Op het voorbije Theater op de Markt ging ‘Wonders’van het prille Cie Side-Show in première. Cie Side-Show, dat zijn acrobaat Quintijn Ketels en kostuumontwerpster en scenografe Aline Breucker. Samen vormen ze een vertederend duo, zowel op als naast de planken. Maar al mag hun verhaal lezen als een romantische novelle, ze staan met hun beide voeten stevig op de grond.
Aline en Quintijn leerden elkaar kennen toen hij studeerde aan het ESAC (Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque) in Brussel. Quintijn stond op het punt af te studeren met een collectief werk waarmee hij en zijn klasgenoten uiteindelijk de kiem legden voor het succesvolle Hopla Circus. Aline zocht op dat moment projecten om haar kunde als scenografe en kostuumontwerpster op los te laten. Vanuit haar fascinatie voor het lichaam kwam ze bij circus terecht, en op die manier bij Quintijn. Aanvankelijk sloeg de vonk vooral op professioneel vlak over, maar naarmate hun gemeenschappelijke beeldtaal zich ontwikkelde, werden de twee ook op privévlak een duo. Het duurde echter een tijdje voor ze hun eigen gezelschap oprichtten. En dan nog gingen ze voor hun eerste voorstelling niet over een nacht ijs.
SNELLE START, TERUG NAAR AF
Quintijn toerde na zijn afstuderen maar liefst vijf jaar rond met Hopla Circus en de internationaal gesmaakte voorstelling ‘La Familia Rodriguez’. Maar de collectieve werkvorm met zijn oud-klasgenoten eiste zijn tol.
Quintijn: “Hopla Circus was een collectief van zes mensen die allemaal een andere richting uitwilden. Doordat we elkaar zo goed kenden, groeide daar een unieke vorm uit. Maar die bleek niet gemakkelijk te handhaven. Je evolueert allemaal als mens. Sommigen stichtten een gezin, anderen gingen naar het buitenland. We voelden allemaal dat ‘La Familia Rodriguez’niet voor eeuwig zou kunnen bestaan. Daarom hebben we beslist om nog een laatste tournee in Mexico te doen alvorens er definitief mee te stoppen. Het was een compleet geschift avontuur, maar een mooi eindpunt. Het was een sociale tournee: we hebben ons materiaal achteraf in kleine, lokale circusschooltjes achtergelaten. Daarna hebben we met een deel van Hopla Circus en twee andere acrobaten het collectief Sweatshop opgericht. Maar daar ben ik na de première uitgestapt. Ik heb toen gebroken met de mensen met wie ik al zeven-acht jaar samenwerkte. En daardoor ook met mijn specialiteiten als porteur en bascule-springer.”
Aline: “Dat was een zware beslissing. Quintijn kon eigenlijk alleen maar werken met hen. Zij hingen samen.”
Quintijn: “Ik heb afstand genomen en mezelf in vraag gesteld. Ik moest mezelf opnieuw uitvinden. Dat plaatst je in een heel fragiele positie. De talenten die je dacht te hebben, ben je plots kwijt en moet je op een nieuwe manier herontdekken. Dat is een lang en moeilijk proces geweest.”
De jaren die volgden waren een hobbelig parcours. Quintijn werkte voortaan als freelancer en sprong van het ene project in het andere. Hetzelfde deed Aline: zij werkte mee aan dans-, opera- en circusvoorstellingen, maar voelde stilaan de drang om haar eigen visie op theater in de praktijk te brengen. Om dit te kunnen verwezenlijken, besloten Quintijn en Aline vier jaar geleden hun eigen Cie Side-Show op te richten.
Quintijn: “De side-show is het bijhangsel van het circus, zoals je dat in de late jaren 1800 vooral in de Verenigde Staten vond. Met Barnum and Bailey als grote pioniers. Zij hadden gigantische circustenten waarin vaak gelijktijdig meerdere voorstellingen speelden. Naast de tent had je dan de zoo met de wilde dieren, maar ook een gedeelte met foorkraampjes. Dat was de side-show. Daar kon je de freaks zien: de bebaarde vrouw, de olifantman. Maar tegelijkertijd is daar het bewegend beeld, de cinema uitgevonden. Wij vinden dat een heel inspirerende wereld.”
ARTIESTEN MET EEN GEZIN
Door de overvloed aan binnenlopende projecten kwam Cie Side-Show niet meteen toe aan een voorstelling. Tot de levens van Aline en Quintijn opnieuw ingrijpend veranderden. De geboorte van hun zoontje Antoine vroeg om een nieuwe herpositionering.
Aline: “De grote vraag na zijn geboorte was: hoe kunnen we ons beroep als artiest verder uitoefenen met een gezin? Als we altijd apart aan onze projecten blijven werken, zien we elkaar nooit. Daarom leek ons de tijd rijp om samen ons eigen ding te beginnen doen.”
Terwijl Aline op het kraambed lag, borrelden bij Quintijn de eerste ideeën op. In een boek van André De Poorter ontdekte hij een schets uit 1864 van een plafondwandelaar. Hij wist meteen: dat wil ik ook doen. Niet veel later knutselden hij en Aline aan de eerste maquettes.
Aline: “Ik vond het idee van Quintijn om over het plafond te wandelen heel interessant. Voor mij als scenograaf is het lichaam op scène de referentie. Ik vertrek daarvan om de ruimte vorm te geven. Hier werd dat lichaam plots op een andere manier voorgesteld, en dat werd het uitgangspunt voor de voorstelling.”
Met ‘Wonders’willen Quintijn en Aline de wereld op een nieuwe manier herontdekken. Lichamen worden vanuit nieuwe hoeken belicht, de zwaartekracht wordt letterlijk getart. Maar het kan ook kleiner. Het wonderlijke en poëtische van alledaagse objecten en bewegingen wordt voor het voetlicht gebracht.
Quintijn: “Tegenwoordig moet alles snel zijn. We zappen heel snel weg. Daar wilden we tegen ingaan. We wilden iets maken dat uniek is op dat ene moment. Iets dat alleen maar dan en daar zo kan gebeuren. We willen mensen uitnodigen om op die manier naar de voorstelling te kijken en zo de emotie van de verwondering toe te laten. Ik had opgeschreven: als het eerste sneeuwklokje na een harde winter. Of de geur van vers gemaaid gras. Hier en nu.”
Aline: “Ik vind het altijd jammer in circus wanneer hemel en aarde worden bewogen om de meest ongelofelijke dingen te laten zien. Dan mis ik soms de magie van het theater, waar je met iets heel kleins en simpels iemand even hard achterover kan doen slaan. Iets kan krachtig zijn, ook al spring je geen drie meter hoog.”
ZOEKEN NAAR EEN EIGEN METHODE
Als beginnend gezelschap een eerste voorstelling maken, is iets heel anders dan meewerken aan de voorstelling van een gevestigde waarde. Het verplichtte Aline en Quintijn om op zoek te gaan naar hun eigen manier van werken.
Quintijn: “Aan het begin van zo’n proces sta je met je rug tegen de muur. Je kunt niet terugvallen op wat je al kent. Ik heb al wel voorstellingen gemaakt, maar het is toch altijd anders. Deze keer hadden wij twee het heft in handen. Dat is zoeken. In het begin zie je een bos. Maar dan ga je snoeien en snoeien tot die ene boom overblijft, precies daar waar je hem wilt. Dat is voortdurend beslissingen nemen, zonder compromissen te sluiten.”
In november-december 2012 gingen Quintijn en Aline op residentie bij Espace Catastrophe in Brussel. Daar planden ze een eerste toonmoment, ook al was er nog geen materiaal. Het zou leiden tot het debuut van Aline als actrice.
Aline: “We hebben beslist om veel te tonen tijdens het creatieproces. Om onszelf te testen en om feedback te krijgen. Voor het toonmoment bij Espace Catastrophe dachten we eerst dat Quintijn iets zou doen. Maar terwijl we met materiaal en bewegingen aan de slag gingen, filmden we onszelf. We zijn daarin verder gegaan. We hebben stop motion films gemaakt en zo kwamen we al snel aan een video van tien minuten. Daarin zie je mij tekenen en de tekening wordt steeds groter. We hebben beslist om in die richting verder te gaan en de mogelijkheden van live tekenen te exploreren.”
Voor het eerst moesten er ook keuzes gemaakt worden over met wie Aline en Quintijn graag wilden samenwerken. Als tegenspelers kozen ze voor Elsa Bouchez en Philippe Droz.
Quintijn: “We wilden in de eerste plaats samenwerken met mensen bij wie het gevoel goed zat. De manier van werken vonden we belangrijker dan wat ze konden. Al zijn Elsa en Philippe zeker niet van de minste. Ze hebben aan ESAC gestudeerd en hebben een eigen gezelschap waarmee ze zwaar toeren. Van bij het begin waren ze erg begaan met ons project. Ze waren heel genereus. We hebben aanvankelijk heel open gewerkt, met veel improvisaties. En we hebben de tijd genomen om fysiek samen te trainen.”
Aline: “Om elkaar te ontmoeten. Elkaar te voelen.”
Quintijn: “In dat fysieke zijn we op circustechnisch vlak niet zo heel ver gegaan. Ik ben wel porteur, maar ik doe eigenlijk niet zo veel acrobatie met Elsa. Voor een circusvoorstelling hadden we relatief weinig repetitietijd. We hebben besloten die tijd aan andere aspecten van de creatie te spenderen dan alleen aan techniek.”
WONDERS
Na een snel vervlogen jaar ging de voorstelling in première. Al noemen Aline en Quintijn ‘Wonders’liever een mogelijkheid. Een eerste voorstel van wat Side-Show zou kunnen zijn. En dat is iets tussen theater, dans en beeldende kunst. En circus?
Quintijn: “Elsa, Philippe en ik hebben een circusachtergrond. We hebben circuslichamen. Wat we doen, is sowieso doorspekt met circus. Het is het resultaat van drie jaar opleiding en tien jaar carrière als circusartiest. Wat we doen, is geen theater of dans of plastische kunst. Het is een voorstelling. En ja, laat ons zeggen dat het circus is. Of in ieder geval Side-Show.”
Aline: “Ons gezelschap zal nooit alleen circus zijn. We willen er verschillende kanten mee op. Eind maart spelen we ‘Wonders’opnieuw, op het UP-festival van Espace Catastrophe en dan presenteren we naast de voorstelling ook een tentoonstelling rond het lichaam. Als een intro op de voorstelling. Dat is wel onze bedoeling: om op verschillende manieren interventies te doen. We dromen er ook van een kortfilm te maken, met materiaal uit de voorstelling. Maar niet noodzakelijk in hetzelfde decor. En los daarvan denk ik ook aan een boek, een beeldverhaal. Bezig blijven. Dat werkt motiverend.”
Quintijn: “Ervoor blijven gaan. Het gewoon doen. Geweldige ideeën hebben, is niet moeilijk. Maar zolang je ze niet uitvoert, bestaan ze niet.”
