Een wandelende encyclopedie als het over de Belgische circusgeschiedenis gaat, zo kan je André De Poorter nog het best omschrijven. Vandaag wijdt hij uit over enkele Belgische artiesten die in het begin van de twintigste eeuw hun succes zochten en vonden in Amerika.
Tijdens de seizoenen 1899 tot 1903 bezocht Circus Barnum and Bailey, met zijn ‘grootste schouwspel ter wereld’ het Europese vasteland. Ook in ons land sloeg dit reuzenbedrijf zijn tenten op, tussen 8 oktober en 17 november 1901. Vijftien Belgische steden kwamen aan de beurt: Luik, Verviers, Namen, Charleroi, Brussel, Leuven, Mechelen, Antwerpen, Gent, Brugge, Ieper, Roeselare, Kortrijk, Doornik en Bergen.
Na dat bezoek, dat heel ons land had beroerd en overdonderd, droomden nogal wat artiesten, vooral acrobaten, ervan om in Amerika aan de slag te kunnen bij Circus Barnum and Bailey of het Ringling Bros Circus. Deze twee circussen reisden tot 1919 met aparte shows, alhoewel Ringling reeds in 1907 eigenaar werd van het Barnum and Bailley Circus. Sommige Belgische artiesten slaagden erin om een contract te versieren in de States en ze deden het niet enkel voor de eer of het avontuur, maar vooral voor de hoge gages. Ze moesten ervoor met de boot de lange overtocht maken en er meestal hun gezin voor achterlaten. Er zijn er zelfs die daar definitief zijn gebleven. We belichten slechts enkele van hen.
Joseph De Kock
Brusselaar Joseph De Kock vormde rond 1904 een eigen acrobatentroep. Samen met zijn vrouw Laura Clarke, een neef en Antoine Lefevre vertrok het viertal op 1 december 1904 vanuit Antwerpen met de ‘Vaderland’, met als bestemming New York City. Aanvankelijk traden ze op in music-halls als ‘hand balancers’. In 1906 waren ze al in engagement bij Ringling Bros. Daarna zou het echtpaar De Kock, met medewerking van diverse artiesten als troep Joe De Koe (soms ook Joe Deko’s of Joe De Kos Troepe genoemd), bijval oogsten bij zowel Barnum and Bailey als Ringling Bros. Einde 1921, toen hij veertig jaar was, stopte Joseph ermee en werd rentenier. Later is hij zelfs naar Brussel teruggekeerd, waar hij meerdere huizen bezat, maar overleed uiteindelijk in 1973 in Sarasota.
Joseph Lafaille
Een andere acrobatentroep werd gevormd door Antwerpenaar Joseph Lafaille. Na een reeks optredens in onder meer Berlijn en Rotterdam, vertrokken deze krachtacrobaten vanuit Liverpool met de ‘Lusitania’, om op 20 maart 1909 op Ellis Island te ontschepen. Startend in Chicago, werd een volledig seizoen gespeeld bij Barnum and Bailey. Na enkele wintermaanden in ons land trok Lafaille met een zeskoppige groep, allemaal Antwerpenaars, terug de grote plas over voor een tweede seizoen bij Barnum and Bailey.
Henri Frans
Gentenaar Henri Frans waagde zich vanaf 1910 ook aan een Amerika-avontuur. Gedurende twee seizoenen vertoonde hij bij Barnum and Bailey, samen met een leerling, als Bento Brothers een sensationeel nummer met evenwicht op vrijstaande ladder. In 1912 was hij weer bij zijn gezin en vormde hij het Frans Bento Trio met stadsgenoten Polydoor De Baets en Joseph Laporte. In 1913 en 1914 stonden de drie in Amerika op de affiche van Ringling Brothers. In 1915 gaf Henri Frans het artiestenbestaan op en opende in de Gentse Lammerstraat het artiestencafé Bento’s Bar. Vanaf 1931 werd hij dan uitbater van café Bento, op de hoek van de Wondelgemstraat en de Filips Van Cleeflaan, een herberg die nog steeds bestaat onder die naam.
Merkwaardig is het feit dat de acrobatentroepen Joe De Koe, Delafaille en Bento Brothers alle drie in 1910 bij Barnum and Bailey aan de slag waren. Dus een Belgisch gezelschap van Brusselaars, Antwerpenaars en Gentenaars. Iets om fier op te zijn. Op zondag werd er nooit opgetreden. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat deze artiesten tijdens hun vrije zondagen regelmatig samen op stap waren. Zo bezochten ze op 1 juli 1910 de Niagara-watervallen.
