Ooit kende het circus succes met een onappetijtelijke stunt waarbij meisjes aan de haren werden opgehangen aan een draaiend rad. Erg gezellig zal die praktijk voor de dames in kwestie niet geweest zijn, maar dat was niet aan hun geforceerde betoverende glimlach te zien. We spreken van een tijd waarin traditioneel nomadisch circus het enige circus was, en de vrouwen die toentertijd glorieus in rode minirokjes aan hun carrousel bungelden, zijn nu oud en weggemoffeld. Het ‘haar-hangen’ – geen kat die zich de echte naam van deze discipline nog herinnert – raakte in onbruik.
Tijd om daar verandering in te brengen. Sanja Kosonen en Elice Abonce Muhonen, twee jonge avontuurlijke zielen van Compagnie Galapiat, waren enkele jaren zoet met het ontrafelen van de geheimen van deze aloude kunst. Het resultaat van dit onderzoek heet Capilotractées, vrij vertaald ‘aan de haren getrokken’, een voorstelling van een uur waarin haar de rode draad vormt.
Het duo begint met een song, waarbij ze zichzelf begeleiden op gitaar en ukulele. Het is een geestige en charmante opening, waarmee de Finse meisjes in krakkemikkig Nederlands en met uitgestreken gezicht het publiek welkom heten. Het lijkt een spektakel te worden dat de techniek van het haar-hangen vervlecht met muzikale comedy. Dat klinkt als origineel en pretentieloos vermaak. En die verwachting wordt ook ingelost, zij het slechts voor de eerste tien minuten van de show. Daarna stapelen de inspiratieloze ideeën elkaar op.
Het haar-hangen zelf, en alle variaties die de meiden erbij presenteren, heeft iets gruwelijk aantrekkelijks. Het begint bescheiden als de artiesten hun weelderige kruinen met elkaar verbinden via twee ijzeren ringen en een musketon. De ene sleept de andere over het speelvlak, alsof ze met haar medespeelster de vloer dweilt. Later in de voorstelling hangen de meisjes vrolijk in balans met hun haren aan een stelling. Ook al lijken ze niet echt pijn te lijden, toch zijn dat de momenten waarbij het publiek op de nagels bijt.
Het probleem van deze productie komt echter naar voren in de momenten dat er geen harige hoogstandjes te zien zijn. De dames slagen er niet in de sfeer van amusante bevreemding, waar het welkomstlied en de dweilscène in baden, vol te houden. De toon van de voorstelling buigt eerst om naar nietszeggende, mogelijk filosofisch bedoelde humor waarbij apathisch wordt gebrabbeld over andermans haar. Even later volgt dan weer een goedkope parodie op het Russisch ballet, iets waar veel circusartiesten zich aan bezondigen, en slechts weinigen goed mee wegkomen.
De eclectische veranderingen van stijl in ‘Calipotractées’ worden extra in de verf gezet door een soundtrack waarbij nostalgische fanfaremuziek en meisjesachtige Finse pop naast elkaar staan. Ook de muzikale bijdrage die de actrices live brengen is zwakker dan bij de aanvang. Ze hebben hun akoestische gitaren verruild voor elektrische en gaan amateuristisch om met een loopstation. In een halfbakken collage van liedjes waar het woord ‘hair’ in voorkomt, lijkt het duo het helemaal op te geven, als ze er een potsierlijke modeshow met pruiken van maken. Ondertussen hebben ook een opgezette fuut en een handpop in de vorm van een rendier hun overbodige intrede gemaakt. Allemaal wanhopige pogingen om het uur rond te maken.
In één van de visuele gags zit het ene meisje verveeld op een stoel, terwijl het andere meisje een kartonnen bord laat zien met de treffende woorden ‘and now what?’ Het leek alsof het publiek in een spiegel keek.
