Op hetzelfde ritme elkaars professionele en persoonlijke leven delen en samen de wereld verkennen, wie wil dat niet? Of is het vooral een kwestie van kunnen? Twee circuskoppels getuigen vanuit het hart én het hoofd.
Dirk Van Boxelaere (41) en Fien Van Herwegen (31) – internationaal bekend als d’irque & fien – toeren met hun magische voorstelling ‘Carrousel des Moutons’ het hele jaar rond. Zowel festivals als cultuurcentra staan op het programma. Ze zijn een duo, een koppel én de fiere ouders van een jonge dochter, die het continue reizen met veel plezier ondergaat.
“Eerst en vooral: het is nooit een bewuste keuze geweest om ‘als koppel’ in het circus te werken. We zijn er letterlijk in getuimeld. We hebben trouwens niet het gevoel dat dit onze job is. Circus is simpelweg ons leven, het omvat alles. Stel: we waren geen koppel, maar we zouden toch samen werken, dan zouden we zeker minnaars zijn. Dus kunnen we maar beter een echte relatie hebben, niet? Het is bovendien onmogelijk om zoals we nu spelen – continu toeren in verschillende landen – géén koppel te zijn. We zouden het niet kunnen bolwerken; ons lief of onze kinderen zouden het niet pikken.
Als we nu op tournee een dagje vrij hebben, kunnen we samen genieten van de stad of streek waarin we ons bevinden. Dat maakt het veel rijker. Tijdens het ‘werken’ beleven we vaak vakantiemomenten. Ook qua organisatie en planning is het gemakkelijk om een koppel te zijn; we voelen elkaar perfect aan en hoeven dus niet om de haverklap te overleggen over bepaalde aanvragen. Bovendien zijn onze karakters zodanig goed op elkaar afgestemd dat we weten wanneer we moeten zwijgen…
We zijn constant samen, een ongelooflijke luxe, maar dat heeft natuurlijk ook een keerzijde. Koppels die elkaar niet zo vaak zien, genieten misschien meer van de momenten dat ze wel samen zijn: restaurantje, wandeling, fietstocht, … Wij hebben daar minder nood aan. Eigenlijk zijn we te verwend. We hebben een fantastisch leven en zouden nooit willen ruilen, maar waarschijnlijk hebben we minder ‘quality time’ dan anderen. Als we vakantie hebben, zijn we thuis aan het behangen of aan het verbouwen.
We hebben een mooi evenwicht gevonden in onze rolverdeling, het vloeit perfect in elkaar over. Ook tijdens creaties, en dat is wellicht cruciaal om het lang uit te houden: we hebben allebei een afgelijnde functie en kunnen geregeld apart repeteren. De ene werkt op circustechnieken, de andere oefent op de piano. Door onze verschillende artistieke mogelijkheden blijven we elkaar verrassen!”
Jan Daems (47) is coach en regisseur van circuscompagnieën uit binnen- en buitenland. Christian Gmünder (ook 47) is circusartiest bij onder meer Les Argonautes, dat de afgelopen jaren met ‘Pas Perdus’ van Singapore tot Seattle speelde. In het dagelijkse leven vormen ze een koppel, maar op professioneel vlak werken ze meestal niet samen.
“Wij staan graag samen in de keuken, houden van alle geneugten van ’t leven en sinds 17 jaar ook van elkaar, maar om elke productie samen te creëren en om dit 24 uur op 24 als koppel te beleven? En-route-de-parcours beseften wij dat dit niet aan ons besteed was!
Op de repetitievloer hebben we elk een andere aanpak en gezien de heftigheid van de thuisgesprekken hieromtrent evenredig toenam met de koppige stiltes, beseften wij dat we ons volledige servies aan diggelen riskeerden te gooien. We beslechtten die strijd met een fles Caribische rum, bekwamen van de kater en werkten verder in afzonderlijke projecten, waarbij we elkaar met raad en daad bijstaan. Resultaat: het deed deugd om de ‘andere helft’ te missen, met huiselijke passie tot gevolg. Ook circus!
Met alle appreciatie voor wie wel samen creëert, zoals onze linkerburen, maar we hebben enkele argumenten om het niet te doen. Wanneer je niet in dezelfde productie staat, relativeer je elkaar, juist door zelf geen betrokken partij te zijn. Hét lumineuze idee zwakt aan de keukentafel wel eens af, net zo goed als die existentiële creatieve knoop. Overigens, het is verfrissend om ‘s avonds ook eens een andere plaat te horen. En wanneer de ene zich afvraagt om toch maar garnalenpeller te worden, gezien z’n schrale vangst op subsidies, beschikt de andere gelukkig nog wel over wat liquiditeiten.
Als partner deel je hoe dan ook alle momenten. Na de ontlading van de première feest je mee, en op de mindere momenten, wanneer één van beide in een moeilijke fase van een productieproces belandt en waarbij slapeloze nachten de hyperventilerende perioden kleuren, steun je op de achtergrond en ben je nodig als vangnet. Wonderbaarlijk hoe die klotedag, die rotproductie, die bolle ego’s of die eigen stommiteiten afzwakken tot een verteerbaar niveau dankzij die andere begrijpende blik, met of zonder rode neus, door een lekkere maaltijd die je opwacht en geserveerd wordt met een schouderklopje of een kus.”
