Een wandelende encyclopedie als het over de Belgische circusgeschiedenis gaat, zo kan je André De Poorter nog het best omschrijven. Vandaag houdt hij de lange en verdienstelijke loopbaan van Lena en Raoul onder de loep, ook gekend onder de flitsende namen ‘Roulenas’ of ‘Bananas’.
Onlangs verwierf het Huis van Alijn de prachtige kostuumcollectie van het vroegere artiestenduo Lena Kayes (°1928) en Raoul Vermeiren (°1925). Op 5 november aanstaande zal het zestig jaar geleden zijn dat dit circusduo in Westminster (UK) in het huwelijksbootje trad. Ze hadden mekaar in 1950 leren kennen bij het Britse Circus Chipperfield.
Europese successen
Als geboren Brusselaar zat Raoul al vroeg in het vak, want amper veertien jaar oud vormde hij het acrobatisch duo Les Brisac met stadsgenoot Jos Batos. Van 1939 tot rond 1943 werkten de twee in variétés en circussen. Na de oorlog gingen ze uiteen en vervoegde Raoul tot 1959 de troep Bradfort, perchisten en wipplankspringers. Met hen beleefde hij successen in befaamde circussen en variétézalen in landen als Nederland, Zwitserland, Spanje, Griekenland, Portugal, Noorwegen, Zweden, Denemarken, Ierland, en zelfs Zuid-Afrika, Nieuw-Zeeland en Australië.
Lena zag het levenslicht in Belfast bij het Ierse Circus Duffy, waar haar moeder Priscilla als dochter van de eigenaar als leeuwentemster optrad. Lena presenteerde aanvankelijk een hondennummer samen met haar moeder. Na haar huwelijk in 1951 vervoegde ze met Raoul de troep Bradfort.
Veelzijdige artiesten
Na 1959 startten Lena en Raoul als zelfstandige artiesten het duo The Roulenas. Daarbij deden ze perche en komische acrobatie en waren ze onder meer aan de slag bij de circussen De Jonghe, Bouglione, Billy Smart, Franz Althoff, Bertram Mills en Vivi Schmidt. Vanaf de jaren zeventig waren ze meestal actief in eigen land bij de circussen Piste (1977), Jhony (1978), Apollo (1980) of Cirque de Paris (1986). Raoul bewees een veelzijdig artiest te zijn, want hij trad ook op als jongleur, clown en goochelaar. Daarbij steeds vakkundig bijgestaan door zijn echtgenote.
In december vorig jaar traden ze voor een laatste keer op tijdens een kerstgala in Frankrijk. Daarna werden hun kostuums en attributen definitief opgeborgen na samen zestig jaar circusentertainment te hebben gebracht tot zelfs op de Filippijnen. Ze genieten nu van een verdiende rust in hun woning te Anderlecht. Hun dochter Priscilla, zelfde voornaam als haar grootmoeder, trad een tijdlang in de sporen van haar ouders als antipodiste terwijl haar man Franci Dupont een glasbalansact voorstelde.
Maurice Béjart
In een periode dat circusateliers in Vlaanderen nog niet hip waren, maakte Raoul Vermeiren zich al verdienstelijk als lesgever. Op dat vlak mag hij een beetje als pionier beschouwd worden en zijn verdiensten dienaangaande mogen niet onderschat worden. Toen de Circusschool van Vlaanderen in 1980, opgezet door Jan Verroken, van start ging, was hij één van de monitoren. Het project kende evenwel een kort bestaan.
In 1982 leidde Raoul in Berchem-Antwerpen een één week durende stage in opdracht van de Antwerpse Mime Studio. Daarbij liet hij jonge mensen kennis maken met enkele circusdisciplines zoals acrobatie, jongleren, trapeze en equilibrisme. In 1986 gaf Vermeiren een circusopleiding voor volwassenen in Antwerpen. Zo leerde hij hen ondermeer de beginselen van de clownsentree uitgaande van klassieke clownsnummers. En wanneer Maurice Béjart acrobatische nummers inlaste in zijn choreografie voor het Ballet van de 20ste eeuw, werd op Raoul beroep gedaan om dit aan de balletdansers te leren.
