Wie zich moeilijk iets kan voorstellen bij het begrip “hedendaags circus” hoeft zich niet meteen zorgen te maken. Het gebrek aan een definitie van dit fenomeen is misschien zelfs de belangrijkste eigenschap ervan. Het circus heeft zich namelijk in de laatste decennia vertakt in de meest diverse richtingen, en dit zonder zich volledig te ontwortelen van de vruchtbare en onuitputtelijke grond die traditie heet.
Een bijzonder goede weerspiegeling van die diversiteit is het aanbod van het circusfestival Theater op de Markt. Dit jaarlijkse evenement vindt plaats in de herfst van de oneven jaren in Dommelhof in Neerpelt en in de zomer van de even jaren in de binnenstad van Hasselt. Steeds weer trekt het festival artiesten en gezelschappen aan van over heel Europa en zelfs daarbuiten. Het weekend doorbrengen op dit unieke festival betekent van de ene verbazing in de andere vallen. Publieksvriendelijke en eerder traditionele voorstellingen staan geprogrammeerd naast experimentele producties die het medium van circus op een heel andere manier proberen te definiëren. Het festival toont aan dat het medium zich niet langer beperkt tot die voorstellingen waarbij verschillende spectaculaire acts, zoals de optredens van jongleurs, acrobaten, clowns en dierentemmers, mekaar in een incoherente, variété-achtige reeks opvolgen. Intussen is het circus toegetreden tot een geladen ruimte waarbinnen andere kunstvormen (zoals theater, dans en performance) en maatschappelijke thema’s (zoals gender, digitale technologie en politiek) het medium beïnvloeden, en vice versa.
Overigens is het circus sinds lang afgestapt van de circustent met de piste als exclusieve ruimte waarin het zijn praktijk uitoefent. Een echte behoefte aan die nomadische architectuur was er niet meer dankzij het meer vrijblijvende alternatief van de schouwburg. Dat de piste en de schouwburg vandaag naast elkaar gebruikt worden, impliceert dat de voorstellingen die er plaatsvinden op een fundamenteel verschillende manier ervaren worden. Terwijl de theatrale wereld van de piste zich langs alle zijden openbaart, is de theatrale wereld van de schouwbrug voor drie kwart gesloten, als een kijkdoos enkel toegankelijk via dat ene kijkgat. Wie in de piste optreedt, stelt zich bloot aan de sferische blik van het publiek. Wie daarentegen in de schouwburg optreedt, wordt slechts langs één kant waargenomen. Het is de bedoeling van dit essay om te achterhalen hoe deze twee ruimtelijke constellaties de ervaring van het circus beïnvloeden. Parallelle concepten uit de beeldende kunsten en enkele concrete kunstwerken zullen mij hierbij helpen, omdat ik geloof dat beide kunstvormen meer kunnen zeggen over elkaar. Via die omwegen hoop ik tot een andere manier van kijken te komen. Wat leren de eeuwenoude archetypes van de vrijstaande sculptuur en het tableau ons over het hedendaags circus? En wat zegt dat over de manier waarop kunstwerken met hun omgeving communiceren? Kortom, wat is de relatie tussen werk en toeschouwer?
Over het sculptuur en de piste
Het beeldhouwwerk ontvouwt zich in de driedimensionale ruimte, waardoor de toeschouwer het langs alle zijden kan doorgronden. Als toeschouwer bezit je een zekere vrijheid om een positie in te nemen tegenover het werk: je kan 360 graden rond het werk bewegen en je kiest voor een zekere afstand. De keuze om een bepaalde positie in te nemen, sluit vele andere posities uit op dat moment. Zo kan je bijvoorbeeld nooit De Denker van Rodin in de ogen kijken en op hetzelfde moment zijn rug zien. De toeschouwer vertrouwt er echter op dat het kunstwerk niet verandert op die plaatsen die hij niet (meer) kan zien, omdat het beeldhouwwerk uit een vaste materie bestaat. Op die voorwaarde kan hij de fragmentarische indrukken van het beeldhouwwerk samenstellen tot een Gesamteindruck, ook wel de persoonlijke impressie van het werk.
Bij de voorstelling in de piste kan het publiek ook vanuit meerdere perspectieven naar het schouwspel kijken. De toeschouwer kiest nog voor de aanvang van het spektakel voor één enkele positie, en neemt dus plaats met het besef dat hij maar één van de vele indrukken van de voorstelling zal krijgen. Wat dat betreft is de positie van de toeschouwer essentieel, omdat het zijn perceptie van het kunstwerk fundamenteel zal bepalen. Persoonlijke indrukken van de voorstelling vertonen hier echter tekortkomingen: Tijdens de voorstelling ‘Mad in Finland’ van Galapiat Cirque kon ik onmogelijk de gezichtsuitdrukkingen zien van de dames op de rola rola, en het hele openingstafereel bij Claudio Stellato’s ‘La Cosa’ was voor mij een blinde vlek aangezien een houten toren mijn zicht belemmerde. Dat er wel degelijk iets gebeurde op scène kon ik afleiden uit de reacties van het publiek tegenover mij. Net zoals bij de gewaarwording van het beeldhouwwerk percipiëren we de voorstelling in de piste via verschillende ruimtelijke standpunten ten opzichte van het werk. Omdat ik als toeschouwer van de voorstelling in de piste niet op verschillende plaatsen tegelijk aanwezig kan zijn, worden de lacunes in mijn eigen beleving deels ingevuld via het gedrag van mijn medetoeschouwers. Met andere woorden, de architecturale ruimte staat ons toe om sociaal te kijken en te beleven.
Een andere fundamentele eigenschap van het beeldhouwwerk is dat alle zijden in principe evenwaardig zijn, en dus dat er geen voor- of achterkant bestaat. De voorstelling in de piste hanteert een gelijkaardig principe. Steeds zoeken de artiesten naar een evenwicht om alle toeschouwers, ongeacht hun positie in de tribune, tevreden te stellen. Het feit dat spelers constant hun ruimtelijke focus verleggen en steeds handelen met een soort “rondom-bewustzijn” zorgt voor een buitengewone dynamiek. Het Franse circusgezelschap Akoreacro illustreert met de voorstelling ‘Klaxon’ wat ik met die dynamiek bedoel. Terwijl recht voor mijn neus een acrobaat flirt met zijn vrouwelijke collega, bekvechten twee muzikanten aan de andere kant van de piste. De ene gebeurtenis is niet belangrijker dan de andere om de voorstelling te begrijpen, en toch vinden ze tegelijkertijd plaats om zo veel mogelijk toeschouwers aan te spreken. Ook de zeven dames van ‘Mad in Finland’ hanteren diezelfde strategie. Ze stellen zichzelf op in de buitenrand van de piste waar ze elk op hun geheel eigen wijze houtblokken klieven. De visuele focus van het publiek divergeert van een centrale handeling naar zeven nevengeschikte handelingen.
Over het tableau en de schouwburg
In schril contrast met de voorstelling in de piste staat de voorstelling in de schouwburg, die nauw aansluit bij de beschouwing van het tableau. Het Franse woord “tableau” is afkomstig van het Latijnse tabula, wat bord of plank betekent. Het tableau, of simpelweg het schilderij, ontvouwt zich in de tweedimensionale ruimte en impliceert vlakheid. Er is dus maar één zijde die er toe doet, en voor de toeschouwer zijn de ruimtelijke posities ten opzichte van het werk dus beperkt. Ook kan de kijker het volledige kunstwerk aanschouwen in één enkele blik, wat onmogelijk is bij het sculptuur. Hetzelfde geldt voor de toeschouwer in de schouwburg, die samen met zijn medetoeschouwers in eenzelfde richting kijkt. De ruimtelijke samenstelling van de schouwburg belemmert de onderlinge communicatie tussen het publiek. Er is dan ook minder nood aan, aangezien elke toeschouwer min of meer dezelfde informatie ontvangt. Het denkwerk vergemakkelijkt door de voorstelling in de schouwburg te abstraheren tot een vlak, aangezien alle toeschouwers min of meer dezelfde beelden gewaarworden. Omdat de andere zijden van het podium toegedekt zijn, weten de spelers dat enkel de handelingen die gericht zijn naar dat ene “kijkgat” er toe doen.
Maar dat “kijkgat” is niet alleen een toegang tot het podium, het is tegelijk een sterk afgetekende grens tussen het publiek en de performer. De relatie tussen beiden is gesloten en soms zelfs geheimzinnig. Net zoals bij het schilderij, waarbij de bovenste lagen verf de onderliggende lagen toedekken, heeft de aanwezigheid van objecten of personen op het podium de potentie om achterliggende dingen te verhullen. Een kartonnen muur in ‘[hullu]’ van Blick Théâtre is het ultieme vehikel om een vierde persoon, de marionettiste Elise Nicod, gedurende de hele voorstelling onzichtbaar te maken. De bewegingen op het afvlakkende rasterdecor in Aurélien Bory’s ‘Azimut’ zouden niet op dezelfde manier “werken” in de piste. De schouwburg is met andere woorden de ideale ruimtelijke samenstelling voor een voorstelling vol gelaagde vlakheid en optische illusies.
Over Boeddha en camera(’s)
Een concreet en tastbaar sluitstuk op dit denkwerk is de vergelijking tussen de kunstwerken ‘TV Buddha’ van Nam June Paik en ‘Bodhi Obfuscatus (Space-Baby)’ van Michael Joo, beiden Amerikaanse kunstenaars met Koreaanse roots. De twee werkten met een Boeddhabeeld, dat ik hier gelijkstel met het kunstwerk, een bepaald aantal camera‘s, die ik gelijkstel met de blik van het publiek, en een bepaald aantal schermen, die ik gelijkstel met de persoonlijke impressie van het kunstwerk. De installatie ‘Bodhi Obfuscatus (Space-Baby)’ uit 2005 belichaamt het idee van de piste en het beeldhouwwerk: Het Boeddhabeeld is omringd door camera’s die langs verschillende kanten opnames maken. In de ruimte rond het beeld staan schermen opgesteld die als een soort collage de algehele impressie van het sculptuur weergeven. Ieder individu dat de circusvoorstelling bijwoont, staat voor één van die schermen. De installatie ‘TV Buddha’ uit 1972 belichaamt dan weer het denkbeeld van de schouwburg en het tableau: Eén enkele camera registreert het Boeddhabeeld en vervlakt de indruk ervan tot het beeld op een televisiescherm. Voor iedereen die de voorstelling bijwoont gelden dezelfde visuele gewaarwordingen. De fysieke positionering van de camera’s ten opzichte van het Boeddhabeeld, of van het publiek ten opzichte van de voorstelling, betekent meer dan louter een ruimtelijke constellatie van kijkers en spelers. Het bepaalt de beelden die we zien, die we niet zien en die we delen. Het bepaalt wat zichtbaar is en wat verborgen blijft. Het bepaalt een zekere sociale relatie tussen publiek en performers, maar ook tussen het publiek onderling. Onze positie in de ruimte is zo fundamenteel, en daarom zo makkelijk over het hoofd te zien.
