Laten we voor eens en voor altijd een hardnekkig misverstand uit de weg ruimen. Het Vlaamse circus heeft zijn onstuitbare opkomst NIET te danken aan de getalenteerde artiesten en de gemotiveerde lesgevers, noch aan de financiële steun van de overheid, het goed uitgebalanceerde circusbeleid of het Circuscentrum-op-volle-toeren. Het Vlaamse circus heeft alles te danken aan de mama’s en de papa’s.
Mama’s en papa’s als chauffeur en decorbouwer, costumière en kookploeg, geldschieter, boekhouder en manusje-van-alles, criticus van het eerste uur, leverancier van ongevraagd artistiek commentaar en eersteklas supporter.
Mama’s en papa’s die zich ongetwijfeld vaak afvragen hoe uitgerekend zij in godsnaam circusgenen hebben doorgegeven en die vertwijfeld hun stamboom uitpluizen op zoek naar een betovergrootvader met een circusverleden.
Mama’s en papa’s die stiekem af en toe hopen dat het voor zoon- of dochterlief bij een hobby blijft. Een goed diploma is belangrijk en dat circus begint toch wel héél veel tijd in beslag te nemen.
Mama’s en papa’s die als het dan toch zover komt samen met hun kroost alle zekerheden overboord gooien. Doen circusartiesten wel aan pensioensparen?
En dan vergeet ik nog de moeders die hun dochters of zonen vaak meters hoog boven de grond “Kijk eens mama, zonder handen” de meest halsbrekende toeren zien uithalen.
Mama’s en papa’s, het zijn de ondergewaardeerde helden van het circus!
