Circus boomt in Vlaanderen en bij uitbreiding in heel de wereld. Maar hoe is de situatie bij onze noorderburen? Is Nederland een circusland? Wat het traditionele circus en de jeugdcircussen betreft heeft Nederland zeker niet te klagen, maar het circustheater of ‘hedendaagse circus’ staat nog op een erg laag pitje. Al komt daar de laatste jaren met enkele nieuwe festivals en circushogescholen wel verandering in. Dat schrijft Maaike Van Langen, theaterwetenschapper en artistiek leider van Circusstad Festival in Rotterdam.
Naast een aantal theaters die een paar circusvoorstellingen in hun reguliere programmering opnemen, een aantal zomerfestivals waar ook wat (straat)circus te smaken valt, een losse circusact hier en daar bij de grote talentenshows op TV, wordt de flinke circustheatertrek pas echt gestild bij de twee circusfestivals die om het jaar plaatsvinden: Circo Circolo in Brabant (even jaren) en Circusstad Festival in het hart van Rotterdam (oneven jaren).
In vergelijking met Vlaanderen is het hedendaagse Nederlandse circuslandschap bijna net zo vlak als de Nederlandse polders, maar de afgelopen jaren is het circus er wel in een stroomversnelling gekomen. Met twee hogeschoolopleidingen, spraakmakende festivals, groeiende interesse van theaterprogrammatoren en publiek, nieuwe gezelschappen en jeugdcircussen die hard aan het verbeteren van hun kwaliteit werken, ontstaan er kleine heuveltjes die ons een glimp van nieuwe circusvergezichten bieden. Eerst nog even terug in de tijd.
Was het vroeger beter?
Een bijzondere datum in de Nederlandse circusgeschiedenis is 3 december 1887. Dan opent Oscar Carré het Koninklijk Nederlandsch Circus Oscar Carré aan de Amstel in Amsterdam. Het was bedoeld als optreedplek voor circussen in de winter en is een van de oudste nog bestaande stenen circussen van Europa. Het werd in haar geschiedenis verscheidene malen met faillissement en sloop bedreigd. Sinds de renovatie in 2004 blinkt het gebouw weer in al haar glorie. Iedere kerst stuift er zaagsel in de piste en een paar jaar terug was er zelfs een speciaal zwembadje voor de zeeleeuwen in de Amstel gemaakt. In het gedateerde, maar klassieke boekje ’70 jaar circus in Nederland’ van J.A. Best uit 1971 valt te lezen dat alle grote circussen in de eerste helft van de 20ste eeuw Nederland aandeden en dat stad en land uitliep om de exoten en halsbrekende kapriolen van de Sarasini’s, Knies, Barnem & Baileys te komen zien. In die tijd waren ook veel kleinere Nederlandse circussen actief.
Twee belangrijke namen uit de traditionele Nederlandse geschiedenis zijn Circus Toni Boltini en Circus Renz. De eerste was in de jaren ’60 en ’70 een van de grote Europese circussen met een feilloos gevoel voor marketing (hij liet naar verluidt een leeuw ontsnappen voor persaandacht), maar moest in 1980 zijn circus verkopen. Rondreizend Circus (Herman) Renz mocht vorig jaar 100 kaarsjes op de taart uitblazen. Arnold van der Vegt besloot in de winter van 1911 om een eigen circus te beginnen. Renz was vernoemd naar het Oostenrijkse circus Renz, maar om een rechtszaak te winnen zei hij dat R.E.N.Z. een afkorting was voor ‘Ras Echte Nederlandse Zwervers’. Honderd jaar later weten ‘de zwervers’ nog immer succes te boeken met hun traditionele tentenshows in een moderner jasje. Dit circus speelde ook een belangrijke rol in de carrière van de allerbekendste Nederlandse circusartiesten, tenminste voor iedereen die in de jaren ’80 en ’90 opgroeide: Bassie en Adriaan. Maar terug naar het heden.
Zestig jeugdcircussen
Het jeugdcircus, de Nederlandse variant van de circusateliers in Vlaanderen, is in Nederland goed ontwikkeld. Nederland telt een kleine zestig jeugdcircussen doorheen het hele land. Van het vermaarde, al meer dan zestig jaar bestaande Circus Elleboog in Amsterdam tot kleine cursussen in de regio. De jeugdcircussen in Nederland verschillen van grootte en aanpak, maar bij bijna ieder jeugdcircus word er jaarlijks een voorstelling gemaakt. Ook zijn er jeugdcircussen die meer en meer oog hebben voor ‘urban’ cross-overs. Circomundo is de structuur die de belangen behartigt van jeugdcircus in Nederland en zet zich in voor iedereen die zich bezig houdt met circus voor en door kinderen, jongeren en (jong) volwassenen. Ongeveer 60 % van de jeugdcircussen is lid van deze koepelorganisatie.
Dit jaar is voor het eerst de BNG Circusprijs uitgereikt. Het Haagse ‘Circaso’ won met hun plan ‘Licht’. De prijs is ingesteld voor de promotie van het nieuwe circus en dat van het jeugdcircus in het bijzonder en bestaat uit een bedrag van 8.000 euro voor het realiseren van een nieuwe circustheatervoorstelling, speelplekken op verschillende festivals en een professionele registratie van de voorstelling. De circusfestivals in Nederland vinden het allen erg belangrijk om de jeugdcircussen te tonen en denken samen met de opleidingen na over de begeleiding van jong talent. Voor de deelnemers van de jeugdcircussen die de ambitie hebben om door te stromen naar een van de circushogescholen in Europa, in het bijzonder in Nederland, is een speciale talentklas opgericht.
Trotse hogescholen
Nederland telt maar liefst twee academies die opleiden tot uitvoerend circusartiest (BA): Rotterdam Circus Arts (RCA, opgericht in 2006) en de Fontys Academy for Circus and Performance Arts in Tilburg (ACaPA, opgericht in 2007). Op deze scholen komt (vooralsnog) het grootste deel van de studenten uit het buitenland, waaronder verschillende uit Vlaanderen. Beide scholen leiden op tot uitvoerend circusartiest, maar oriënteren zich breed op de praktijk. Omdat beide opleidingen onderdeel zijn van hogescholen waar ook andere kunstdisciplines zijn ondergebracht, worden natuurlijke verbindingen aangegaan met de Conservatoria, Dansacademies en de Rockacademie. Hierdoor zijn projecten mogelijk in samenwerking met andere kunstdisciplines.
Ook bij ACaPA telt niet alleen techniek, maar wordt gekeken naar hoe de kunstvorm constant kan blijven innoveren. Een mooi voorbeeld van die vernieuwing was te zien tijdens de afgelopen editie van Cirque de Demain in Parijs. Twee afgestudeerden van ACaPA wonnen namelijk een zilveren medaille: Lisa Rinne met haar trapeze- en laddernummer en Christopher Schlunk en Iris Pelz met hun partneracrobatie. Codarts mag ook trots zijn op zijn alumni: Tarik Rammo is aangenomen bij Les 7 doigts de la main en Zinzi Oegema schopte het tot de finale van Holland’s Got Talent – weliswaar in duo met de Vlaming Evertjan Mercier, afgestudeerd aan ACaPA.
Jonge festivals
Nederland kent sinds 2007 zijn eerste festival volledig gewijd aan het hedendaagse circus: Circo Circolo. Sinds 2010 mag ook Rotterdam zich met Circusstad Festival op een circusfestival verheugen. Daarnaast wordt sinds 2006 op het waddeneiland Schiermonnikoog tijdens Hemelvaart het kleinschalige festival Circustheaterdagen georganiseerd. Deze ontwikkeling zorgt voor een flinke boost in het circuslandschap.
Circo Circolo presenteert op het sprookjesachtige landgoed Velder in het (piepkleine) Noord Brabantse Liemde in de even jaren tijdens de herfstvakantie een spraakmakende reeks van internationale ‘state of the art’ voorstellingen. Het festival speelt zich af in circustenten van allerlei formaat, met soms uitstapjes van projecten in het bos en het veld. Afgelopen editie was er een speciale ‘Zuiderburentent’ waar de Vlaamse topshows op grote belangstelling van het publiek mochten rekenen. Ook de studenten van de opleidingen en jeugdcircussen treden veel op. Circo Circolo is de grondlegger van een talentontwikkelingsprogramma in Brabant dat de integratie van circus in het regulier opleidingsaanbod stimuleert. Het festival werkt nauw samen met Theater op de Markt in Neerpelt dat in de oneven jaren haar festival heeft.
Rotterdam is zich in rap tempo een profiel aan het veroveren als circusstad. De sector profileert zich veelvuldig tijdens openbare festiviteiten, openingen, festivals en programmering in de beide stedelijke theaters. Hoogtepunt is het tweejaarlijkse Circusstad Festival dat de Nederlandse ontwikkelingen toont in een internationaal kader en dit combineert met activiteiten gericht op talent en participatie. In de programmering zoekt Rotterdam Circusstad naar voorstellingen die stads zijn, rauw, met rafelranden. Bij voorkeur wordt gekozen voor kruisbestuivingen met stedelijke kunstvormen zonder dat de aloude circustraditie helemaal uit het oog wordt verloren. Het festival vindt plaats tegen een decor van wolkenkrabbers in tenten op het Schouwburgplein en in de omliggende theaters.
Het kleinere festival Circustheaterdagen gebruikt het waddeneiland Schiermonnikoog als decor en ruimt een belangrijke plek in het programma in voor talentontwikkeling. Verder besteden zomerfestivals zoals bijvoorbeeld Oerol, Deventer op Stelten, Theaterfestival Boulevard, Buitenkans en Onderstroom aandacht aan circustheater.
Tent & Boost
Het aantal Nederlandse gezelschappen dat zich specifiek richt op circustheater is nog klein. Twee voorbeelden. Een interessant nieuw gezelschap dat afgelopen Eenwielerconventie in Neerpelt voor een volle zaal hun voorstelling LOOP speelde, is TENT (2010). Alumni van DOCH, ACaPA, Codarts en Circus Elleboog creëerden met relatief weinig middelen een ontroerende voorstelling over de twijfels van de keuzes op je levenspad.
De Circuswerkplaats Boost, uit Amsterdam, timmert al wat langer aan de weg. Boost is zowel een jeugdcircus dat in haar lessen evenveel aandacht aan theater als circus besteedt, als een oefenplek voor professionals. Daarnaast initieert en produceert Boost circustheatervoorstellingen. ‘Man met hoed’ (2009), in regie van de beeldende regisseur Jakop Alhbom, en ‘Uitblinkers’(2010), in samenwerking met mimeregisseur Maarten Lok, boekten successen op de zomerfestivals. Bij iedere productie zoekt CW Boost naar nieuwe manieren om circustheater te maken door het te vermengen met dans, theater en mime.
Besluit: waar gaat het henen?
Nu de Nederlandse regering de komende jaren keihard op cultuur kort, lijkt het een allesbehalve florissante tijd om de nog jonge kunstvorm tot bloei te laten komen. Toch heeft het circus een aantal troeven in handen. Het Nederlandse publiek omarmt het nieuwe circus. Eenmaal geproefd van het circus komt men in grote getale terug (blijkt uit publieksonderzoek bij Circo Circolo en Circusstad Festival). Alumni van de opleidingen weten zich internationaal in de kijker te spelen. Toonaangevende regisseurs, choreografen en programmatoren raken bevangen door het circusvirus. En circus leent zich bij uitstek voor talentontwikkeling, een belangrijke term in de beleidsnota’s.
Een andere troef is dat er nog geen structuur was – zoals de productiehuizen – dus er is ook niets te verliezen, alleen maar te winnen. Ook bemoedigend is dat het Fonds Podiumkunsten circus als podiumkunstvorm serieus neemt en aanvragen vanuit de (jonge) circustheatersector toejuicht. Daarnaast is de circuswereld altijd eigenwijs, zelfredzaam, ondernemend, creatief, tegendraads en internationaal geweest, wat prima ingrediënten zijn om een relatief zonnige toekomst te voorzien. Hier en daar lichtbewolkt, af en toe een bui. Maar zonder regen, geen bloemen.
