Canada: land van ijshockey, esdoornsiroop, de Canadese gans en Cirque du Soleil. Tweede grootste land ter wereld. In Montreal – met dik anderhalf miljoen inwoners de tweede grootste stad van Canada – ligt een van de belangrijkste circushogescholen van diezelfde wereld: de Ecole Nationale de Cirque (ENC) of de National Circus School, want Frans en Engels staan op gelijke voet in Quebec, de grootste provincie van het Noord-Amerikaanse land.
Nog weetjes? Jonge wolven Seppe Van Looveren (main-à-main) en Giovanni Maldonado (bascule) volgen er sinds vorig jaar les. Noem dit gerust een unicum, als je weet dat Arno Wauters de laatste Vlaming was die er door de audities raakte – hij studeerde af in 2007.
Hebben jullie ook elders audities gedaan?
Giovanni: “Enkel bij DOCH in Zweden, maar ik heb de volledige auditie ziek afgelegd, dus ik werd niet geselecteerd. Ik had eigenlijk graag op nog hogescholen audities gedaan – niet per se om aangenomen te worden, wel om een zicht te krijgen op de verschillende stijlen en werkingen, en omdat het leuk is om contacten te leggen met collega-artiesten.”
Seppe: “De audities aan DOCH waren eigenlijk veel aangenamer dan in Montreal. Er was veel minder volk, het was veel relaxter, je kon kijken naar de audities van de anderen. Aan ENC waren er zoveel kandidaten dat alles snel en efficiënt moest gaan. De eerste auditiedag duurde 16 uur.”
Wat doen jullie zoal in een doorsnee week?
Giovanni: “Ik zit in een trio met twee Canadezen. Samen hebben we vijf uur per week bascule en zeven uur trampoline. Ik begin afwisselend om half tien en om tien uur en eindig meestal om acht uur ’s avonds. Elke dag krijg ik trampoline, handstand, ‘flex’, grondacrobatiek en bascule. Ik volg ook Frans. Volgend jaar ga ik kiezen voor aerial straps als tweede techniek, zodat ik ook een solo heb en mijn benen wat kunnen rusten.”
Seppe: “Onze dagen kan je makkelijk samenvatten: train, eat, sleep.”
Hoe valt het allemaal mee? Worden de verwachtingen ingelost?
Giovanni: “Waarschijnlijk hebben mijn blessures er iets mee te maken, maar het voelde minder zwaar aan dan gedacht. Dat vond ik eigenlijk wel jammer. Ik dacht dat de school strenger ging zijn. Maar misschien is het een aanloop naar volgend jaar, met meer specialisatie-uren en een extra techniek.”
Seppe: “Ik kan doen wat ik het liefst doe, elke dag opnieuw en met mensen die er ook zo over denken, dus de sfeer op school zit altijd wel goed. De grootste aanpassing was om elke dag te trainen. Alleen vind ik het ook wel iets minder intens dan gedacht. Volgens mij komt dat doordat we vanaf het begin heel hoge verwachtingen hadden. En omdat we een goede voorbereiding hadden op Ell Circo d’ell Fuego, waar men leeuwen traint.”
Na afstuderen word je geheid weggeplukt door een wereldcompagnie. Maar zijn er ook nadelen aan in Montreal studeren?
Giovanni: “Jazeker. De lange en harde winter, de afstand van thuis – snel even over en weer gaan is uit den boze. Het leven is hier duur en ook de opleiding is kostelijk. Inhoudelijk ga ik ook niet altijd akkoord met de manier van werken in ENC, soms zijn de docenten te sturend. Maar ja, meestal weten ze het ook echt wel beter.”
Goeie tips voor jonge talenten die audities willen doen?
Seppe: “Doe nog maar wat pompers! Verzorg je lichaam. Blijven focussen, niet opgeven. Een tip die mij zelf geholpen heeft tijdens de audities: doe alsof je op een podium staat.”
Giovanni: “Meer trainen en ook gericht trainen. Je zwakke punten ontdekken en ze aanpakken – je mag ze zeker niet negeren. Op de auditie zelf moet je er gewoon voor gaan. Je hebt er alles aan gedaan om hier te staan, dus nu moet je voluit je kans gaan. Als je bepaalde zaken niet leuk vindt of niet durft, moet je je erover zetten en het doen zonder al te veel na te denken, anders zal je er nadien spijt van hebben. Als je niet wordt aangenomen is dat jammer, maar zeker niet het einde van de wereld. Misschien was het gewoon nog niet jouw moment.”
