartiesten staat en je gooit lukraak een steen in het rond, raak je gegarandeerd iemand die droomt van rondtrekken met een eigen tent. Bij het verhalen van dit mooie ‘Tiny in het circus’-plaatje, beginnen Simon en Arne te gniffelen. “Dat willen we nog steeds. Maar we zijn nu op tournee met de tent van de CNAC school, en dat is echt een eyeopener. En dan hebben we het hier over een spiksplinternieuwe tent, waterdicht, een ervaren technisch team mee op tournee. Een tent is een baby. Je moet er steeds zorg voor dragen, dag en nacht. De verwarming vraagt onderhoud, de touwen moeten steeds bijgesteld worden, er mag niet meer dan 4 cm sneeuw op liggen, … Toch willen we dat idee niet kwijt. In een caravan leven, naast je tent, dat is voor ons echt circus. Het is meer dan in een theater spelen en op hotel gaan. Dus daar gaan we ooit echt voor, als we al wat geld hebben verdiend, een netwerk en meer ervaring hebben, en met de juiste mensen. We hebben geen zin om er nu als naïeve jongetjes volle bak in te vliegen en na twee jaar volledig uitgeblust te zijn. Daar hebben we ons al eens mee verbrand, toen we begonnen met Collectif Malunés. Het werd op een bepaald moment zo zwaar dat we geen zin meer hadden om te spelen. Dan ben je verder van huis dan ooit. Nu willen we vooral proeven van veel verschillende dingen. Een eigen nummer, in een cabaret spelen, traditioneel circus, een groot evenement, een theatervoorstelling, samenwerken met een ander gezelschap, …”
Houdbaarheidsdatum
Het heeft bijna iets lugubers, gemeens, wanneer je aan jonge acrobaten, knisperend van fit- en frisheid vraagt naar de houdbaarheidsdatum van hun artiestenbestaan. Ze kijken elkaar aan. “Daar heb ik nog nooit over nagedacht,” geeft Simon eerlijk toe. “Ik wel,” zegt Arne nuchter. “Ik zou later graag lesgeven, jonge gezelschappen begeleiden. Ik wil later zo’n plek hebben waar je kunt trainen, een creatie maken, elkaar helpt en adviseert, leert van elkaar. Een plek waar je veel ontmoetingen hebt, waar ook BMX-ers, gasten van urban arts, extreme sporten komen trainen, waardoor er uitwisselingen ontstaan. Eigenlijk een beetje wat Ell Circo d’ell Fuego met het Pakhuis doet. Zij hebben ons zoveel gegeven: het lenen van een portiek, een loods om de voorstelling te herwerken, een plek om te trainen, een try-out op de Extreme Convention. De manier waarop zij hun leerlingen begeleiden, voorbereiden op de circushogeschool, op zowel technisch als mentaal vlak is bewonderenswaardig. Ze gaan zelfs mee naar de audities.”
Bericht aan de mama’s
Tijdens het praten over audities zit Simon plots rechtop en declameert, bijna plechtig: “Aan alle Vlaamse mama’s, laat je kinderen in het buitenland studeren! Ik denk echt dat als je bijvoorbeeld aan de ESAC in Brussel studeert, en elk weekend naar huis gaat met lege tupperwarepotjes en je vuile was, dat dat het groeiproces in je hoofd als artiest vertraagt.” Arne knikt instemmend. “In Vlaanderen zit de cultuur van ‘huisje, tuintje, boompje, beestje’ erg ingebakken. Een circusschool is niet alleen ‘verder studeren’, maar ook een groei in een ‘way of life’.”
