In onze artikelenreeks over circushogescholen belanden we dit keer bij de wereldbefaamde Ecole Nationale de Cirque de Montréal (Canada). En we hebben geluk: de Vlaming Arno Wauters (25) studeerde er in 2007 af en staat ons vandaag in Gent te woord.
Arno Wauters: “De Ecole Nationale de Cirque is de natte droom voor circusartiesten. Het hele gebouw is namelijk echt gemaakt voor circus. Alle faciliteiten zijn er, de beveiliging is optimaal en een hele crew van riggers staat continu paraat om je te helpen. De omkadering kan met andere woorden niet beter zijn.”
Hoe ziet de opleiding er concreet uit?
“De opleiding zelf duurt drie jaar. Je krijgt vakken als handstand, trampoline, acrobatie, theater, klassieke en hedendaagse dans, jongleren, en natuurlijk je zelf gekozen discipline. Bij mij was dat Duits rad. In het derde jaar horen vakken als ‘Career management’ en ‘Show creation and production’ ook tot het lessenpakket. Uiteindelijk krijg je ofwel het volwaardig Canadees diploma DEC, ofwel het diploma van de hogeschool zelf (DEE). Er zijn maximaal 20 studenten per jaar, en ik kan je verzekeren: je kan niet anders dan er keihard voor gaan. Je moet werken en presteren. Als je ’s avonds thuis komt, kook je wat eten en ga je daarna direct slapen. Anders hou je het niet vol.”
Het zijn niet de minsten die in Montréal worden toegelaten. Had je al veel ervaring in de circuswereld?
“Niet echt. Ik was vroeger een hyperactief kind en sportte veel. Vooral basket was mijn ding. Ik volgde ook de lagere school voor ballet in Antwerpen, maar daarna ben ik gewoon in het secundair onderwijs beland. Mijn eerste ervaring met circus was de préparation concours in Espace Catastrophe (Brussel). Daarna heb ik het voorbereidend jaar in de circusschool van Chatellerault gevolgd. Dat was blijkbaar een goede voorbereiding op Montréal, want tot mijn eigen verbazing geraakte ik door de audities.”
Hoe onderscheidt Montréal zich van andere circushogescholen?
“Montréal behoort volgens mij tot de drie beste circushogescholen van de wereld. Peking en Moskou zijn de andere twee. Het perfect uitgeruste gebouw is uiteraard een enorm pluspunt, maar ook inhoudelijk is het niveau erg hoog. Je krijgt een brede basis mee, je leert echt clean te zijn in je bewegingen. Op afwerking en flexibiliteit wordt continu gehamerd. Bovendien is er een specifiek programma voor elke discipline. Daarnaast kan je er ook terecht voor een middelbare opleiding, hetgeen de doorstroming van jong talent naar professional verzekert. Montréal werkt tot slot nauw samen met de circushogeschool van San Fransisco en sinds kort is ze ook lid van de FEDEC, de Europese organisatie voor circushogescholen. Dat is wel sterk voor een Canadese hogeschool!”
Zijn er ook minpunten aan de opleiding?
“Er zijn er twee. Ten eerste word je echt klaargestoomd voor een carrière in Noord-Amerika. Je maakt solo’s van zeven minuten die perfect passen in een grote, spectaculaire show. In Europa ben je daar niet veel mee: hier verwachten ze een voorstelling van 40 minuten die volledig op zichzelf staat. Ten tweede bouw je een netwerk op waar je vooral in Noord-Amerika de vruchten van plukt. Toen ik terug in België kwam, moest ik op dat vlak praktisch van nul beginnen, natuurlijk ook omdat ik geen voorgeschiedenis had in het Vlaamse circusmilieu. Ik ben dan ook heel blij dat ik voor circusatelier Ell Circo d’Ell Fuego kan lesgeven en van daaruit mijn weg kan verder zetten.”
