Een onwaarschijnlijk straffe en urenlange voorstelling, mét functioneel naakt. Terechte laureaten van Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe 2010-2011 (nu CircusNext). Brits recensent John Ellingsworth sprak met Erwan Ha Kyoon Larcher, een van de acrobaten van het gezelschap Ivan Mosjoukine.
Drie jaar lang werkten de vier artiesten van Ivan Mosjoukine aan hun eerste voorstelling. Met ‘De nos jours (notes on the circus)’ brengt het collectief een circusvoorstelling die zich lijkt af te spelen in het brandpunt van z’n eigen ontploffing: het speelvlak wordt immers afgebakend door een wit op de vloer getapet vierkant. Alle objecten die tijdens deze 2 uur en 40 minuten durende voorstelling de revue zullen passeren (een bijl, een allegaartje aan aardewerk en tafelkleedjes, een jukebox, een Chinese mast en een drumstel) werden netjes over de witte randen van het vierkant geschoven. De voorstelling zelf is opgedeeld in 81 scènes of ‘notities’, die één voor één worden afgeteld op een verlicht scorebord aan de muur. Het publiek krijgt flyers met 81 mogelijke titels.
Volgens Erwan Ha Kyoon Larcher, een van de acrobaten en auteurs van Ivan Mosjoukine, is dit gedeconstrueerde systeem van notities het logische gevolg van het verlangen om zonder regisseur te werken: “We weten dat we alle vier heel verschillende mensen zijn, dus was een van onze grootste vragen hoe we elk onszelf konden blijven in een geheel. Ik denk dat we de voorstelling daarom hebben opgedeeld in notities: zonder regisseur is dit een manier om de stem te bewaren van iemand die aan de buitenkant zit mee te kijken. Want met alle vier de artiesten op scène is er geen weg die juister is dan de andere.”
Werken met een regisseur zou ook betekend hebben dat Ivan Mosjoukine de voorstelling had moeten definiëren van bij het begin, terwijl deze artiesten hun werk willen laten leven en veranderen binnen de lijnen van een vooraf bedacht concept. Erwan spreekt over de noodzaak om een zekere ‘spanning’ te bewaren: het is belangrijk om zich niet te nestelen in bepaalde verhoudingen en om tegenstrijdige meningen niet te willen verzoenen. Hun doel was het delen van de macht, niet om gelijken te worden, maar om elk even ‘ongelijk’ te zijn als de ander. En wanneer het tijd werd om alle notities tot een stuk te maken, onderhandelden ze met elkaar. “We werkten vaak rond de tafel,” zegt Erwan. “We praatten veel en lang. We gaven elke scène of notitie een naam, schreven die op een stukje papier en probeerden de scène dan visueel uit te werken. Daarna gingen we aan de slag op de vloer, maar er was steeds een wisselwerking tussen de tafel en de scène.”
Als toeschouwer voel je hoe het gezelschap voorrang geeft aan het denken. Ivan Mosjoukine stelt vragen in plaats van antwoorden te geven (Erwan: “Vragen zijn er altijd. Oplossingen zijn vaak zo… doorzichtig.”). De voorstelling ontwikkelt z’n ritme doorheen herhaling, maar dan wel het soort herhaling dat een ontwrichtend en steeds veranderend effect heeft. Zo bestaan drie van de 81 notities uit Erwan zelf die een handstand doet. De beweging is iedere keer dezelfde, het evenwicht is (bijna) identiek, maar telkens draagt hij minder kleren terwijl hij (uiteindelijk naakt) de duur van zijn handstand telkens laat bepalen door een willekeurig object: de tijd die het duurt voor een moor om water aan de kook te brengen of voor een broodrooster om een boterham te toasten. Elke herhaling heeft op zichzelf geen betekenis, maar maakt de algehele betekenis van het stuk steeds troebeler, tot je je uiteindelijk afvraagt wat je hier toch allemaal van moet denken. Terwijl steeds die notities worden afgeteld. Het publiek blikt telkens vluchtig in de flyers, een beetje zoals je op een opvouwbare kaart kijkt als je beseft dat je verdwaald bent op een mistige landweg met mysterieuze straatnaambordjes.
De artiesten van Ivan Mosjoukine zijn jong en toch er is iets vertrouwds aan ‘De nos jours’. Het is dat scherpe gevoel voor het absurde en de ontoereikendheid van de taal, die besluitloosheid die aanvoelt als verplichting, die angst om zich bloot te geven en die onvermoeibare bevraging van elke betekenis. Kortom: het is dat wat existentialisme heet. Ik vraag Erwan of Ivan Mosjoukine kwaad is. “Misschien,” zegt hij. “Misschien is het iets existentieels. Op een dag stopt het gewoon en tussen die twee momenten van geboorte en dood… Wat? Wat kan ik doen? Het is een heel simpele vraag die tegelijk zo complex is. Complex ook voor ons als mens, want hoe kunnen we in godsnaam echt nadenken over onze levens en hoe we die (kunnen) leven? En hiervoor is circus gewoon het materiaal, net zoals woorden materiaal zijn. Ze zijn immers het enige wat we hebben om mee te spreken.”
