De nieuwe voorstelling van Claudio Stellato is verre van stoffig, inhoudelijk gezien dan. Toch zijn mondkapje en praktische veiligheidsbril geen overbodige luxe…
In deze uurdurende Sisyfusarbeid, de nieuwste voorstelling van Claudio Stellato getiteld ‘La Cosa’, spelen vier mannen in atypische houthakkerskleding; een driedelig pak. Zij zijn hard aan het werk, met als enige doel de enorme kubieke meters hout in de vierkante piste te verplaatsen.
De voorstelling start met een stilleven bestaand uit verschillende bouwwerken van hout. Dit landschap van objecten wordt langzaam afgebroken tot ieder deeltje en iedere speler los op de vloer zwerft. Tegelijkertijd met de afbraak van dit evenwicht start er een repetitie van bouwen en breken, van bouwen en breken en van bouwen en breken. Het verplaatsen van het hout houdt niet op. Het heldere geluid van het hout wordt gebruikt als enige muzikale ondersteuning, een zucht of kreet van de heren daar gelaten. Ze werken zich immers het ongans; 25 rondjes om een stapel hout en nog tien keer erbovenop. Een duw tegen de voorganger of een wedstrijdje om elkaar in te halen. Zweet, ruwheid, voorzichtigheid en evenwicht wisselen zich af in rap tempo. Soms een laatste houtje spanning, dan een zucht door het publiek als het blijft liggen op de wankele stapel.
Wanneer er plots begonnen wordt met houthakken, splijt dat het spektakel letterlijk vaneen. Het opgebouwde evenwicht van verplaatsen verdwijnt en verandert in een nieuwe intensiteit en gejaagdheid bij de heren. Van hout dat niet verplaatst wordt, maar gehakt. Er ontstaat een woeste razernij op een persoonlijk houtblok, waarbij de koppen van de heren glimmen met eenzelfde glinstering als de bijlkoppen. In het rondom gezeten publiek domineert er eveneens nieuwe onrust, het houthakken is spannend, zeker zo in de piste. Wat als een van de bijlkoppen los zou schieten? De splinters vliegen in ieder geval tot ver in het verstofte publiek. Mondkapjes en veiligheidsbril lijken geen overbodig luxe. De mannen echter vrezen niet voor hun lichaam, zij gaan er grof, bijna roekeloos mee om en storten zich consequent op het hout, de grond of elkaar.
De voorstelling lijkt te eindigen zoals ze begon, in een stillevend bouwwerk, de mannen één voor één het toneel verlatend. Een toegift van ritmisch houthakkende mannen vormt echter het echte einde. Prachtig en muzikaal, ritmiek van de bovenste plank, echter volkomen losstaand van al het voorgaande.
Daar waar zelfs de herhaling te repetitief wordt, geeft de voorstelling mogelijkheden om weg te dromen. Door de houthakkende heren word je vervolgens hardhandig teruggeroepen met de ritmische geweldpleging. De voorstelling voelt als een zoektocht van spelers die zich bevragen over de vrijheden van het bouwen en verplaatsen. Alleen zonder tot keuzes te komen. Het blijft als een veelvoud van losse delen. De voorstelling voelt daarmee als een nog niet voltooid onderzoek. Een klein beetje op een houtje bijten moet het publiek wel…
