Hoe verandert het acrobaat zijn mijn kijk op het circus?
De laatste jaren realiseer ik me meer en meer dat ik niet langer naar circus kijk zoals vijf jaar geleden. Zelfs morgen kijk ik misschien anders dan vandaag. Het valt niet te ontkennen dat ik steeds meer betrokken raak bij het circusveld. Maar dit zou toch niet moeten betekenen dat ik minder enthousiast ben dan vijf jaar geleden? Of is dat een evidente evolutie die geldt voor iedere professionele activiteit? Circus is natuurlijk geen dagdagelijks beroep; je bent geen artiest from 9 to 5, je staat ermee op en je gaat er ook mee slapen. Zou ik als acrobaat afstand moeten nemen van mijn kennis als ik naar een voorstelling kijk? Of moet ik die kennis gebruiken om het circusveld te helpen evolueren? Op een circushogeschool wordt nochtans niet zozeer de nadruk gelegd op het ontwikkelen van een artistieke visie maar eerder op de techniek. Dit zorgt voor een soort scheiding in een voorstelling tussen het technische en het artistieke aspect. Elke keer opnieuw wordt er de vraag gesteld: welke trucs wil ik laten zien en hoe verbind ik die op een logische manier? De logische manier wordt vaak vervangen door een leuke overgang tussen twee trucs. Dit zorgt ervoor dat de artiesten een geloofwaardigheid verliezen. Als iets op het podium niet geloofwaardig is, waarom zou ik dan kijken? Het is een tendens die ik meer en meer waarneem op het podium, ligt dat aan mij of aan de positie waarin het circus zich bevindt?
Meer kennis = minder genot?
Ik ben een acrobaat. Dat betekent niet dat ik niets weet van andere circusdiscplines, integendeel. De kennis die je verwerft als acrobaat kan vaak toegepast worden op andere circusdiscplines, puur technisch gezien dan. Ik leer het verschil tussen een geflexte en gepointe voet, een open of gesloten schouder, mooie lijnen en kromme lijnen etc. Dit zijn allemaal puur technische termen waarmee elke acrobaat te kampen krijgt. Het doel van al deze termen is om de perfecte techniek te krijgen. Natuurlijk verliest iedereen. In een circushogeschool word je al snel geconfronteerd met alles wat er mis is aan je lichaam. Niemand is compleet symmetrisch, maar dat betekent niet dat je niet kan proberen het wel te zijn. De perfecte circusartiest zou eigenlijk zo sterk moeten zijn als De Hulk en zo lenig als een rekker in combinatie met een algemene kennis over… alles. Naast het ontwikkelen van kennis over circus, moet er ook een artistieke visie ontstaan. Liefst zo snel mogelijk zodat je na de school direct aan de slag kan als afgewerkte circusartiest. Goeie grap. Het ontwikkelen van een visie vergt tijd. En die tijd krijgen we tegenwoordig niet. Het beste dat je kan doen is zoveel mogelijk voorstellingen bekijken en dan proberen om zelfs iets te maken. Met je kennis als acrobaat kijk je natuurlijk op een heel andere manier naar een voorstelling. Als er vanuit de scholen zo hard de nadruk wordt gelegd op de techniek, dan heb je al snel de neiging om die ook te zoeken in een voorstelling. Waarop je zelf iets maakt met diezelfde focus op techniek. Waaruit dan allemaal gelijkaardige voorstellingen ontstaan. Hierop zou je kunnen zeggen: kijk gewoon voorbij de techniek en ga op zoek naar het artistieke. Makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan. Een stuntelige uitvoering van een truc gaat niet onopgemerkt voorbij aan het acrobatenoog. Je oordeelt al makkelijk over een voorstelling als er iemand in het begin op zijn bek gaat.
Hoge verwachtingen
Het is makklijk om de acrobaat volledig af te rekenen op zijn gebrek aan visie. Maar tegenwoordig liggen de verwachtingen hoog. Zowel onder de acrobaten als onder het publiek. Een student wordt al makkelijk beoordeeld door de community puur op herkomst. Of dat discriminerend gedrag is laat ik even in het midden. Maar als je een student van de circushogeschool van Montréal naast iemand van Lido zou zetten, dan zitten daar al bepaalde oordelen aan verbonden. Van Montréalstuden zou je kunnen verwachten dat ze een degelijk technisch niveau hebben maar enige diepe betekenis ontberen, van Lidostudenten het omgekeerde. Ligt dit aan het imago of aan de aanpak van de school? Een mix van beide zou ik zeggen. Het valt niet te ontkennen dat sommige scholen de nadruk leggen op de techniek, andere dan weer op diepgang. Om alle studenten op basis hiervan een stempel te geven, is verre van eerlijk. Iedereen zou los van zijn of haar herkomst de kans moeten krijgen om zichzelf te ontwikkelen. Werkpunt voor de community!
Een groot verschil tussen circus en sport is het ontbreken van competitie. In de sport streef je ernaar om de beste te zijn, in het circus wil je iets communiceren. In mijn ogen is dit niet helemaal waar. Ondanks het feit dat er geen medailles worden uitgereikt voor de beste artiest – afgezien van de grote-prijzenfestivals die dat wel doen – is er druk op de student om de ‘beste’ te worden. Het woord ‘beste’ is vrij nietszeggend. Maar als het over de techniek gaat dan kan elke student beamen dat er een zekere druk aanwezig is. Ook al wordt het vaak niet expliciet gezegd, iedereen weet wel van elkaar wat hun niveau is. Dit kan leiden tot een soort verheffing van de elite. Bij degenen met minder technische capaciteit heerst een minderwaardigheidsgevoel. Die druk kan zeker ook een positief effect hebben; sommige mensen hebben deze stimulans nodig om echt te werken. Maar als je naar een voorstelling gaat kijken en de artiesten doen dingen die jij niet kan, dan ben je al snel jaloers in plaats van verwonderd. Het gebeurt ook vaak dat ik de zin hoor: ‘De voorstelling was misschien niet zo goed, maar wow, wat een tricks!’ Was dit dan een goeie voorstelling omdat ze technisch goed was, of was ze eigenlijk slecht maar heb je wel respect voor wat de artiesten kunnen? De meningen hierover zijn verdeeld. Sommigen zoeken alleen het technische in het circus, anderen proberen het als kunstvorm te onderscheiden.
Circuskritiek
Het is een intressante periode om in het circusveld te staan. Alle aspecten van het circus worden in vraag gesteld, terwijl de populariteit toeneemt. Tegenwoordig kan je als artiest vele richtingen uitgaan en je voorstelling toch onder de term circus de wereld insturen. Dit komt onder andere doordat de term circus nog vaag is en veranderlijk. Circus is niet meer wat het 30 jaar geleden was en over 10 jaar zal het circus weer een andere definitie vereisen. Dit is een natuurlijk verschijnsel. Iedereen en alles zoekt elkaar op en vermengt zich. Dit geeft de artiest enkel meer vrijheid om zijn ding te doen. Bij deze extra vrijheid komen wel aan aantal dingen kijken. Je moet duidelijk weten waar je naartoe wilt en hoe je dat gaat doen. Dit plan wordt extra toegelicht in het dossier dat je indient om subsidies aan te vragen. Je moet weten waar je moet zijn om de juiste mensen te ontmoeten. Een goeie praatjesmaker komt er soms beter vanaf dan een echte artiest. Een zekere kennis over licht, muziek, scenografie, kostuums, websites bouwen en je eigen businesskaartjes ontwerpen, kan altijd handig zijn. Er komt dus van alles bij kijken als je iets wil maken en dat naar buiten wil brengen. Gelukkig bestaan er ook instellingen zoals het Circuscentrum in Vlaanderen, die graag een handje helpen om de artiesten op gang te zetten. Soms is het wel goed om te weten dat je er niet helemaal alleen voor staat. Ook het uitnodigen van een outside eye is iets wat steeds vaker gebeurt. Deze persoon kan een dramaturg, choreograaf of gewoon je oma of opa zijn. Iedereen heeft wel iets te zeggen over wat je doet, positief of negatief. Het is dus belangrijk voor mij als acrobaat om kritisch tegenover mijn eigen, maar ook tegenover het werk van anderen te staan. Soms is het moeilijk om dit te vergeten en gewoon achterover te leunen en te genieten. Maar helaas, het opmerken van een dramaturgische boog die scheef gaat, of het ene cliché na het andere beoordelen op originaliteit, gebeurt al snel.
Terug naar de bron
Af en toe is het nodig om mijzelf eraan te herinneren waarom ik circus doe/maak. Ik was 3 jaar toen ik begon met circus. Maar het zou nog 13 jaar duren vooraleer ik er aan dacht om er iets serieus mee te gaan doen. Voor mij is het altijd al heel normaal geweest om te kunnen jongleren, maar hoe meer ik in contact kwam met mensen die dat niet konden, hoe leuker het werd. Toen duidelijk werd dat ik potentieel had om verder te gaan, klikte er iets in mijn hoofd. Het circus bracht mij een vrijheid om te doen wat ik moest doen op deze wereld. Sindsdien streef ik er elke dag naar om beter en beter te worden. Voor mij houdt dit niet alleen in dat ik veel moet trainen, maar ook dat ik er veel mee bezig ben in mijn hoofd. Wat wil ik laten zien, hoe wil ik dat doen, met wie ga ik dat doen? Daarbovenop probeer ik zoveel mogelijk input te krijgen door middel van workshops, voorstellingen, video’s, boeken etc. Alles ligt er, je moet het alleen oprapen. Omdat het circus nu echt een fulltime bezigheid is, komen daar ook de zorgen bij kijken die je verwacht van elk beroep. Soms verlies ik mijzelf in wat ik aan het doen ben en moet ik even naar de wereld buiten het circus gaan. Persoonlijk vind ik het belangrijk om bezig te zijn met van alles naast het circus. Om te ontspannen, maar ook om inspiratie op te doen of gewoon om te zien hoe de rest van de wereld leeft. Vaak realiseer ik me pas hoe apart het circuswereldje is wanneer ik op vakantie ben onder het ‘normale’ volk. Uiteindelijk moet ik wel voor die mensen optreden. Als ik nadenk over waarom ik circus doe, dan komt het uiteindelijk neer op mijzelf. Ik doe het puur voor mijzelf. En omdat ik er de kans toe krijg, wil ik graag de rest van de wereld laten zien waarom ik dit doe. En hopelijk zal het ooit begrepen worden. Ik verwacht niet dat iedereen graag naar circus kijkt, maar wel dat men het op z’n minst het erkent voor wat het is. En voor mij is het circus… echt leven.
Nieuwe inzichten?
Na deze ietwat persoonlijke inkijk in het circus kunnen er heel wat conclusies getrokken worden. Niet doen. Ik zie het zoals ik het zie en ik ben er zeker van dat iedereen zijn visie er anders uit ziet. Het zou pas echt interessant zijn als elke persoon die aan het circus verbonden is, zijn gedachten eens zou opschrijven. Dan kunnen we wel enkele conclusies trekken. Misschien dat andere mensen zich herkennen in wat ik heb opgeschreven. In dat geval ben ik daar blij om. Maar net zoals ik circus voor mijzelf doe, is dit essay meer voor mijzelf bedoeld dan voor iemand anders.
