Wanneer is de laatste keer dat u traditioneel nomadisch circus heeft gezien? En wat herinnert u zich daarvan? Momenteel staat Circus Barones in Leuven. Daar kun je kijken naar een jongleernummer, een doeknummer, een goochelnummer, verschillende dierennummers en nog een hoop nummernummers. Handig toch? Je benoemt de nummers naar de techniek die wordt opgevoerd en what you see is what you get. Eén uitzondering: het clownsnummer. Maar ook zij hebben technieken nodig: jonglerie, evenwicht, acrobatie, magie. Laat de technieken weg uit het circus en er rest je nog de popcorn in de pauze. Toch zal een techniek in traditioneel circus niet snel een diepere lading krijgen. Een bal is een bal en daar gooi je mee.
Een koud kunstje?
Nochtans vertellen sommige circusdisciplines op zichzelf een verhaal, waar contemporaine circusmakers zich zeer bewust van zijn. Schrijvers van promotekstjes zijn er eveneens gek op: main-à-main acrobatie zal altijd een ‘spel van aantrekken en afstoten’ verbeelden; koordlopers zeggen iets over de balans in het leven. In de muziek zie je iets gelijkaardigs: een hobo klinkt pastoraal, een klarinet melancholisch. Dan mag je deuntje nog zo vrolijk zijn, aan die intrinsieke kwaliteiten ontsnap je niet.
In de glorietijd van het nomadisch circus, toen den teevee en de dierenrechtenorganisaties nog niet waren uitgevonden, vervulde het bepaalde behoeftes. De spanning van het lichaam in gevaar is iets wat mensen kennelijk altijd al heeft aangetrokken, denk aan het Romeinse circus. Maar ook de verwondering over het tegennatuurlijke speelt een rol: de illusies van de goochelaar, de menselijke piramides, het kunnen vliegen. Ze creëren een realiteit die verder enkel in dromen bestaat. Onze geliefde circustechnieken worden ingezet om een bovenmenselijke perfectie op te roepen. Acrobaten dagen de natuurwetten uit, amazones temmen paarden met een verleidelijke glimlach. Anderzijds belicht circus ook een ‘ondermenselijke’ imperfectie. Clowns eren de kunst van het falen, de freakshows van weleer, de vrouw met de baard.
Circusartiesten kregen in de loop van de twintigste eeuw drie mokerslagen te verwerken. De komst van cinema aan het begin, televisie halfweg en internet aan het einde van de eeuw. Dankzij die uitvindingen is het circus nu zo een rijk en divers landschap geworden. Circus wil meer dan alleen verbazen. Het wil ook kunst zijn, met een betekenis of een boodschap of een emotie. Artiesten zijn acteurs met een verhaallijn, of een schakel in een aparte wereld met een eigen logica.
Maar de technieken blijven. Tuurlijk. En het creatieproces van een hedendaags circusgezelschap moet daar rekening mee houden. Hoe past een diabolo in een voorstelling over de dood?
Nu wordt het even persoonlijk. Als trouwe bezoeker van Theater op de Markt en andere circusfestivals meen ik een tendens te merken. Pakweg tien jaar geleden kon ik hedendaags circus vaak verfoeien. De technieken leken de inhoud, al dan niet van een hoogdravende pseudofilosofische inslag, meer in de weg te staan dan ze te dienen. De val van het arty-farty stond wagenwijd open. Gelukkig merk ik de laatste jaren dat veel circusgezelschappen er wel in slagen om technieken op een integere en zinvolle manier in hun kunst te integreren. Hoe doen ze dat? We nemen enkele voorstellingen van Theater op de Markt 2015 als blauwdruk van het circus van nu.
Casus 1: Fidelis Fortibus vs Aneckxander
Wie het universum van Circus Ronaldo kent, weet dat de dolgedraaide personages, onder leiding van artistiek bezieler Danny Ronaldo, tussen hun fratsen door een subtiele weemoedige reflectie over circus en het leven meegeven. Hoogtepunt van dit verhaal is de huidige voorstelling, ‘Fidelis Fortibus’, waarin Danny nostalgisch terugblikt op het traditioneel familiegezelschap dat Ronaldo ooit was. Een circus over het circus dus. Ook één dat een poëtische boodschap op humoristische wijze bij een groot publiek brengt. Danny jongleert, danst koord en doet goocheltrucs tussen de graven van de circusdirecteur, de trapezist, de ballerina en de muzikanten. Door alles heen is hij ook een clown, wiens onfortuinlijke verhaal gemakkelijk te volgen is. De technieken die hij aanwendt zijn op geen enkel moment geforceerd in het verhaal, maar behouden hun functie die ze in het traditioneel circus al hadden, zij het met één twist. Een klassieke koorddanseres zou met trots en lef over haar koord paraderen, terwijl Danny zich met veel angst van die taak kwijt. Zijn jongleernummer gaat nog verder, het is bedoeld om te mislukken. De technieken dienen het verhaal en de emotie.
De voorstelling ‘Aneckxander’ van danser Alexander Vantournhout en dramaturge Bauke Lievens lijkt heel veraf te liggen van Circus Ronaldo. Toch zijn er ook gelijkenissen. Beide heren spelen solo, beide heren zijn naakt. Danny figuurlijk, Alexander letterlijk. Deze laatste heeft een aparte visie over wat circus voor hem betekent. Waar dans zich als kunstvorm binnen de limieten van het menselijk kunnen begeeft, morrelt circus aan diezelfde limieten. De danssequenties die Alexander brengt, schuiven als vanzelf op naar pure acrobatie op de tonen van minimalistische pianomuziek. Door plateauschoenen, bokshandschoenen en een rolkraag als verlengstukken van zijn lichaam te dragen, maakt hij zijn eigen acrobatie onmogelijk. Dit gaat regelrecht in tegen wat acrobatie ooit bedoelde te zijn. Maar juist daardoor kan enkel acrobatie Alexanders verhaal van het lichamelijk tekortschieten vertellen. Tegelijk toont hij de naakte waarheid van het menselijk lichaam, mooi of lelijk. Op die manier is Alexander ook, net als Danny maar minder opvallend, een clown.
Casus 2: Klaxon vs Azimut
‘Klaxon’ van het Franse gezelschap Akoreacro is gemakkelijk te behandelen in dit relaas. Wat zij brengen is traditioneel circus, weliswaar in een nieuwe verpakking. De muzikanten staan niet braaf op een platform boven het gordijn, maar cirkelen als kometen op drift rond de scène. De artiesten doen niet veel moeite om hun personage in de diepte uit te werken, maar er is geen tijd om ze dat te verwijten. Als vleesgeworden Loony Tunes gooien ze in sneltreinvaart stunts en visuele gags op het publiek af. De virtuositeit van hun circus én muziek in combinatie met een dosis spelvreugde, energie en een enkele knipoog naar Chaplin en Fellini, maakt dat techniek in dit spektakel puur techniek mag zijn. Op een bepaalde manier is dit een heel eerlijke vorm van circus dat dicht bij de bron staat. Dat uitgerekend dit circus een grote publiekstrekker is op Theater op de Markt, verraadt dat de oude behoefte naar verbluffing nog groot is, de dag van vandaag.
Ook ‘Azimut’, van de Franse regisseur Aurélien Bory en de Groupe Acrobatique de Tanger, is een ensemblestuk met acrobatie en muziek van hoog niveau, maar daar houdt de vergelijking met ‘Klaxon’ op. Waar ‘Klaxon’ het vrolijke leven viert, creëert Azimut een impressionistische droom vol symboliek, al is er veel ruimte voor eigen interpretatie. In een voorstelling waarin acrobatie en trompe-l’oeuil-effecten hand in hand gaan, leest de toeschouwer in elk beeld een diepere betekenis. Het narratief en de techniek vallen samen. Hoewel het decor rijk is, zit er een doeltreffende soberheid in de acrobatie. Een ‘radslagnummer’ toont enkel radslagen, trage en snelle. Hoe imponerend ook, blijken de radslagen slechts een manier om iets anders te zeggen. Zoals bij veel kunst het geval is, dringt die andere boodschap binnen langs intuïtieve en emotionele kanalen, en is ze de symbiose van de bedoeling van de regisseur en de associaties van de kijker.
Casus 3: [hullu] vs Wie is het?
‘Show, don’t tell.’ Een oude wijsheid uit de filmwereld waar circus als visueel medium zich doorgaans ook op beroept. De woordeloze voorstelling ‘[hullu]’ van de Franse compagnie Blick Théâtre komt van alles wat ik op Theater op de Markt heb gezien, het dichtst bij een verhaal. Via optische illusies en lichteffecten zapt de kijker tussen de leefwereld en de droomwereld van het hoofdpersonage. In die droom wordt de hoofdrolspeelster ontvoerd door tegelijk gruwelijke en sympathieke poppen met kartonnen dozen. David Lynch in Wonderland, zeg maar. Ook als later de grens tussen droom en werkelijkheid vervaagt, staat de psyche van de jonge vrouw centraal. De makers hebben zich geïnspireerd op research naar mentale problemen en autisme, al werkt de voorstelling ook zonder deze kennis. De hallucinante droomsfeer is een vrijgeleide om circustechnieken te laten spreken. Toch doet de voorstelling er goed aan zich te beperken tot het poppenspel, de magie nouvelle en wat acrobatie. Op natuurlijke wijze krijgt alles een plaats in de logica van het geheel.
Ook jeugdcircus als Zigzag zoekt een eigen manier om techniek en inhoud te verweven. ‘Wie is het?’ verwijst naar het gelijknamige gezelschapsspel. De plastieken plaatjes worden vervangen door de jongeren zelf. Elk spelletje heeft een andere uitkomst, met ander circus als resultaat. Soms leidt het zelfs naar circus pur sang, tussen de scènes door is er plaats voor een trapezenummer. Het stoort niet, daarvoor is het thema te onschuldig. Het is een eenvoudig structurerend element dat extra sfeer toevoegt aan een voorstelling die vooral eenheid vindt in de passie van de tieners.
Bij wijze van besluit
Misschien komt er ooit een tijd waarin circusartiesten net als theateracteurs of orkestmuzikanten het medium worden van een regisseur of dirigent, een schrijver of een componist. Veel van bovengenoemde producties zijn gerealiseerd via een externe regisseur uit het circusveld of het theater. Het laat een frisse wind waaien in het landschap. En ook al heeft selfmade circus[1] zeker zijn bestaansrecht en reeds voor hoogstaande resultaten gezorgd, het lijkt erop dat artiesten met de hulp van buitenaf op intelligentere wijze de techniek kunnen beladen met inhoud. Circus als kunstvorm is echter nog piepjong en neemt soms grillige vormen aan met pieken en dalen. Waar het over tien of twintig jaar zal staan, is niet te voorspellen. In dat geval kun je maar beter genieten van de rit.
