Sébastien Wojdan maakt deel uit van het losse Bretoense collectief Galapiat Cirque, wiens signatuur bestaat uit een mix van traditioneel circus en een eigenzinnige selectie elementen uit de performancekunst van de jaren 60 en 70. Voorstellingen als ‘Risque Zéro’ (2008), het haarhang-duo ‘Capilotractées’ (2014) en ‘Marathon’ (2013) thematiseren de limieten van de fysieke uithouding en introduceren de tijd als variabele waarmee het circuslichaam zich meet. Ook Galapiats pogingen om kunst en leven te vervlechten doen denken aan de performancekunst. Tegelijk staat Galapiat voor hardcore circustechniek, maar dan wel ontdaan van de glitter en pailletten die we associëren met het traditionele circus pur sang.
Compagnie Galapiat: een circus-collectief
Wojdan, nu 35, was in 2008 één van de zes pas afgestudeerde artiesten die samen onder de naam Compagnie Galapiat de fel gesmaakte tentvoorstelling ‘Risque Zéro’ maakten. Hoe dat collectieve creatieproces in zijn werk ging? Wojdan: “Met ‘Risque Zéro’ wilden we samen een voorstelling schrijven, maar na een jaar creatie konden we elkaar niet meer uitstaan. Iedereen wilde alles doen en dat is natuurlijk heel moeilijk. Uiteindelijk hebben we er een regisseur (Gilles Cailloux van Attention Fragile, n.v.d.r.) bijgehaald die ons wat gekalmeerd heeft. Hij verdeelde de rollen opnieuw. En dat bleef zowel de sterkte als de zwakte van ‘Risque Zéro’: het waren zeven voorstellingen in één.” Hij besluit: “Toch zijn we er in geslaagd om samen een verhaal te schrijven.”
Artiesten van bij ons ‘maken’ voorstellingen, terwijl Franse circusgezelschappen voorstellingen ‘schrijven’. Dat laatste is ongetwijfeld een erfenis van de Franse theatrale traditie, die nauw samenhangt met het werk van grote toneelschrijvers als Molière en Racine. Tot op vandaag laten hun opvattingen over theater sporen na in de (Franse) podiumkunsten. Wat ‘schrijven’ betekent in de context van circuscreatie, hoor ik u denken. Wojdan benoemt het schrijfproces van ‘Risque Zéro’ als een heel empirische aangelegenheid: “Wij hadden bijna zeven jaar gedeelde praktijk uit onze opleiding (Centre National des Arts du Cirque in Frankrijk, n.v.d.r.). Gedurende die tijd hadden we veel materiaal gegenereerd dat diende als beginpunt. Dat is ook de reden waarom ‘Risque Zéro’ lijkt op een afstudeervoorstelling, elk kreeg zijn of haar solomoment. En daarnaast: risico als centrale thematiek, onze respectievelijke technieken en de realiteit van een groep mensen. De voorstelling was eigenlijk een scenische vertaling van onze dagelijkse dynamieken en verhoudingen.” Zo werd de voorstelling tegelijk een weerspiegeling als het verlengde van hun dagelijkse collectieve realiteit.
Going solo
Na tien jaar collectief circusleven met de full package van tent, woon- en vrachtwagens, werd de creatie van ‘Marathon’ een solo-avontuur. Bovendien werd het werkproces gevoed door jaren van jongleerpraktijk, eveneens alleen. “In het leven zijn we zowel solitair als samen met anderen. Ik hou van beide. Maar de creatie van ‘Marathon’ was ongelofelijk. Ik voelde me heel vrij. Daar waar je in een collectief steeds compromissen maakt, kun je veel radicaler zijn wanneer je alleen werkt. Ik kan het moeilijk benoemen, maar ‘Marathon’ is een poging om iets heel persoonlijks van vroeger te verzorgen of te verteren. Sommige mensen voelen dat. Voor mij was het in ieder geval een zoektocht naar mijn kleine duiveltjes, naar hoe ik hen naar buiten kon laten komen en transformeren.”
Ook hier verschoof er dus iets: daar waar ‘Risque Zéro’ een lofzang was op de uitzonderlijke fysieke en circustechnische capaciteiten van de zes performers, werd ‘Marathon’ een eenzame uitputtingsslag in duizelingwekkend tempo én een poging om een persoonlijke zoektocht te vertalen naar de piste. Wojdan noemt het zelf “een soort hyperactiviteit: alsof je je hoofd onder water steekt gedurende een uur en twintig minuten om dan plots boven te komen en adem te halen.” Marathons veelheid aan circustechnieken (messenwerpen, jongleren, koordlopen en objectmanipulatie) en de klassieke nummerstructuur van het kunstje die daaruit voortvloeit, lijken op het eerste gezicht moeilijk verzoenbaar met een zoektocht naar persoonlijke demonen.
Falen, herhalen
Of misschien zijn techniek en het bijhorende mensbeeld van de superman niet per se tegenstrijdig aan de poging om de mens achter het kunstje zichtbaar te maken? Niet volgens Wojdan: “Wanneer ik iets technisch doe op scène, brengt me dat op een hyperfragiele plek. Een plek die ik interessant vind. In ‘Marathon’ zijn er ongeveer honderd trucjes die stuk voor stuk verkeerd kunnen gaan. Ik kan dus honderd keer falen. Honderd keer onhandig zijn. Ook al probeer ik om steeds te slagen in wat ik doe.” Die focus op de spanning tussen falen en slagen is ook relevant in de bredere context van “een maatschappij waarin we moeten slagen. ‘Marathon’ vertelt eigenlijk net het omgekeerde: het is niet omdat iets niet lukt dat je niet vooruit gaat.” Zowel het creatieproces als de uiteindelijke voorstelling waren voor hem pogingen “om vooruit te komen.” Beiden maken deel uit van een proces waarin een opgroeiende jongen “steeds dezelfde gebaren en routines herhaalt met verschillende stukken speelgoed of objecten, in de hoop zo tot iets nieuws te komen.” Het is doorheen die herhaling van steeds dezelfde handelingen dat de dingen én het jongetje gestaag veranderen. De piste van Marathon is met andere woorden het strijdveld van een pogende mens. Of nog: “Voor ons is circus een arena waarin wij de gladiatoren zijn.”
Maar wat betekent het om als soloartiest of als collectief de focus te leggen op het menselijke kunnen? “Wanneer je als circusartiest ergens in slaagt, wanneer het kunstje lukt, dan krijg je een goed gevoel over jezelf. Het bevestigt je in je eigenwaarde. Het valoriseert je. Voor de artiest is kunst in de eerste plaats een vorm van therapie. Circus ontdekken deed mij alleszins deugd. Veel mensen doen of maken circus om een leegte in zichzelf te vullen, denk ik.” Paradoxaal genoeg is de keuze voor een steeds snellere opeenvolging van (schijnbaar) gevaarlijke circusacts voor hem ook een manier om dichter bij diezelfde leegte en bij zichzelf te komen: “Soms ben ik triest en kan ik dat niet verbergen wanneer ik op scène sta. Ik zou me graag bevrijden van die beperking. Ik zou graag niet moeten nadenken wanneer ik speel en gewoon in de actie ‘zijn’. Het hoge tempo van ‘Marathon’ zorgt ervoor dat ik tegen mezelf kan zeggen: doe gewoon wat je moet doen, speel niets. Gooi gewoon je mes en doe verder, steeds sneller.”
Autobiografie: praktijk of performance?
Een dergelijke vloeibaarheid van de grenzen tussen praktijk en performance is een vaker terugkerend fenomeen in de hedendaagse circuscreatie. Omdat de meeste ‘circusauteurs’ zelf circusartiesten zijn, worden de persoonlijke waarde en het eigen plezier die worden ontleend aan het beoefenen van circustechniek vaak als artistieke criteria gehanteerd in het maakproces van een voorstelling. Het is een interessante spanning die de laatste jaren onder andere zorgde voor een soort ‘autobiographical turn’ in de hedendaagse circuscreatie, een tendens waar ‘Marathon’ duidelijk schatplichtig aan is. Tegelijk zorgt diezelfde spanning ervoor dat de dramaturgie van de performer (wat de artiest ervaart in deze of gene scène en wat dat voor hem/haar betekent) nog al eens verward wordt met de dramaturgie van een voorstelling (hoe materiaal wordt georganiseerd zodat die ervaring en/of betekenis leesbaar worden voor een toeschouwer). Ook ‘Marathon’ vertoont symptomen van die verwarring. Dat wordt het duidelijkst in de schijnbaar willekeurige, exponentiële opeenvolging van allerhande circustechnieken, waarvan het plezier in de uitvoering (in principe) enkel door de performer zelf ervaren wordt. De toeschouwer ervaart enkel een spel met gevaar en virtuositeit. En dan rijst natuurlijk de vraag of circustechniek an sich iets anders kan communiceren dan die virtuositeit of dan (het meer of minder verwijderd zijn van) de traditie van het circus zelf.
Ook Wojdan vraagt zich na drie jaar toeren met ‘Marathon’ af wat circus anders kan zijn dan het centraal stellen van circustechniek. “Waar je voor staat heeft veel te maken met de omgeving waarin je je bevindt. Toen ik net afstudeerde van de circusschool vond ik het belangrijk om wat ik deed te verdedigen als circus. En, bij uitbreiding, om circus te verdedigen als kunst. Vandaag weet ik niet zo zeker of ik het daar nog over wil hebben. Ik jongleer ook niet meer. Nu stel ik me eerder de vraag wat ik wil vertellen, in plaats van te denken vanuit de uiteindelijke vorm die het aanneemt.” ‘Marathon’ is het verhaal van wat was, of van wat geweest is: zowel het relaas van een persoonlijk verleden als een artistiek groeiproces. “Nu ben ik toe aan de volgende stap. Het is nog niet officieel, maar ik wil graag ‘Marathon 2’ maken: van het heden naar de toekomst en het fantasma.” Wij zijn alvast benieuwd naar het vervolg.
