Een Nederlandse bink en een Britse schone ontmoeten elkaar rond 2004 in Bristol, Engeland. Ze trainen samen, worden verliefd, vormen een duo – zowel privé als professioneel. Tien jaar en diverse omzwervingen later hebben ze Gent als uitvalsbasis, voeden ze met veel plezier een tweejarige tweeling op en staan ze aan de vooravond van de première van hun allereerste indoorvoorstelling ‘Inside the box’.
De outdoorversie van die voorstelling, met de toepasselijke naam ‘Outside the box’, stond deze zomer al op enkele festivals. De publieke ruimte vormt de natuurlijke habitat van Wibbe en Vicki Pompe; hun vorige creaties waren de afgelopen jaren te zien op diverse straattheaterfestivals in binnen- en buitenland, zelfs tot Japan toe. Maar nu dus ook een indoorversie, een uur lang, met licht en al. Wibbe Pompe: “Het was sowieso onze bedoeling om een voorstelling te maken voor de blackbox, maar met al onze contacten in het buitencircuit zou het zonde geweest zijn om geen outdoorversie te hebben. We hebben enorm veel zin om de mogelijkheden van een zaal te benutten: licht, sfeer, stilte, details, … Allemaal heel nieuw voor ons. Onze stellage voor luchtacrobatie hebben we verlaagd van 9,5 naar 5,5 meter zodat we in de meeste zalen kunnen spelen. Die verlaagde structuur biedt ons trouwens extra mogelijkheden, bijvoorbeeld bij de counterweightscène: we kunnen veel meer diepte en beweging creëren zodat het een echte verticale dans wordt.”
Jullie hebben de genderproblematiek als thema genomen. Niet bang om in clichés te blijven hangen?
Vicki Pompe: “Het is een heel actueel en tegelijkertijd ouderwets onderwerp en inderdaad, de clichés en stereotiepen zijn erg sterk. Maar wij wilden die juist benutten, vooral in het eerste deel van de voorstelling, om spanning op te bouwen. We bevestigen bepaalde clichés aan de hand van wat we zeggen, maar we ontkrachten die op hetzelfde moment door wat we doen – de acrobatie.”
Wibbe: “Een van mijn favoriete scènes is het moment waarop ik zeg dat vrouwen het zwakke geslacht zijn. Ik zeg dat terwijl ik op Vicki sta en in een vrouw verkleed ben. Maar toch zeg ik het, en dat op zich weekt direct reacties los, vooral bij het vrouwelijke publiek.”
Vicki: “Maar naarmate de voorstelling vordert, zie je meer en meer de echte Wibbe en Vicki, zowel innerlijk als uiterlijk. Je ziet ons. Uiteindelijk zijn we allebei hetzelfde, twee mensen, maar toch is hij mannelijk en ik vrouwelijk.”
Wibbe: “We zijn anders maar toch gelijkwaardig. Dat lost alle spanning op die in het begin is opgebouwd. Spanning die enkel voortkomt uit die stomme stereotiepen, vooroordelen en clichés, maar die toch een kern van waarheid hebben – dat is juist het stomme eraan.”
Hoe strak is het rollenpatroon in jullie dagelijkse leven? Doet Vicki de afwas terwijl Wibbe de vuilniszak buiten zet?
Wibbe: “We hebben elk onze eigen taken in het huishouden, inderdaad nogal conform aan het klassieke rollenpatroon, nu ik er zo over nadenk. Maar onze rolverdeling komt niet voort uit traditionele opvattingen, het kon evengoed andersom geweest zijn. Nu is het vooral een gevolg van praktische overwegingen en persoonlijke voorkeuren.”
Is jullie voorstelling een aanklacht tegen seksisme?
Wibbe: “De voorstelling is geen aanklacht en geen preek. Er zijn al genoeg preken. Het nieuws staat er vol van.”
Vicki: “Maar we spelen wel met de rollen zodat de toeschouwers zelf kunnen beslissen wat ze ervan vinden.”
Wibbe: “Het is een tool om interessant theater te maken. Het raakt meteen een snaar.”
Vicki: “Bij onze vorige voorstellingen kregen we altijd feedback in de trant van ‘Mooie acrobatie. Jullie kunnen goed samenwerken. Zijn jullie een koppel?’ Nu krijgen we serieuze feedback. Mensen worden gestimuleerd om na te denken – bijvoorbeeld naar aanleiding van een passage over borstkanker. Het weekt van alles los, er is veel discussie. Wat kan en wat kan niet?”
Wibbe: “We doen ook een stagefight waarbij Vicki mij op heel overtuigende wijze in de ballen schopt, een stoel tegen mijn neus plant en mij een klap met haar handtas geeft. Sommige mensen vinden dat dat niet kan, dat het onverantwoord is voor de kinderen in het publiek. Al zijn het wel altijd volwassenen zonder kinderen die dat vinden. Ouders met kinderen hebben er meestal geen problemen mee.”
Vicki: “Maar naast discussie maakt de voorstelling ook emoties los. Op het einde wordt er vaak gehuild. De verticale dans brengt ons samen na al die opgebouwde spanning. Dat is een echte ontlading voor veel mensen.”
Wibbe: “Het zijn wel altijd meisjes die huilen.” (lacht)
Craig Weston, bekend van The Primitives, heeft intensief meegewerkt aan de show. Wat was zijn rol?
Wibbe: “Craig is meer dan een coach die af en toe bijstuurt, maar minder dan een regisseur die alle touwtjes in handen heeft. Hij zit daar ergens tussenin. Wij hadden alle ideeën en hebben alle stukken gemaakt. Hij heeft alles in goede banen geleid en ook cruciale beslissingen gemaakt, bijvoorbeeld op vlak van volgorde en spanningsopbouw. En muziek.”
Vicki: “Craig is geen circusman. Het maakt hem niet uit hoe ik Wibbe vasthoud, techniek doet er niet toe. Hij kijkt naar bewegingen, sferen, tekst. Soms vraagt hij iets dat technisch onmogelijk is, maar soms vraagt hij iets haalbaars waar wij nog nooit aan gedacht hadden. Dat werkte echt goed.”
Wibbe: “Na verloop van tijd begin je elkaar echt helemaal te vertrouwen. Tijdens een technisch stuk zei hij soms ‘Dat is een mooi beeld, onthoud dat’, terwijl wij het gevoel hadden dat we iets doodnormaals aan het doen waren. Maar als je dat stuk dan achteraf op video terugziet, met de juiste muziek erbij, zie je dat het effectief om een sterk beeld gaat. Zulke dingen kan je nooit zelf zien als je aan het zweten bent. Dat is het misschien: hij helpt ons om de mooie beelden te vinden.”
Vicki: “Andersom gebeurde het soms ook dat we dachten dat we een prachtige truc hadden en het fier aan hem toonden, maar dat hij zei ‘Nope, werkt niet.’”
Wibbe: “Dat is het ding met circus: je wil zo graag je trucje tonen, maar het moet passen in de voorstelling. Wat komt ervoor en wat komt erna? Heeft de truc op zichzelf al zeggingskracht?”
Wat na deze voorstelling? Kinderen hebben jullie al.
Vicki: “Veel collega-artiesten zijn jaloers dat we in één klap twee kinderen hebben. Ik ben een jaar helemaal out geweest – niet echt goed voor de carrière – maar het was effectief maar één keer één jaar.”
Wibbe: “We spelen met het idee om een kleutervoorstelling te maken.”
Vicki: “Of een walking act.”
Wibbe: “Dingen die we nog niet gedaan hebben. Ik ben momenteel muziek aan het studeren, Vicki leert kostuums maken. We willen onze horizonten verbreden.”
Vicki: “Ook los van het circus zie ik een toekomst. Het lijkt me bijvoorbeeld erg interessant om lactatiekenner te worden: vrouwen assisteren bij het geven van borstvoeding. Alle mama’s worden verwacht van het te doen, en het direct goed te doen, maar het is echt niet vanzelfsprekend. Je moet keihard doorzetten. Ik heb het zes maanden fulltime gedaan, daarna nog vier maanden halftime. De eerste tien weken waren bloed, zweet en tranen, soms alle drie tegelijk. Het zuigt je leeg, letterlijk en figuurlijk. Ik wil naar de mensen toe gaan en hen helpen.”
