Drie circusgezelschappen zitten gebeiteld voor de komende vijf jaar: Circus Ronaldo, Rode Boom en Side-Show krijgen structurele ondersteuning. De bezielers achter die gezelschappen hebben alvast één ding gemeen: ‘We zijn waanzinnig blij.’
Circus Ronaldo was als een kind zo blij met de structurele subsidies. Met het geld wil de compagnie inzetten op zakelijke professionalisering en artistieke verbreding.
“We waren waanzinnig blij,” zo herinnert Danny Ronaldo zich het heuglijke bericht dat Circus Ronaldo de komende vijf jaar telkens 403.000 euro ontvangt. “We strijden al heel lang voor structurele subsidies voor het circus. Mijn vader (Johnny Ronaldo, red.) maakte nog de jaren mee waarin er géén geld was voor circus, waarbij circus enkel werd gezien als commercie en iets voor de kermis. Die tijd is gelukkig lang voorbij.”
Tot nu toe ontving Circus Ronaldo projectsubsidies en steun voor tournees binnen het Circusdecreet. “Maar onze werking gaat over projecten heen en vereist structurele middelen,” aldus Danny. “We zijn met zoveel voorstellingen tegelijk bezig, en we hebben ook heel wat materiaal dat we moeten onderhouden, zoals tenten en tribunes. Onze compagnie is van een groot kaliber. Daarvoor is een structurele subsidie bijna noodzakelijk.”
Niet dat er de eerstkomende jaren veel verschil merkbaar zal zijn op artistiek vlak, denkt hij. “De voorbije jaren spendeerden we onze budgetten altijd maximaal in het artistieke – anders zouden we internationaal ook niet zoveel succes hebben gehad. Maar nu is er door de structurele steun meer kans om extra mensen aan te werven en zo ook op zakelijk vlak te professionaliseren. Want volstonden voor onze eerste verre buitenlandse voorstelling in 1996 in IJsland nog vier faxen, dan zijn er nu voor een doorsnee opvoering in Duitsland makkelijk 100 mails nodig. Er is alleen maar meer bureaucratie bijgekomen.”
Investeren in duurzaamheid, zo luidt de filosofie achter het vijfjarenplan van Ronaldo. Niet alleen op zakelijk vlak, maar ook voor de jonge generatie circusartiesten. Onder wie ook de kinderen van Danny, die stilaan volwassen worden en steeds meer hun plaats opeisen in het familiecircus. “Volgend jaar gaat Sono Io? in première, een duetvoorstelling die ik maak met mijn zoon Pepijn en die vooral internationaal zal toeren,” aldus Danny. “Op termijn willen we meer jonge mensen mee laten spelen in onze producties, andere gezelschappen coachen en vaker samenwerken met theatergroepen. We zijn op artistiek vlak altijd een gesloten compagnie geweest. Dat willen we nu meer opengooien.”
Daarvan zal het jubileumfestival voor 50 jaar Circus Ronaldo, gepland eind 2021, een eerste voorbeeld zijn. “Daar zullen we ook andere gezelschappen uitnodigen. En wie weet kunnen over enkele jaren ook andere artiesten producties creëren onder Ronaldo-vlag.”
Structurele ondersteuning betekent voor Quintijn Ketels en Aline Breucker van Side-Show meer tijd voor hun artistiek onderzoek naar het raakvlak tussen circus en beeldende kunst.
“Het blijft paradoxaal: op een moment dat de wereld aan het crashen is, is er het nieuws dat wij perspectieven krijgen die we de voorbije vijftien jaar nooit eerder hebben gehad,” vertelt Aline Breucker. “Dankzij deze subsidie hoeven we geen compromissen te maken en kunnen we volop tijd nemen om onze praktijk te ontwikkelen.” Een instrument daarvoor zijn de tien artistieke laboratoria onder de noemer What if die Side-show de komende vijf jaar wil realiseren. “Hiermee willen we de plaats vrijwaren voor experimenten die niet meteen leiden tot een product,” klinkt het bij Quintijn Ketels. “Maar evengoed vormen zij de vrucht voor een project binnen vijf of tien jaar, door ons of door andere artiesten.”
Collectiviteit, zorgzaamheid, uitwisseling: het zijn rode draden in de plannen van Side-Show. “Quintijn en ik vervelen ons een beetje als we met twee zijn,” grapt Aline. “Het zijn anderen die ons inspireren.” Zo zal Side-Show samenwerken met twee huisdramaturgen: Vincent Focquet en Marie Henry. Er komt een deeltijdse zakelijke en productiemedewerker. Maar vooral: zowel in het What if-luik als in de drie geplande producties zet Side-Show volop in op artistieke kruisbestuiving met andere (circus)kunstenaars.
Neem nu Portraits, hun komende creatie in 2021. Het zijn twee voorstellingen in één, vertelt Quintijn. “We portretteren twee circusartiesten: Camille Paycha en Sander De Cuyper. Hun profiel is heel uiteenlopend, maar we voelen affiniteit met beiden. Portraits draait dus niet om ons, maar om hén.” Een jaar later volgt een grote creatie: Permit, oh permit my soul to be rebel, het slotluik van hun trilogie van de verbeelding. Hiervoor werken ze met vijf acrobaten, maar ook met een grote groep figuranten, aangevuld met lokale vrijwilligers op elke speelplek. “Dat hoeven geen acrobaten te zijn,” aldus Aline. “De kracht van verbeelding, de interne rebellie en het durven dromen waar de voorstelling over gaat: het zijn zaken die iederéén kent.”
Side-Show wil zich niet beperken tot de black box. In 2024 komt er een creatie in de publieke ruimte, een sculpturaal ankerpunt. “Als we de theatrale machinerie en alle techniek die erbij hoort niet meer hebben, hoe maken we dan toch een fascinerend in situ project?” zo verwoordt Aline het uitgangspunt.
Maar dat is niet alles. Side-Show zal de komende tijd als curator optreden voor CIRKLABO in Leuven en Miramiro in Gent. Het gezelschap wil experimenteren met het idee van ‘relaxed performances’ die toegankelijk zijn voor iedereen. En er komen ook twee publicaties: over hun trilogie en het What if-parcours. “We willen onze eigen praktijk ontleden,” aldus Quintijn. “We willen woorden geven aan wat we tot nu niet onder woorden hebben kunnen brengen.”
Voor mentalist Kurt Demey komt de structurele subsidie als geroepen. In plaats van te temporiseren, kan hij nu voluit gaan voor zijn artistieke projecten.
“Tot voor deze structurele subsidie zaten we met Rode Boom wat aan ons plafond,” vertelt Kurt Demey, artistiek leider van Rode Boom. “We waren serieus aan het denken om een paar stappen terug te zetten, bijvoorbeeld door minder te spelen of niet meer in het buitenland te toeren. Deze subsidie is voor ons dus een grote mogelijkheid om verder te bouwen. In juli hadden we Lien (Vanbossele, red.) al aangetrokken als productiemedewerker, en ik ben heel blij dat we haar nu kunnen houden. De eerste tien jaar deed ik alles alleen bij de compagnie, nu is het de bedoeling om zoveel mogelijk uit mijn handen te trekken.” (lacht)
In het verleden vroeg Kurt Demey voor alle creaties een projectsubsidie aan. Daardoor kon een project pas starten eens het budget er was. “Met vaste middelen hebben zal het sneller lukken om coproducenten te overtuigen om mee te stappen in een creatie, net omdat er dus al een deel van het budget op tafel ligt. Nu kunnen we op vijf jaar realiseren wat we zonder deze subsidie pas op acht jaar hadden kunnen doen.”
Die artistieke plannen voor de komende vijf jaar bestaan uit twee grote voorstellingen, vier kleine producties en het vooronderzoek voor een vijfde creatie. “Momenteel ben ik aan het werken aan The space in between, een voorstelling rond realiteiten, voorzien voor oktober 2021. Kamiel De Bruyne (de bedenker van het tv-programma ‘Sorry voor alles’, red.) wordt hiervoor mijn klankbord: met hem wil ik onderzoeken wat we kunnen doen met puzzels. En in 2022 begin ik aan het onderzoek voor De stad als mentalist, een project voor de publieke ruimte dat moet uitkomen in 2024.”
In de toekomst kijken, het moet een van Demeys speciale gaven zijn. Zo weet hij zelfs al waar hij in 2025 mee bezig zal zijn, vertelt hij. “Dan maak ik een voorstelling over trance. Ik ben nu al bezig met het vooronderzoek. Al mijn projecten kennen een lange aanloop, hoor.”
De structurele subsidie staat Demey ook toe om nieuwe uitdagingen op te zoeken. “Zo staan vier Experimentals gepland. Dat zijn kleinere projecten waarin ik met anderen samenwerk. In 2021 werk ik met een medische wetenschapper rond de ongekende dingen uit ons lichaam die we kunnen gebruiken om illusies te creëren. Het doel is om telkens minstens de sporen van dat onderzoek te tonen in een voorstelling.”
Maar dat is niet alles. Demey wil ook vaker regisseren bij andere gezelschappen. En hij plant een boek over magie. “Het wordt een vol programma,” besluit hij met een understatement.
