De Zomer van Antwerpen bracht dit jaar drie erg verscheiden circusproducties. Om meer kaarten beschikbaar te kunnen stellen, huurden ze een grote circustent met zo’n 1200 zitjes bij het Deense circus Arena. Het Franse Akoréacro begon de reeks: Zeven mannen dingen naar de gunsten van de quasi ongenaakbare Claire. Vier muzikanten spelen de hele avond door een fascinerende mengeling van jazz, gipsy, hedendaagse muziek en een schitterend beatboxduel wat ook de titel van de voorstelling oplevert: Pfffff.
Jullie voorstelling is gebaseerd op een waardegebonden sprookje?
Claire Aldaya: “Inderdaad, en het zijn ook deze waarden die de basis van ons collectief uitmaken. Vriendschap, solidariteit, respect voor engagement, noodzaak om jezelf te zijn en het recht om te verschillen onder elkaar. Deze waarden hebben we geleerd op de Circusschool van Moskou waar we twee jaar studeerden. We hadden toen de circusschool van Châtellerault en deels ook Chalons gevolgd en we bleven eigenlijk op onze honger. Te weinig praktijk, té eng-directief gericht.”
“Vaak hebben buitenstaanders het beeld dat de Oost-Europese scholen onnoemlijk streng zijn. Wel, wij leerden daar vooral als collectief samenwerken. Onze leraar Vladimir Alexiev Fieudrovic werd wees op zijn negende en werd opgenomen in een circusgezelschap. Zijn eigen plek vinden in een groep was dus zijn overlevingsstrategie. Als ervaringsdeskundige bracht hij ons met zijn verhalen een kader én woorden. Hij leerde ons spanningen en successen in groep zien, accepteren en vooral mee verder werken. We zijn nu tien jaar samen en dit is een ongelooflijke rijkdom. Vroeger had je veel acrobatiegroepen, nu steeds minder. De wereld is alsmaar individualistischer geworden. En toch schuilt in het genereuze van de dagelijkse dialoog-in-groep de kracht om én vrijheid én stipte strengheid en zelfdiscipline te verzoenen. Zo leerden we bij de Russen onze praktijk.”
En nu ga je nog verder ?
“Jawel, het is eigenlijk één helend proces. Ik had geen gemakkelijke jeugd en dit circusleven helpt me weer elke dag de essentie van het leven bewust te zien. Het moeten excelleren werd me van jongs af aan in de balletschool opgedrongen. En de circuskunst bood me een uitweg in mijn eigen dilemma’s. De groepswaarden zijn voor mij dan ook mijn ruggengraat. Ook willen we de basis van het circus niet vergeten. Circus is naast kunnen, ook verwondering evoceren. Circus is verrassend en zorgt voor krachttoeren waar toeschouwers ‘waauw’ op zeggen. Als die condities er niet zijn, dan is het voor mij geen circus.”
Installation
Twee broers Muntwyler van het Zwitserse circus Monti, de diabolo-innovators Tr’Espace en de componist-muzikant Lukas Staeger ontmoeten elkaar en werken organisch een samenspel uit dat als voorstelling – eerst onder vrienden én bekenden – kan dienen in de stallen van Monti in Wohlen. De broers Muntwyler hadden al een treffer met hun Puppaat-productie dat zich afspeelde in een bos bij Wohlen. Ook deze productie sloeg aan en werd uitgebreid naar een breder Zwitsers publiek. Toen kwam het idee om de stallen met een tent te wisselen. Zo kwamen ze voor het eerst naar buiten in Leuven op de Universitaire Ziekenhuizen-feesten. De Duitse circustheatergoeroe, Ute Classen, vond het direct de ontdekking én de vernieuwer van de ‘nouveau cirque’ van 2008. Sindsdien deden ze alle grote festivals én eindigden hun reeks in Antwerpen.
C!rca – Wunderkammer
Het Australische C!rca laat regisseur Yaron Lifschitz vooral met afgestudeerden uit Australische circusscholen werken. Hij bouwde nu ‘Wunderkammer’ uit die met twee aparte units de wereld rondtrekken. Ook deze voorstelling heeft niet echt een verhaal, maar wil beeldend emoties oproepen. C!rca verwonderde vooral door zijn geslaagde zoektocht naar de integratie van nieuwe bewegingen in bestaande circustechnieken. De originele soundtrack, die soms voor diepgang en dan weer voor humor zorgt, en de hedendaagse interpretatie van nostalgisch cabaret, maken het tot een vernieuwende en verrukkelijke voorstelling.
Fascinerend is hoe elk van de producties zijn heel eigen ontwikkeling kende. Akoréacro wil vooral groepsdynamisch werken en als hechte groep door het leven gaan. Installation verenigt artiesten die reeds langer – elk apart – hun sporen hebben verdiend en die tezelfdertijd ook nog lid zijn van diverse andere groepen. De voorstelling is erg organisch gegroeid en brengt mens en dier samen in een uniek samenspel. C!rca vertrekt dan weer van een productiecentrum en een school waar vooral de regisseur voor de creatie zorgt. Hij laat de artiesten wél toe hun persoonlijk tintje te geven aan één bepaald concept. Boeiend is ook dat Vlaanderen – onder de vorm van Salto Humano en Humorologie – bij de opstart van deze drie producties nauw betrokken was.
