Elke zichzelf respecterende Belgische circusacrobaat is er geweest, plant om ernaartoe te gaan of heeft al eens iemand aangeraakt die iemand kent die er ooit was. De Extreme Convention, een concept ontsproten aan het collectieve brein van de Antwerpse circusschool Ell Circo d’ell Fuego, is dit jaar aan zijn tiende editie toe. Uitgegroeid van een bedenkelijke bijeenkomst van diehards met een voorliefde voor acrobatie op ongeschikte plaatsen, tot een conventie op Europees niveau waar training, internationale ontmoeting en liefde voor de circuskunst tegelijk gecontempleerd kunnen worden. Eens te meer omdat het concept doorheen de jaren uitgebreid werd met het Atlas Festival (voordien Valavond). Voor elk wat wils zeggen we dan. Hoog tijd om een aantal mensen aan het woord te laten met de vraag wat ‘den Extreme’ voor hen betekent.
Vrijwilligers van het eerste uur – Guy en Ronny
“Onze kinderen zaten in Ell Circo en terwijl zij les volgden, bleven wij vaak hangen om mee te helpen in het atelier. Toen er vrijwilligers gezocht werden voor ‘den Extreme’, stonden we op de eerste rij, ook al kostte dat een week van ons verlof. Het is elk jaar opnieuw een ervaring om de kale Waagnatie om te toveren tot een volledig uitgeruste trainingshal en voorstellingsruimte, compleet met slaapplaatsen, douches en keuken. Hard werken, maar vooral heel plezant: we voelen ons thuis tussen het Ell Circo-volk.
De jaren ervaring lonen. De aankleding van de Waagnatie is gegroeid van een paar lampenslingers naar een volledig decoratief geheel, grotendeels zelf gemaakt. En we hebben intussen zoveel meegemaakt dat we bepaalde verrassingen kunnen vermijden. Zo wisten we gedurende enkele edities pas een paar dagen voor het einde van de conventie dat de trainingshal tegen maandagochtend leeg moest zijn voor de Antwerp Jumping. We werkten dan door tot half drie ’s nachts en voelden ’s morgens de hete adem van de paarden al in onze nek. Tegenwoordig loopt dat vlotter en is de hal ’s nachts al volledig opgeruimd.
Onvergetelijk was het voorval van het ‘levende eten’. We vergaten grote potten vol-au-vent, die de kookploeg in de loop van de dag had gemaakt, in de koeling te zetten. Het was zo warm dat onze maaltijd de volgende dag stond te borrelen zonder dat ze op het vuur stond. We hebben toen in allerijl met alle beschikbare mensen de winkels afgeschuimd om ervoor te zorgen dat iedereen toch kon lunchen. Zoiets onverwachts gebeurt elk jaar wel eens, maar het geeft ons des te meer goesting om er ook deze conventie weer te staan.”
De artiest – Yolaine Dooms (Passe-Pieds)
“Mijn ultieme Extreme-ervaring was toen ik zelf op het podium stond van het Atlas Festival. Al voor mijn circusopleiding kwam ik er workshops volgen – ik ken de Extreme Convention al langer dan mijn eigen trapezepartner! – en ik keek toen enorm op naar de ‘echte’ circusartiesten. Als ik hun optredens zag, droomde ik er stiekem van om ooit zelf een nummer te brengen. Er hangt altijd een geweldige sfeer in het publiek en de energie die daaruit voortvloeit, lijkt helemaal tot op het podium te spatten. Er worden telkens een aantal echt straffe artiesten geboekt met acts die meer ballen hebben dan de standaard gladgestreken circusacts. Het leek mij een enorme eer om daar deel van uit te maken. Een aantal jaar later en een diploma van een circushogeschool op zak, stonden we er opeens zelf. Helemaal aaneengeplakt met dikke, zwarte sporttape… Ik ben bijna nooit geblesseerd, maar ik weet blijkbaar de goede momenten uit te kiezen. Normaal word ik niet meer nerveus voor een optreden, maar in de backstage kreeg ik plots een enorme adrenalinerush. Het mag dan wel een enthousiast publiek zijn, het is ook een zaal vol met ‘kenners van het vak’ en mensen die naar mijn mening nog zottere toeren uithalen dan wij. Eenmaal op het podium was ik gelukkig. Ons nummer ging goed en de mensen leken het tof te vinden. Het schreeuwend applaus op het einde was dan ook een enorme opluchting. En ik kon weer een dingetje afvinken van mijn geheime verlanglijst.”

“Sinds een paar jaar gaan we met een hele groep van Circolito naar de Extreme Convention. We dachten eerst dat het alleen voor de allerbeste acrobaten bedoeld was, dus we hadden een beetje schrik om te gaan. Maar je hebt er workshops voor iedereen: van beginners tot professionals. Je kan er erg veel leren en het is echt ongelooflijk wat je allemaal ziet. De bascule en de vliegende trapeze blijven toch het meest indrukwekkend, en gewoon het feit dat er zoveel mensen tegelijk zo hard aan het trainen zijn. We hadden het eigenlijk veel kleiner verwacht, huiselijker en meer georganiseerd. Maar je went al snel aan de gezellige drukte in de reusachtige hal. En aan hoe sommige mensen zich kleden… Waarom we dit jaar zeker terug gaan? Omdat het fantastisch is om les te krijgen van en zelfs samen te werken met mensen naar wie je opkijkt. En om samen met honderd andere acrobaten te eten op de kaai in de zon.”
De vleesgeworden Extreme Convention – Jesse Huygh
“Ik heb de conventie vorig jaar voor het eerst sinds haar ontstaan gemist omdat ik op tournee was in Nieuw-Zeeland. Alle vorige edities was ik er: lesgevend, trainend, genietend. Ik stond er ook al een zestal keer op scène. Om me te wreken voor mijn afwezigheid van vorig jaar zal ik deze tiende editie weer optreden met een absolute knaller: een nieuw paalcollectief.
Voor mij valt de conventie dit jaar vlak na een drukke tournee van bijna vijf maanden met het Australische gezelschap Casus, dus het is de ideale manier om thuis te komen en iedereen terug te zien: de Belgische circuswereld, een goede portie internationale vrienden en daarnaast ook familie en niet-circusvrienden die voor het Atlas Festival naar de Waagnatie afzakken. Beelden die direct bij me opkomen als ik aan Extreme Convention denk: een rij etende, lachende mensen in het zonnetje langs de Scheldekaaien. De verwarrende ‘is het nu ochtend of avond?’-momenten als de vroege vogels hun ontbijt eten naast de laatste pintendrinkers. Hoe snel de overvolle Waagnatie al leeg staat nog voor de laatste mensen afscheid hebben genomen.
‘Den Extreme’ is een plaats voor vaste klanten en oude rotten, maar ook voor nieuwe connecties en jonge nieuwsgierige bengels. Een plaats om zowel energie op te doen als een heleboel energie in circus te steken. Het is onze jaarlijkse afspraak om elkaar technisch tot een maximum te inspireren en het niveau op te drijven, samen te eten, knallende voorstellingen te zien en, als je nog wat energie hebt, in de bar te blijven plakken tot een gat in de nacht. Slapen kan na de conventie ook nog.”
Circusmama wordt mastacrobaat – Ilse Van den Heuvel
“De eerste twee conventies bracht ik mijn oudste kinderen – toen acht en elf jaar – naar Antwerpen voor het ‘extremere circuswerk’. Ik was er niet helemaal gerust in. Het waren de enige twee dutskes tussen enkele twintigers in de toen nog niet echt op punt staande infrastructuur. Zij vonden het uiteraard fantastisch. De derde en vierde editie sloeg ik over: de tijd die ik nodig had om als 40+’er de moed bijeen te rapen om zelf mee te doen. Eerst keek ik voorzichtig toe als vrijwilliger bij het Rode Kruis, mijn teen even in het water stekend, het jaar nadien kroop ik dapper in de Chinese mast. Nu kom ik nog steeds, maar als 50+’er hou ik het geen weekend meer vol en beperk ik me tot één dag.
Ik denk niet dat ik de oudste deelnemer ben. Uit mijn herinneringen put ik een Nederlands koppel met zilverwitte haren, duidelijk ouder dan 60, dat aan partneracrobatie deed. Ik vond het machtig hoe ze mij zonder spectaculaire techniek ontroerden en mijn aandacht wisten te trekken tijdens hun training. Gewoon door hun plezier in het samenspel en door de bewegingen die naadloos in elkaar overvloeiden. Misschien zag ik hier de voorloper van de acro-yoga? Dat brengt me op het programmaonderdeel waar ik steeds naar uit kijk: welke side-training zal er dit jaar voor de verrassing zorgen? Voor mij mag de prettig gestoorde catchdemonstratie en -training nog eens herhaald worden!”
De organisatie spreekt – Arno Wauters
“Voor mij is Extreme Convention iets organisatorisch, iets organisch, iets heel menselijk en tegelijkertijd bovenmenselijk. Het is een plek waar circus zichzelf uitdaagt, stimuleert en heruitvindt. In de trainingshal voel je het kloppend hart waar circusartiesten naar op zoek zijn. Ze hebben nood om uitgedaagd te worden en anderen uit te dagen. Nood om met elkaar op de trainingsvloer te staan zonder in dezelfde voorstelling te spelen. De jonge circushonden zien hun helden even hard afzien als zijzelf, en dat werkt ongelooflijk motiverend. Die motivatie vloeit volledig door tot in de puntjes van de tenen van iedereen die aanwezig is op het festival.
Het zijn er ontelbare, maar één herinnering steekt er op een of andere manier bovenuit: de passage van Circolombia, een groep acrobaten uit Cali, Colombia in 2011. Ongelooflijk gespierde, goed getrainde, stoere gasten die verhalen meebrachten waar wij van achterover vielen. Na het festival besloten we met Ell Circo d’ell Fuego om ze nog twee weken bij ons te herbergen, zodat we nog wat voor hen konden zorgen. Ze trainden met massieve gewichten in onze trainingszaal en onze toenmalige leerlingen konden hun ogen niet geloven. De Massen gingen uit hun dak en wilden voor geen meter wijken van die Colombiaanse acrobaten. Evenals enkele jongere dames van Ell Circo, die hadden het ook stevig te pakken. Ze werden prompt uitgenodigd op barbecues, kinesisten werden opgetrommeld om hun blessures te checken. Maar wat we niet snapten was waarom die kolossen niet zoveel aten. We schotelden ze zelfgemaakte lasagne van Daisy voor, canard à l’orange van Linde, maar niets sloeg echt aan. Tot we ontdekten dat kip het geheim was: dat verslonden ze zonder blikken of blozen. Vanaf dan werd er elke avond, middag en ochtend gebraden kip opgetrommeld in plaats van de zoveelste kinesist.”
De Turnclub – Stefaan Van der Veken (Nova Keurturnen vzw)
“Heerlijk een weekendje gekke toeren uithalen, dachten we die eerste keer. Onze auto stopte voor de gigantische loods. Gepakt en gezakt stapten we met acht kinderen tussen acht en achttien jaar de hal in. Eerste indruk: we vonden het erg vuil. Maar het onthaal was geweldig en door de inrichting waanden we ons in een grote circustent. Slapen moesten we doen in ‘het kasteel’, een pand zonder ramen of volwaardig dak. Onze kids, uitgedost in hun clubmaillot, vielen helemaal uit de toon in het voor ons vreemd aanvoelende circuswereldje. Maar dat eerste weekend heeft onze harten veroverd en we zijn verslaafd geraakt aan het extreme virus. Nu, tien jaar later, zijn onze kinderen nog steeds dolgelukkig als het eerste briefje voor Extreme Convention verschijnt. Spontaan vallen de meisjes dan op hun knieën en maken het ‘extreme-gebaar’ zoals we dat van Bert Beyens leerden. Keer op keer geraken we in een soort trance op dit weekend. Het is fantastisch om tijdens de workshops les te krijgen van ‘wereldsterren’: de sterren die je de avond ervoor gezien hebt op het Atlas Festival, al dan niet naakt. Want bijna elk jaar is er wel een streepje naakt te zien en dan kunnen we niet snel genoeg zijn om de ogen van onze jongste deelnemers te bedekken.”
Van jonge hond tot circusbeer – Tijs Bastiaens
“Mijn eerste keer Extreme was de vierde editie. Ik was twaalf jaar en ik kende niemand anders die ernaartoe ging. Mijn ouders zetten me er op vrijdagavond af met de belofte om me zondagmiddag weer op te halen. Ik wist niet wat te verwachten, stond daar helemaal alleen. En dan stapte ik door dat kleine deurtje naar de grote trainingshal vol matten, trampolines, trapezes, bascules en ik kon alleen maar denken ‘wauw dit is geweldig’. Sindsdien ben ik elk jaar teruggegaan en vorig jaar mocht ik zelfs helpen bij de workshop vliegende trapeze.
De conventie is voor mij een moment om inspiratie op te doen, zowel technisch als artistiek. De optredens die je er te zien krijgt, blijven lang nazinderen en geven je een extra boost om de volgende ochtend weer te gaan trainen. Het is volgens mij onmogelijk om er naar binnen te lopen en terug buiten te komen zonder iets geleerd te hebben. Extreme Convention is een van de redenen waarom ik een paar jaar geleden besloot om volledig voor circus te gaan. Ik ben voluit acro beginnen trainen, onder meer in Cirkus in Beweging en op de Circushumaniora, en natuurlijk elk jaar op Extreme. Ik ontmoette er trouwens Eva Schubach, die nu – zes jaar later – mijn docente duotrapeze is in Codarts, de Rotterdamse circushogeschool. Ik droom er uiteraard van om zelf ooit op het Atlas Festival te kunnen optreden. Arno, je mag mij altijd bellen!”
