Twintig jaar nadat Circus Ronaldo benoemd werd tot Cultureel Ambassadeur van Vlaanderen, werd huidig voorman Danny Ronaldo (49) nu bedacht met de hoogste Vlaamse lauwering, de Ultima voor Circus. “Ik ben iemand die makkelijk twijfelt, deze prijs bevestigt dat mijn werk iets doet in de wereld.”
Over Danny Ronaldo wordt in binnen- en buitenland al decennialang in superlatieven gesproken. Een enkeling herinnert zich hem nog als August Patatje maar veel talrijker zijn diegenen die met heimwee terugdenken aan Fili (1999), La Cucina dell’Arte (2002) of Circenses (2009). Of ze herinneren zich Amortale (2014), waarin het marionettentheater een nieuw leven kreeg, en het onvolprezen Fidelis Fortibus, de eerste circusvoorstelling ooit die genomineerd werd voor het Theaterfestival, in de zomer van 2016.
‘Danny is als artistiek schepper een groot architect van circus. Hij weet zichzelf telkens opnieuw uit te vinden, wordt steeds beter én blijft steeds zichzelf. Intussen neemt hij ook een nieuwe generatie circusartiesten onder zijn vleugels.’ Met die woorden legde de jury uit waarom de hoogste Vlaamse cultuurprijs dit jaar wordt toegekend aan Danny Ronaldo. Maar niet aan hem alleen: Circus Ronaldo, dat onderhand bij de zevende generatie is aanbeland, werd evengoed expliciet vernoemd, omdat het ‘bepalend is geweest voor de uitstraling van het Vlaamse circus. Circus Ronaldo is een vlaggenschip (…). Circus Ronaldo bracht circus en theater samen tot een harmonieus geheel, en maakt van elke plek waar de tent neerstrijkt een andere plek.’
Al 48 jaar trekken vader Johnny, moeder Maria en hun kinderen Danny en David met Circus Ronaldo door België, Europa en de wereld. Ze vonden zichzelf opnieuw uit: een klein familiecircus transformeerde tot een vernieuwend gezelschap dat in zijn voorstellingen clownerie, acrobatie, poppenspel en commedia dell’arte, met elkaar verbindt.
Ondertussen doet ook Danny’s zoon Nanosh van zich spreken. Toen zijn voorstelling SWING vorig jaar in première ging, stapelden de positieve reacties zich op. Het mocht zweterig zijn onder het tentzeil, de toeschouwers genoten er niet minder om. Momenteel werkt Danny met zijn tweede zoon, Pepijn, aan een duovoorstelling over hun relatie.
Bedacht worden met een Ultima voor Circus, het is zonder meer een grote eer, maar wat doet zo’n prijs met een man als Danny Ronaldo? “Ik ben iemand die makkelijk twijfelt,” zegt hij. “Ik hou rekening met mezelf en de andere leden van het gezelschap, maar ook met het publiek. En dat genereert best veel onzekerheid. Deze prijs is de bevestiging dat mijn werk erkend wordt, dat het iets doet in de wereld.”
“Je hebt kunstenaars, in alle mogelijke disciplines, die geen belang hechten aan de impact van hun werk op de kijker. Ze doen wat ze moeten doen, vanuit zichzelf. Dat respecteer ik, maar voor mij werkt dat niet. Ik heb mijn publiek heel erg nodig en ben het wat dat betreft helemaal eens met Bertold Brecht. Die zei dat je voor een geniale theatervoorstelling niet alleen bijzondere acteurs en een weergaloze regisseur nodig hebt, maar net zo goed een formidabel publiek. Daarzonder lukt het niet.”
“Aan de andere kant: zo’n prijs is niet meer van deze tijd. Ik geloof dat we ons als maatschappij steeds sterker bewust zijn van het feit dat wat we doen alleen mogelijk is door het feit dat we samenwerken. Dat iedereen bijdraagt. Alleen als de dingen gebeuren op de juiste plek, met de juiste mensen op het juiste moment, lukt het. Elke schakel is even belangrijk.”
Aan de Ultima is een geldprijs van 10.000 euro verbonden. Hoe wil u die centen besteden?
“Dat kan geen probleem zijn: er is immers altijd geld tekort. Met een circus rondtrekken is veel meer dan een afgebakend idee: het is in feite een cultureel centrum en een gezelschap in één. Een circus heeft zijn eigen zaal bij, wat voor extra kosten zorgt. Denk aan het onderhoud van de vrachtwagens, de tent en de woonwagens. Die reële kosten zitten niet inbegrepen in een projectsubsidie. En zo zijn er nog een heleboel dingen. De realiteit is dat je altijd veel minder hebt dan je nodig hebt.”
Gesteld dat u de volgende Ultima voor Circus mocht uitreiken, wie kreeg dan de prijs?
“Ik ben blij dat ik deze keuze niet moet maken. Er broeit zoveel in ons land. Van jong opkomend talent dat grote aanmoediging verdient tot gezelschappen die soms minder bekend zijn in Vlaanderen maar die in het buitenland hun sporen verdienen.”
Op uw website stelt u dat het grootste gevaar voor het circusgebeuren zit in de financiering ervan: projectmatig in plaats van structureel. U schrijft dat een voorstelling daardoor niet meer op een organische manier kan tot stand komen. Nu ziet het ernaar uit dat er inderdaad structurele steun komt. Stelt dat u tevreden?
“Ik zie wel dat de overheid zoekt naar mogelijkheden en heb inderdaad het gevoel dat er beweging in komt, maar we komen van ver. Het heeft tot in 1978 geduurd vooraleer circus werd erkend als cultuurvorm, terwijl theater dat altijd al is geweest. Niemand herinnert zich hoe dat is gegaan. Sommigen proberen die late erkenning van het circus te verklaren met het feit dat het een jonge discipline is, maar dat klopt volstrekt niet. Circus is juist een van de alleroudste cultuurvormen en ook in het verleden hadden we hier veel wereldbefaamde meesters. Niet zelden waren zij eerder succesvol in het buitenland dan hier, omdat ze er meer mogelijkheden kregen.
Die internationale appreciatie is erg belangrijk: neem mijn solovoorstelling Fidelis Fortibus, die in 2017 in Barcelona werd verkozen tot de beste voorstelling van het jaar. Dat heeft ook hier een belletje doen rinkelen en droeg bij aan de bekroning nu.
Het gebrek aan erkenning betekende dat circus erg lang een raar fenomeen was, gezelschappen moesten alles doen om te overleven, het was een combinatie van kermis en commercie. En dat commerciële liet negatieve sporen na. Je kan je overigens afvragen wat het eerst kwam: werd men commercieel omdat er geen overheidssteun was of juist omgekeerd?”
Waarom was het zo moeilijk om circus erkend te krijgen als cultuurvorm?
“Het hoofdprobleem is dat er in de wereld heel veel slechte circusvoorstellingen zijn. Maar tegelijk is er ook veel slecht theater. Het punt is dat circus erg fragiel is, de magie en melancholie gaan snel stuk. Ware poëzie is heel breekbaar.
Bovendien is het publiek in die zogenaamde ‘high culture’ op zoek naar intellectuele dingen, naar inhoud, terwijl het in circus juist om emotionele intelligentie gaat. De inhoud zit in kleine details, de betekenis is vaak het circus zelf en dat is anders dan wat je leest in het programmaboekje.
Een reactie daarop is dat jonge gezelschappen vaak zoeken naar thema’s om te behandelen, ze willen de betekenis in de verf zetten, maar dat is niet altijd een verbetering. Soms blijft het een lege doos.”
U hebt zelf een gigantische weg afgelegd, was u bang het publiek te verliezen?
“Als 16- of 17-jarigen zagen mijn broer en ik een almaar commerciëler circus. Kleurrijk, afwasbaar en kindvriendelijk, genre Bassie en Adriaan. Tegelijk hoorden we onze ouders vertellen over het werk van hun grootouders, de mengvormen van circus en commedia dell’arte waar zij aan deden. Dat was echt en doorleefd. Daarom besloten we samen onze eigen weg te zoeken, wars van alle kitsch. Alleen, de tent moest wel vol. Dat confronteerde je soms heel erg met je publiek.
Gelukkig was er Frans Brood Productions, dat ons uitlegde dat we het elders moesten zoeken, dat we naar festivals moesten, die geen publiek hadden dat wacht op clowns met rode neuzen maar die juist mensen aantrokken met een honger naar de dingen die wij deden.
Maar de commercie is niet weg, wel integendeel. Onlangs ging ik met mijn jongste kind naar Disney on ice kijken, en ik zag het weer. Een mens wordt er onrustig van. Het is fenomenaal hoe het koopverlangen daar wordt aangescherpt, hoe men misbruik maakt van de kinderlijke gevoeligheid, louter om veel geld te verdienen. Ik vind het vreemd dat dit blijft bestaan, dat officieel gelukkig zijn voor een standaardgezin nog altijd kan gaan over het regelmatig bijwonen van dergelijke evenementen.”
Brussel heeft met het ESAC één van de bekendste circushogescholen ter wereld. Is dat van invloed op de kwaliteit van het circus dat hier wordt gemaakt?
“Het is dubbel. Toen ik jong was, waren er geen scholen. Je moest zelf je weg zoeken, makkelijk was dat niet. Tegelijk gaf dat een speciale gedrevenheid aan diegenen die er toch voor kozen. Er lag een grote echtheid in hun pogingen om dingen te leren, te worden.
Ik onderken zonder meer de grote waarde van scholen als ESAC. De huidige opleidingen maken circus evidenter en je leert ook veel meer wat de mogelijkheden zijn. Veel meer mensen kiezen er voor. Tegelijk heeft een school een bepaalde stijl, je kan zien dat iemand van deze of gene opleiding komt, die heeft haar stempel gedrukt, een richting aangewezen.
Wat mij opvalt is dat de scholen sterk gericht zijn op lijfelijkheid en lichaamstraining, terwijl aspecten als theatraliteit of spelen veel minder belangrijk zijn. Als ik de verhalen hoor van jonge mensen die zware blessures oplopen, die hen nog jaren parten zullen spelen, stel ik me de vraag hoe wenselijk dat is. Mijn zoon opteerde na de circushumaniora voor een theateropleiding, en ik geloof dat dat een andere deur opendoet, nieuwe kansen biedt.”
De globalisering zorgde voor een internationalisering van het circus en bracht tal van nieuwe mogelijkheden. Hoe ervaart u dat?
“Dat is niet altijd een voordeel. Het feit dat communicatie nu zo makkelijk en snel gaat, zorgt er enerzijds voor dat je zonder problemen dingen kan regelen met lui aan de andere kant van de wereld, maar tegelijk zorgt die enorme toename van communicatie voor veel nutteloze bureaucratie die artiesten soms verhindert om artiest te zijn. Dat gaat zeker op voor jonge mensen die de mogelijkheid niet hebben om mensen in te huren om die administratie voor hen te doen. Een voorbeeld. Toen we in 1996 voor het eerst naar de IJslandse hoofdstad Reykjavik gingen voor 10 voorstellingen, was dat een kwestie van 5 of 6 verstuurde faxen. Aan het doorsnee optreden in onze buurlanden, of zelfs hier, gaan nu 40 à 80 mails vooraf. Vroeger was er een vertrouwen in de magie en in de mogelijkheden van een compagnie om iets gedaan te krijgen. Nu wordt alles voorafgaandelijk gevraagd.
Er is een vergelijkbare evolutie onder het publiek. Het mooiste aan toeschouwers is hun empathie en nieuwsgierigheid, maar nu zie je dat mensen Facebook checken om te weten wat anderen van de voorstelling vonden. Ze willen een trailer zien, vooraf weten wat het wordt en waarover het gaat. Lijkt het onderwerp hen niet interessant, dan gaan ze niet kijken. Maar zo werkt het niet. Waar het over gaat, is vertrouwen hebben in de magie, je laten verrassen.”
Anderzijds word je als kijker of bezoeker soms ook geconfronteerd met werk waar je niets van snapt tenzij je er vooraf over hebt gelezen.
“Dat klopt, maar dat soort werk interesseert me volstrekt niet. Circus en kunst in het algemeen gaan niet over begrijpen maar over voelen. Verbinding maken. Als dat enkel mogelijk is mits voorafgaandelijke studie, dan hoeft het niet. Ik denk dat de nieuwe mogelijkheden die ons de jongste jaren zijn geboden, ons uit balans hebben gebracht. We weten nog niet goed hoe ermee om te gaan. Maar we leren bij. Ik geloof dat het misschien ook wel weer kantelt en dat we een evenwicht kunnen hervinden. Of tenminste: daar vertrouw ik op.”
