Voor velen klinkt ‘erfgoed’ als ‘iets van vroeger’, ‘oubollig’ of ‘doods’. Het lijkt haaks te staan op vernieuwing, evolutie en artistieke creatie. Maar wat is erfgoed eigenlijk en wat kan het betekenen in een circuscontext? Hanne Ampe, medewerkster van expertisecentrum Het Firmament, geeft de nodige antwoorden.
Dode sporen en levende schatten
‘Erfgoed’ verwijst naar die sporen uit het verleden waaraan een gemeenschap vandaag belang hecht en die het aan de volgende generatie(s) wil doorgeven. Binnen het cultureel erfgoed onderscheidt men het roerend erfgoed van het immaterieel erfgoed. Roerend erfgoed is tastbaar en kan je verplaatsen. Immaterieel erfgoed is niet tastbaar: het zijn gewoontes en gebruiken, kennis en technieken die van generatie op generatie worden overgedragen en vandaag nog worden uitgeoefend of opgevoerd. Immaterieel erfgoed evolueert dus ook mee met de tijd en past zich aan de omstandigheden en generaties aan.
Aandacht voor immaterieel erfgoed kwam er (pas) met de intrede van de UNESCO-conventie ter bescherming van het immaterieel cultureel erfgoed in 2003. Sinds België in 2006 de conventie ratificeerde, heeft de Vlaamse overheid stapsgewijs een beleid hiervoor uitgewerkt. Zo ontwikkelde de overheid onder meer met www.immaterieelerfgoed.be een digitale databank en interactieve website als instrument voor het ‘borgen’[1] van immaterieel cultureel erfgoed in Vlaanderen. Een van de domeinen waarin immaterieel erfgoed zich manifesteert – en dat dus bijzondere aandacht krijgt – is podiumkunsten. Hieronder wordt theater en dans verstaan, maar ook disciplines als figurentheater, mime en circus. Mede onder impuls van deze internationale waardering van het erfgoed van de podiumkunsten betoelaagt de Vlaamse overheid sinds 2012 Het Firmament als expertisecentrum om het podiumkunstenveld te adviseren en ondersteunen bij een duurzame erfgoedwerking.
Podiumkunsten (waaronder circus) worden expliciet in de UNESCO-conventie vernoemd, omdat praktijken en technieken er veelal mondeling en lichamelijk worden doorgegeven, van generatie op generatie. Immaterieel erfgoed bekeken door een circusbril zijn dan verhalen, rituelen, het ‘circusleven’, performances – dan wel ingebed in een repertoire – en de (soms eeuwenoude) circustechnieken. Het zit in de hoofden, lijven en handen van vele gepassioneerde circusmensen.
In Vlaanderen zijn er veel circusmensen die beschikken over unieke kennis, expertise en vaardigheden. Ze hebben eigenhandig hun circus opgericht of zijn de enige personen die de ‘kneepjes van het vak’ hebben doorgekregen van een voorganger, vaak binnen één familie met een jarenlange circustraditie. UNESCO omschrijft deze ‘Living Human Treasures’ als volgt: ‘persons who possess to a very high degree the knowledge and skills required for performing or re-creating specific elements of the intangible cultural heritage’. In sommige landen – bijvoorbeeld Japan, Frankrijk en de Verenigde Staten – bestaan er specifieke ondersteunende maatregelen die ervoor moeten zorgen dat de kennis en kunde van deze ‘levende dragers’ overgedragen kunnen worden aan nieuwe generaties. Bij ons deed tapis plein (expertisecentrum voor immaterieel cultureel erfgoed), samen met Circuscentrum, Het Firmament en andere erfgoedorganisaties in 2014 gerichte beleidsaanbevelingen voor de ontwikkeling van een Living-Human-Treasures-programma op maat van de Vlaamse context (Virtuoos Vlaanderen). Vandaag blijft Het Firmament pleiten voor het opzetten van meerjarige meester-leerlingprogramma’s in de geest van UNESCO, waarbij één-op-één kennisoverdacht ondersteund wordt. Circuscentrum richt de spots op deze bijzondere vakmensen met de reportagereeks ‘Living Circus Treasures’ (2013) en trekt er ook vandaag op uit om de verhalen van waardevolle circusartiesten te documenteren.
Uiteraard is circuserfgoed niet zuiver ‘immaterieel’. Voor, tijdens en na de voorstelling wordt immers heel wat materiaal gegenereerd. Denk aan de vele documenten, in papieren of digitale vorm, die getuigen van het recente of verre circusverleden. Administratieve en juridische documenten doen dit net zo goed als scenografische tekeningen, de artistieke neerslag in spelteksten of bouwboeken voor tenten. Affiches brachten vroeger niet alleen de circussen in beeld maar ook circusartiesten en hun specifieke act. Beeldmateriaal – foto of video – kan een voorstelling prachtig evoceren. Brieven, persoonlijke documenten, krantenknipsels en programmabrochures geven een inkijk in het reilen en zeilen van het artiestenleven. Ook circusattributen, -kostuums en woonwagens kunnen belangrijke getuigen zijn van bepaalde kennis en technieken, trends in het circuslandschap of een bepaalde tijdsperiode. Dit roerend erfgoed vinden we vaak terug bij circusfanaten en individuele verzamelaars, al zijn er ook enkele gezelschappen die dit in ere houden. Ook Het Huis van Alijn heeft een uitgebreide circuscollectie en Circuscentrum bouwt sinds 2001 aan een documentatiecentrum.
Jongleren met het verleden
Podiumkunsten in het algemeen lijken vandaag meer dan ooit bezig te zijn met het inzetten van (hun eigen) erfgoed. Ook binnen circus lijkt er sprake te zijn van een ‘retrotrend’. We zien jonge, hedendaagse gezelschappen – zoals Collectif Malunés – opnieuw experimenteren met tentcircus. Met de voorstelling ‘Nieuw Programma/Nouveau Programme’ bracht Circus Marcel een hommage aan dit traditionele tentcircus, waar ieder jaar hetzelfde programma als een ‘nieuw programma’ wordt aangekondigd. Daarnaast zien we jonge artiesten doelbewust op zoek gaan naar traditionele technieken en deze nieuw leven inblazen. Bert & Fred onderleggen zich bijvoorbeeld in zweeptechnieken en Cie Ea Eo vernieuwt de kunst van het jongleren. Deze circustechnieken worden vandaag niet meer (alleen) in familieverband overgeleverd. Tal van gepassioneerde individuen starten circusateliers op en jongeren van overal gaan naar de circus(hoge)school waar ze technieken anders leren te gebruiken.
Familiecircus Ronaldo is dan weer een mooi voorbeeld van hoe een traditioneel circus een nieuwe wind binnenhaalt. De broers Ronaldo werken vandaag veel meer theatraal in de commedia-dell’arte-stijl. Ondertussen staat de zevende generatie klaar om de circustraditie verder te zetten. Circus Ronaldo staat er ook om bekend bewust met circuserfgoed om te gaan. In voorstellingen gebruikt het bijvoorbeeld oude objecten en decors, zoals de unieke decordoeken geschilderd door de betovergrootouders van de Ronaldo’s. Door deze erfgoedstukken opnieuw in te zetten blijft de oude magie van het circus behouden, volgens Danny Ronaldo. Dat ook het (brede) publiek deze formule weet te smaken bewijst onder meer de selectie van ‘Fidelis Fortibus’ door het Theaterfestival.
De diversiteit waarmee circusartiesten met hun verleden omgaan is opvallend. Maar deze interesse voor het verleden is meestal niet primair vanuit een erfgoedreflex. Hedendaagse circusgezelschappen staan vaak zelfs weigerachtig ten opzichte van de associatie met erfgoed. Omwille van de wens om erkenning als ‘hoge kunst’? Door het stoffige en oubollige imago van het begrip ‘erfgoed’? Toch doen ze aan erfgoedwerking zonder dit zelf zo te benoemen. Met dit aanleren en doorgeven, recycleren, parodiëren en herwaarderen verzekeren ze mee de toekomst van het circus. Circusartiesten maken samen met circusmedewerkers, -kinderen, -vrienden, -verzamelaars en -publiek deel uit van de brede erfgoedgemeenschap die circus en de circuscultuur koestert en verantwoordelijkheid neemt om dit een toekomst te geven. Onder #ikschrijfgeschiedenis roept het Platform voor Immaterieel Cultureel Erfgoed al deze mensen op om foto’s en filmpjes te delen van hoe zij deze tradities of technieken verder doen leven en zo mee geschiedenis schrijven.

[1] ‘Borgen’ is het verzekeren van de leefbaarheid van immaterieel erfgoed. Het houdt onder meer in dat er maatregelen genomen en acties opgezet worden voor het identificeren of herkennen, inventariseren, documenteren, onderzoeken, sensibiliseren en doorgeven van immaterieel cultureel erfgoed. Er wordt in het Vlaamse beleid nadruk gelegd op het doorgeven van het immaterieel erfgoed.
