De re-integratie van gedetineerden is een complex en veelkoppig beest. De Leuvense hulpgevangenis startte twee jaar geleden met een wekelijkse circusles. Daar leren mannen in voorhechtenis elkaar te dragen en vertrouwen in piramides, en jongleren gevangenen ijverig hun stress weg.
BIEP. Het rode lampje op de brug van de metaaldetector knipt aan. Een bewaker wipt recht uit haar stoel. Ze kijkt naar haar scherm en gebaart met haar wijsvinger naar Rika’s bovenlichaam. “Ai, weeral mijn bh?” lacht Rika Taeymans (58). “Die biept echt elke keer.” Sinds 2013 bouwt circusatelier Cirkus in Beweging een wekelijkse circusles uit in de Leuvense hulpgevangenis. Het initiatief kwam van De Rode Antraciet, een vzw die groepslessen sport en cultuur organiseert in alle Vlaamse en Brusselse gevangenissen. Ine Melis – sportfunctionaris in Leuven Hulp – legt uit: “Voor ons maakt elke mens deel uit van de samenleving, ook gedetineerden. Via onze cursussen hopen we een maximale interactie op te zetten tussen gevangenen en de buitenwereld. Onze activiteiten brengen zuurstof van buiten naar binnen en verhalen uit de gevangenis naar buiten. En gedetineerden krijgen de kans om zich als mens te engageren, ontplooien en sociaal te verbinden.” Enter: Rika Taeymans. Oprichter van Cirkus in Beweging en al dertig jaar actief als circusdocent. Iedere vrijdag is zij een energieke en kleurrijke stoorzender binnen de voorspelbare en begrensde dagbesteding in Leuven Hulp. Als de beugels van haar bh nu ook nog even meewillen tenminste.
Het circus mag beginnen
De bh wordt onschadelijk bevonden en Taeymans’ fietstas rolt door de scanner, volgepropt met jongleerballen, kegels en ringen. Vandaag op de planning: een korte opwarming, wat piramides en veel jongleren. Een vijftal stalen deuren worden open gezoemd. Evenveel bewakers wordt de hand geschud. Dan zijn we binnen. Je voelt het meteen. Je hoort het, je ruikt het. Hier stopt de vrijheid. Op de oude harde tegelvloeren galmt elk geluid na. Een zweem van mannenzweet en staal zweeft door de lucht. Het gebrek aan daglicht drukt op het gemoed, langer dan nodig wil je hier niet zijn. “Hier moeten we even wachten,” wijst Taeymans. “Het appèl is nog bezig.” Ze knikt naar een bewakingsassistent die streepjes turvend op een A4 langs de cellen loopt.
De telling is compleet, een nieuwe ploeg cipiers staat op post. De intercom kraakt. ‘LOSSEN: CIRCUS.’ Taeymans glimlacht. “Ja, de eerste keer dat je dat hoort, klinkt het net alsof er een troep paarden of zo gelost gaat worden, hè.” Een bewaker wandelt met een deelnemerslijst door de gang en laat al wie zich opgaf voor de circusles buiten. Ine: “Het circusaanbod had wat tijd nodig om zich te zetten. Ook bij de cipiers. Met overdreven articulatie riep een van hen steevast ‘Het circus mag beginnen!’ door de intercom. Je kunt je inbeelden dat de meeste volwassen mannen niet staan te springen om zo’n oproep te beantwoorden.” Keerpunt was een Europees circusproject afgelopen zomer. Een week lang werkten twaalf buitenlandse circusartiesten aan een voorstelling met twaalf gevangenen. Melis: “Dat was fantastisch. Het publiek kon amper zien wie wie was. En het respect voor circus is nadien enorm gestegen, ook bij de cipiers.”
Druppelsgewijs komen vijf deelnemers aangeslenterd. “Waar is Nordin?” vraagt Taeymans. Hij blijkt overgeplaatst. Ook twee andere vaste klanten ontbreken, ze hebben toelating gekregen om te beginnen werken. Melis: “Aan een laag loon kunnen gevangenen meedraaien in de keuken, de wasserette of praktisch uitvoerend werk doen voor een externe firma. Met de kleine vergoeding die ze daarvoor krijgen kunnen ze zichzelf trakteren op extraatjes als cola, sigaretten, telefoontjes of extra televisiekanalen.”
Alarmknop
De deur van het lokaal valt dicht, Taeymans staat er nu alleen voor met haar vijf cursisten. Bewaking is niet voorzien, camera’s hangen er voorlopig niet. Enkel een rode alarmknop. Taeymans: “Of dat niet onveilig voelt? Maar nee gij. Wij amuseren ons te pletter. Vorige week misten we een kleinere persoon als top van een piramide. Een van de deelnemers – echt een beer van een vent – heeft mij toen maar de lucht in gezwierd. Zo van WOEPS! We hebben gegierd van het lachen. Ik ben blij dat dan niemand zit mee te volgen op een scherm. Ik zou me een beetje bekeken voelen.”
Het moet gezegd: bedreigend komt het vijftal niet over. De oudste is vierenvijftig, de jongste achtentwintig. Aan de meeste handen blinkt een trouwring. Het helpt ook dat ze eigen kledij dragen. Gom je de omgeving weg, dan zie je een goedlachs vaderfiguur met bierbuik en hoog opgetrokken sokken. Een ongeschoren badgast in short op slippers. Een computertechneut die amper daglicht ziet. En een hippe twintiger in witte Birckenstock-sandalen. Slechts één grijze gevangenisbroek verraadt waar we zijn. Opgelapte scheur op het zitvlak incluis. Bogdan schudt Taeymans de hand. “Hoe is het?” vraagt ze. Met een emotioneel handgebaar wuift hij de vraag weg en staart stuurs naar de grond. Vier maanden zit hij hier nu, en hij gokt nog minstens twee te moeten blijven. Het zit hem vandaag hoog. Zijn vrouw beweert geld opgestuurd te hebben, maar het komt maar niet toe.
Tot tien tellen
Start van de les: samen stretchen. Per oefening laat Taeymans iemand in zijn eigen taal tot tien tellen. Passeren de revue: Chinees, Macedonisch, Arabisch en Surinaams. Tussendoor wordt luidruchtig gekreund. Oei. Amai, mijn rug. De helft is nog stijf van de crossfit van gisteren. Er wordt ontspannen gelachen. Via laagdrempelige contactspelletjes – rug aan rug – wordt opgebouwd naar piramides per drie.
Of Taeymans bewust dingen mijdt in haar lessen, vroeg ik haar vooraf. “Zo weinig mogelijk. Bij acrobatie mag je zo niet denken, dan kun je niks meer doen. Er komt altijd wel wat duwen en trekken bij kijken en je kunt bijna elke oefening als een seksueel standje opvatten. Ik trek mij daarom gewoon van niks iets aan.” Wel probeert ze de lesinhoud af te stemmen op de behoeftes van de groep. “Vorige week vertelde een Egyptische man dat hij heel angstig was en toen heb ik een diepe buikademhaling toegevoegd aan de oefeningen.” Vandaag heeft Admir duidelijk te veel energie, elke vrije seconde gaat hij pompen in een hoekje. Er wordt gegiecheld. Die gaat goed slapen vannacht. Taeymans speelt erop in met een piramide met plankhoudingen. En Admir mag helemaal bovenaan. Voorzichtig en weifelend geeft hij achterwaarts zijn benen aan tot hij enkel op zijn armen steunt. Volle concentratie in de ogen. Trillend bovenlichaam van de inspanning. Ik tel af. En dan komt het: een haast onzichtbare trotse glimlach. Het genot van iets dat voor het eerst lukt, van jezelf te verrassen.
Maar het jongleren, daar komen ze toch vooral voor. “Juggling?” had Jack al enkele malen hintend gevraagd tijdens een dood moment. Met kinderlijk enthousiasme proberen vijf volwassen mannen hun ballen in de lucht te houden. Sommigen aandoenlijk klunzig, anderen al enigszins beheerst. Maar iedereen met kin omhoog en mond open. Lachend wordt achter vallende ballen gelopen, frustratie komt nergens piepen. Faisel kijkt toe hoe Wang drie ballen in de lucht houdt. “Hola, hij kan het al, zie! Eerste keer?” Nee. “In China leert iedereen jongleren op school, arme kinderen met talent worden op internaat gestuurd en krijgen de kans circusartiest te worden.” Ook bij Jack lukt het aardig. Als drummer is hij gewend handen en hoofd te laten samenwerken. Geduldig oefent hij met zijn partner om arm in arm ‘siamees’ te jongleren.
Op de foto met een tijger
De hoop is dat de deelname aan dit soort activiteiten de re-integratie van gedetineerden in de maatschappij ten goede komt. Maar Ine Melis wil voorzichtig blijven. “Veel overheden en organisaties willen sport maar al te graag als middel gebruiken om grootse zaken te realiseren. Maar harde bewijzen zijn hier helaas nog niet voor. We moeten opletten dat we er niet te veel bullshit rond verkopen. En er zijn ontelbare factoren die dit proces beïnvloeden. Bestaat een uurtje sport louter uit wat gewichtheffen? Of heeft de les een opbouw en krijgen de mannen verantwoordelijkheid in de organisatie?” Meedoen aan een activiteit is geen garantie dat een gedetineerde achteraf gemakkelijker een job vindt. “Daarvoor moet je veel specifieker kunnen werken en ook een duidelijker zicht krijgen op de noden van elke gedetineerde. Heeft iemand een gebrek aan zelfvertrouwen? Of net te veel? Voor mij mag sport in eerste instantie een plek van ontlading zijn. Een insteek om je gedachten eens te kunnen verzetten. En hopelijk is het in het beste geval meer.”
Wat halen de deelnemers er zelf uit? Ik vraag het hen de laatste vijf minuten. “It just makes me smile,” glimlacht Fahic. Ook Bogdan moest niet lang nadenken. “Ik zeg op alles ja. En circus klonk meteen positief. Met mijn moeder ging ik als kleine jongen graag naar het circus, ik heb nog een foto met een tijger.” Meer dan het overige groepsaanbod biedt circus duidelijk de mogelijkheid eens goed te lachen. Maar Wang vond het aanbod aanvankelijk vreemd. “What’s the point, dacht ik. Even de clown uithangen in een gevangenis? Ondertussen begrijp ik dat je circus als een sport kunt opvatten. En in China geloven we dat fysieke inspanningen ideaal zijn om je mentaal te ontladen. Net zoals zingen kan helpen bij stress.” Ja, knikt Jack. “Een uur geleden lag ik nog op en top gestresseerd in mijn cel. Nu voel ik me goed. Dit luchtte op.” Het meeste geniet hij ervan om te merken dat hij elke week vooruitgang boekt. “Ik kan waarschijnlijk nog maar vijf procent van wat mogelijk is met jongleerballen. Dat is een leuke gedachte.” Of ze er iets van mee zullen nemen na hun hechtenis? Toch wel. Vooral de vaders in de groep hebben hier al over gefantaseerd. De lessen bieden hen de kans iets positiefs mee naar huis te nemen. Bogdan: “Ik kijk er enorm naar uit mijn kunstjes te kunnen tonen aan mijn dochtertje in Slovenië en voor haar de clown uit te hangen.” Ook Jack verheugt zich daar op, in Nederland wachten een pasgeboren baby en een vijfjarige kleuter op hem. “Maar ik ben ook dirigent van een fanfare van twintig jonge gasten. En het lijkt me wel tof om hen te leren jongleren, bijvoorbeeld met hun drumstokken. Zo kunnen we iets toevoegen aan onze show.” Het meest gebeten is Wang: “Als het me lukt om in de regio van Leuven een job te vinden, wil ik me graag inschrijven voor een avondles bij Cirkus in Beweging.” De tijd zit er bijna op en de groep zit nog met vragen. “Rika, kunnen we ook eens leren goochelen?” polst Wang. Faisel heeft dan weer een filmpje gezien van iemand die met kettingzagen jongleerde. En via via kent hij iemand die het met acht kegels kan. “Kegels? Ben je zeker dat het geen balletjes waren?” checkt Taeymans. “Met acht kegels is echt heel moeilijk.” “Nee nee! Kegels, echt waar!”
Toon eens een kunstje, Johnny
Wie op zijn cel verder wil oefenen, kan in de gevangenisbibliotheek ballen uitlenen. Daarvoor moet je bij Johnny zijn. Als hij niet op zijn cel zit, werkt hij achter de uitleenbalie. De stijf opstaande kraag van zijn lichtblauwe polo en getatoeëerde onderarmen doen een brok testosteron vermoeden. Maar hij lacht bedeesd. Volgens cipier Jimmy is hij een natuurtalent met de ballen. “Allez, toont eens een kunstje, Johnny.” Zonder morren vist Johnny drie ballen onder een stapel papieren vandaan en houdt ze met gemak in de lucht. “Ziet eens, hij kan dat toch goed hè. En hij heeft nog maar vier uur les gehad. Blijven oefenen, hè man.” “Ja,” mompelt Johnny droog. “Het is niet dat ik iets anders te doen heb.” Aan de keuze van jongleerballen ging wel wat research vooraf. Ine: “Het is evident dat zaken als een springtouw niet mee mogen naar de cellen. En we willen ook vermijden dat objecten open gepeuterd kunnen worden. Wij zijn bezig met hulp en dienstverlening aan gedetineerden, justitie nog steeds met veiligheid. Voor zo’n zaken hebben we steeds goedkeuring nodig van directie. Zij geven aan wat kan en wat niet.”
Een uurtje stress wegnemen
Met brede glimlach wandelt Taeymans weer alle deuren door en trekt haar jas uit de locker. “Ik kan er moeilijk mijn vinger op leggen, maar ik geniet ongelofelijk hard van deze lessen. Ik wandel telkens goedgezind buiten. Ik amuseer me hier echt. Misschien omdat ik het gevoel heb dat ze er echt iets aan hebben. Omdat ik erin slaag om die mannen te doen lachen.” Of dan nooit door haar hoofd spookt wat haar studenten hier bracht? “Neen. Ik weet het van niemand en ik hoef het niet te weten. Je mag daar niet aan denken. Ik ben hun sociale werker niet. Ik behandel hen als mensen, niet als gevangenen, en dat voelen ze. Ik help hen om even hun omgeving te vergeten, probeer gewoon een positieve ervaring te bieden aan mannen die echt in een stresserende situatie zitten. Een uurtje stress wegnemen, op zich is dat niks speciaal.”
Liever een uurtje les in een gevangenis dan op een bedrijfsfeest? “O ja. Zonder enige twijfel. Het is fijn om met zoveel verschillende personen in contact te komen. Ooit kwam een oudere man die altijd boer was geweest. Het duurde echt frustrerend lang eer hij het een beetje onder de knie had, maar hij bleef komen en hield vol. Dat is mooi.” En soms lukt het om iemand echt te prikkelen. “Vorig jaar had ik een architect in de les. Ik heb hem wat uitleg gegeven over side swap patronen in jongleren en de link getrokken naar wiskunde en daar is hij zelf veel over gaan opzoeken.”
Af en toe krijgt Taeymans de kans gedetineerden en hun kinderen samen piramides aan te leren tijdens het bezoekuur. “Die les vindt dan plaats in het midden van een drukke bezoekerszaal. Vlak voor het enige drankautomaat. Helemaal geen simpele omstandigheden. De eerste keer zat een oudere cipier in stilte vanaf zijn stoel bij de deur te kijken. ‘Dat heb ik nu nog nooit gezien,’ zei hij achteraf. ‘In al mijn jaren hier. Zo iets schoons.’” Taeymans krijgt tranen in de ogen als ze het vertelt. “Weet je? Misschien is dat nog het moeilijkste aan heel het verhaal, het feit dat je het met bijna niemand kan delen. Je kunt er wel over vertellen, maar het is toch moeilijk te vatten. Je moet erbij zijn om te zien hoe mooi het is.”
