Marie Vandecaveye, erfgoedmedewerkster van het Circuscentrum, bespreekt exclusief voor CircusMagazine een interessant werk uit ons documentatiecentrum. Ligt vandaag op tafel: het lijvige werk ‘Panorama contemporain des arts du Cirque’.
Het Franse HorsLesMurs publiceerde het lijvige werk ‘Panorama contemporain des arts du Cirque’ van Pierre Hivernat en Véronique Klein intussen al een dik jaar geleden. HorsLesMurs is het nationale ‘centre de ressources’ voor circuskunsten en kunsten in de publieke ruimte en is gevestigd in Parijs.
In dit ‘Panorama’ worden op meer dan 600 pagina’s 70 circusgezelschappen of -artiesten belicht. Het gaat voor het grootste deel over Franse compagnieën (Archaos, Cirque Plume, Les Arts Sauts, Baro d’Evel Cirk, Compagnie 14:20, Les Colporteurs, Compagnie Rasposo, Compagnie XY…), maar enkele internationale gezelschappen komen ook aan bod: onder andere Acrobat (Australë), Cirque du Soleil, Cirque Eloize (Canada), Circo Aereo (Finland), Cirkus Cirkör (Zweden), Cahin Caha, The Sugar Beast Circus (USA), No Fit State Circus (UK) en Feria Musica (België).
Het overzicht wordt voorafgegaan door een grondige introductie. De auteurs Pierre Hivernat en Véronique Klein beklemtonen eerst en vooral hoe moeilijk het was te bepalen wie er in dit werk moest voorkomen en wie niet. Dit boek is een antwoord op de vraag welke gezelschappen en artiesten volgens de auteurs een rol van betekenis spelen in het verhaal van het hedendaagse circus. Hivernat en Klein willen met deze publicatie een verpersoonlijkte visie op de hedendaagse circusscène afleveren. Alles wordt nauwgezet gekaderd in de geschiedenis van het circus in de 20ste eeuw. Vooral het Franse relaas komt aan bod, over de successen van Bouglione en Amar, de moeilijkheden die de jaren ‘70 brachten en de evoluties die in Frankrijk leidden tot het ontstaan van hedendaagse compagnieën en circus(hoge)scholen.
Het ‘Panorama’ is niet zomaar een overzicht, maar een dienstdoende poging om het parcours van een artiest of gezelschap te vatten in enkele pagina’s, het creëren, de manier van leven. Dit gebeurt vooral door gebruik te maken van foto’s die met veel zorg gekozen zijn samen met de artiesten. Hun hele leefwereld en carrière wordt vertaald in beelden, onder andere met behulp van jeugdfoto’s. Van verschillende artiesten en gezelschappen worden ruwe schetsen en neergeschreven krabbels getoond die werden gemaakt bij het tot stand komen van hun voorstellingen. Tekeningen van het decor, de enscenering, de kostuums en dergelijke geven een inkijk in het creatief proces. Soms worden de schetsen gevolgd door foto’s van de voorstelling in kwestie, zodat je kan (proberen) vergelijken.
Deze beelden zeggen al veel, maar elke artiest of gezelschap wordt ook netjes ingeleid met een korte geschiedenis van hun carrière, hun ontmoetingen, de keuzes die ze hebben gemaakt. Aansluitend komen ze zelf aan het woord in een kort interview. De auteurs hebben vijf essentiële vragen opgesteld die het een en ander duidelijk kunnen maken over de visie en het traject van de artiesten. De eerste vraag gaat over de betekenis van familie in het leven en werk van de circusartiesten; is er een (denkbeeldige) circusfamilie waar ze deel van uitmaken? De tweede vraag gaat over de traditionele circuselementen zoals een tent en piste, en hoe belangrijk ze zijn voor de artiesten. Welke artistieke disciplines het werk van de artiesten hebben beïnvloed is een derde vraag. Vervolgens wordt er gepolst naar het belang van het lichaam; hoe gaan artiesten om met risico’s en esthetiek, waar liggen hun grenzen? Ten slotte wordt er gevraagd of de artiesten er een credo of idee-fixe op nahouden in hun werk.
Deze vragen liggen in het verlengde van wat er in de inleiding wordt verteld. Het boeit de auteurs mateloos hoe de geschiedenis van het circus het oeuvre en de visie van gezelschappen en artiesten tot vandaag heeft beïnvloed.
