Marie Vandecaveye, erfgoedmedewerkster van het Circuscentrum, bespreekt exclusief voor CircusMagazine een interessante publicatie uit ons documentatiecentrum. Vandaag: het boek ‘Het circus van Dottore Fausto’.
“Nog niet lang geleden las ik Het circus van Dottore Fausto van Pieter van Oudheusden (tekst) en Isabelle Vandenabeele (illustraties). Het is een prachtig jeugdboek, en het staat nu ook in de boekenkast van het Circuscentrum.
Tito is een jongen die op een dag besluit mee te gaan als knecht met het circus van Dottore Fausto. Deze circusdirecteur is een griezelig en sjofel figuur. Hij treedt op voor het publiek als de ‘Man van Wonderen’ en zegt bijna nooit iets. Fausto maakt Tito angstig maar ook nieuwsgierig. De artiesten van het circus praten wel tegen Tito. Er is een clown, een leeuwentemmer, een acrobaat en een dwerg. Iedereen sleept zijn eigen droevige verhaal met zich mee. De histories van de artiesten maken indruk op Tito, net als hun koppige fierheid. Maar over Dottore Fausto zeggen ook zij weinig of niets. Het lijkt alsof de Dottore en zijn circus op de vlucht zijn voor iets of iemand; na elke voorstelling kan het niet snel genoeg opkramen om naar een volgende plek te racen. Stilaan komt Tito te weten wat er aan de hand is. De waarheid is al even griezelig als de Dottore zelf. De lotgevallen van circus Fausto vallen perfect samen met het beeld van een grillig en rauw circusbestaan. Waarom achteromkijken? Dat is nergens goed voor.
De titel doet al vermoeden dat het verhaal van Dottore Fausto een bewerking is van de Duitse Faust-legende. Die gaat over het leven van ene Duitse dokter Faustus die in de 16e eeuw leefde. Hij was bezig met magie en astrologie en werd overal weggejaagd. Vlak na zijn dood (ca. 1540) ontstond het gerucht dat hij een pact zou hebben gesloten met de duivel. Deze legende was ook de basis voor Goethes Faust uit 1806.
En wie kent nog de veelgeprezen televisiereeks Carnivale waarin een rondreizende kermisbende wordt onderworpen aan de strijd tussen goed en kwaad? Net als in Carnivale is ook hier de kracht van het kwaad onmiddellijk voelbaar, vanaf de eerste bladzijde. Dat is voor een groot deel de prestatie van de illustratrice. Het circus van Dottore Fausto leest als een graphic novel. Pieter van Oudheusden heeft niet zo veel woorden nodig om zijn verhaal te vertellen, waardoor een grote rol voor het grafische is weggelegd. De techniek die wordt gebruikt voor de illustraties is houtsnede. De tekeningen doen soms denken aan de prenten van Frans Masereel die met een gelijkaardige techniek werkte.
Illustratrice Isabelle Vandenabeele is zeker niet de eerste die grafisch aan de slag gaat met circus. Het is een dankbaar onderwerp om beeldend mee te werken. Ze tovert met de sfeer die het circus uitademt en de eigenzinnigheid van de mensen die circus maken. Het blijft boeiend tot het einde, ook al gebruikt ze slechts de kleuren zwart en rood; de duivel is nooit ver weg.
Het boek vertelt een klassiek verhaal, met traditionele circuselementen. De clown en acrobaat ontbreken niet, en ook de dieren krijgen een rolletje. De vormgeving en het onconventionele personage Tito geven echter een draai aan de hele vertelling. Onlangs was het boek ook één van de winnaars van het initiatief Best Vormgegeven Boek 2011, dat uitgaat van de Vlaamse Uitgevers Vereniging.”
