Tijdens het internationaal theaterfestival Théâtre en Mai in het Franse Dijon en voor het eerst in 27 jaar, bouwen paarden samen met professionele en amateuracteurs een coproductie uit: ‘Waar dromen paarden ‘s nachts van om overdag zo angstig te zijn?’.
“Het theater geraakt niet uit zijn ivoren toren. Het valt steeds terug op een elite die zowel van educatieve, economische of artistieke aard kan zijn. Daarom zoeken we nu bewust nieuwe banden op. Het populaire van de kermis of het circus kan ons nieuw publiek aanbrengen. Daarom hebben we dit jaar ook de Quermesse van Ménetreux geprogrammeerd naast Oekraïense, Spaanse, Amerikaanse, Belgische (Fabrice Murgia) en uiteraard Franse theatergroepen.” Zo stellen de organisatoren hun keuze voor dit jaar voor. In het totaal staan 17 spektakels geprogrammeerd.
De regisseur van de “Compagnie des Gens” uit het nabije Chatillon sur Seine, Jacques Senelet, rijdt zelf, als amateur, al vele jaren paard. “Toen ik hoorde dat ze in Dijon een grote open ruimte gaven voor een totaal nieuwe productie op een totaal ongewone plaats, voelde ik het meteen kriebelen. Onze theatergroep wordt sowieso niet erg au sérieux genomen door de ‘institutionelen’ en dus konden wij zonder gevaar voor gezichtsverlies onze kans grijpen.”
Senelet: “Paarden zijn niet bijzonder intelligent maar ze hebben een zeer sterk emotioneel reservoir. Als vluchtdieren zijn ze uiterst alert en gevoelig. Paarden zijn al eeuwenlang mythologische symbolen. Ze begeleiden de mens bij leven en dood, bij oorlogen, bij veroveringen en plezier. We willen die band uitvergroten en als spiegel voor ons als mens hanteren.”
De plek is ook heel bijzonder. De manege van Saussy werd gebouwd rond 1870. Het gebouw is rond en heeft een diameter van 30 meter. Er zijn geen steunpalen en het houten dak werd gebouwd als een paraplu waarvan nadien de steel werd afgesneden. Het zou zo als voorbeeld voor de pistes van Zingaro in Aubervilliers hebben kunnen gediend. Het ligt midden in een bos en is eigenlijk vér van de bewoonde wereld. Een Parijse paardenleraar kocht het – in ruïne verkerend – pand in 1988 en herbouwde vooral de manege die nu als trainingscentrum wordt gebruikt. Théâtre en Mai plaatste er enkele gradins en zo kunnen er per voorstelling een goede tweehonderd toeschouwers binnen.
Het brengt de wereld gezien door paardenogen. Het is ook een verzameling teksten van klassieke en hedendaagse auteurs die als thema onder andere God, liefde en dood, vrijheid, gerecht, het leven op het kerkhof, … uitwerken. Regelmatig komen paarden mee in het stuk. Ze worden bereden of het is in een meer nabije samenwerking. Paarden zijn ook af en toe mee toeschouwer op het mensenspel.
Soms is er een heel nauw contact tussen een amazone en haar paard. Emeline Husseret creëert een dichte band met haar paarden en toont dressuur die mooi – zij het dan in veel beperktere mate – aansluit bij wat Frédéric Pignon bij Cavalia of destijds Rolf Knie in zijn komische tussenspelen met paard bracht. Het geheel wordt door een pittig orkest begeleid. Er zitten ook heel wat leuke stukken in zoals het klassiek ‘paardjesspel’ waarbij mensen de pionnen vormen en de paarden met de dobbelstenen gooien.
Het anderhalf uur durend experiment vliegt zo voorbij. Het publiek past zich ook wonderwel én onbewust aan de verschillende logica’s aan. Zo komt er spontaan applaus als de paarden een knap stukje brengen of als de kwaliteit van de relatie mens-paard erg sterk naar boven komt. Maar het applaus blijft uit voor de mens in zijn theaterrol. Pas op het einde komt er, zoals het in het theater hoort, een sterk applaus. Al bij al is het een gelukte fusion tussen theater en paardendressuur. Het hoogtepunt ligt in de nabijheid tussen mens en dier als het paard zich, net als een hond of kat, nestelt bij zijn begeleidster. Een aansprekend moment van wederzijds vertrouwen.
