Bolwerk² is een collectief en telt vijf ateliers waar jonge artiesten en technici werken met kostuums, installaties, spel, koken en muziek. De ateliers leveren zowel aparte als gezamenlijke creaties af. Maar bolwerk² wil vooral een productiehuis voor circustheater en straatvoorstellingen zijn.
Ruben Benoit licht toe: “Sinds twee jaar zit onze werking echt wel in een stroomversnelling. Naast de creatie van eigen producties krijgen onze ateliers steeds meer externe opdrachten. Een interessante wisselwerking die onze blik verruimt en onze ambities voedt.”
Jullie laatste creatie heet BouleCarré. Met hapjes, een orkest en straattheater creëren jullie een soort kermissfeer. Komt er ook circus aan te pas?
“Absoluut. Laat het ons maar analyseren: feit is dat we nomadisch zijn, dat we een piste creëren, dat onze muzikanten als circusorkest fungeren, dat we een spreekstalmeester gebruiken… En dan is er nog Victor. Victor is de jongleur uit het rijtje personages dat in onze piste rondloopt. Hij gebruikt in z’n act groenten en keukengerief. By the way, wist je dat begin twintigste eeuw veel restaurants met jongleurs werkten? BouleCarré bevat dus heel veel circuselementen. We benoemen het niet expliciet maar onbewust vertrekken we vanuit circus. Het enige wat misschien nog ontbreekt is een tent.
Het was trouwens een heerlijke zomer met BouleCarré. Veel optredens. Heel leerrijk. Tijdens het toeren konden we telkens nieuwe elementen toevoegen en we scheppen met onze installatie een unieke sfeer waarbinnen performances goed gedijen. Verscheidene externe acts zoals Switch, Toi et Moi, Rola Rola en Maza Loco kregen een plaats in en rond onze piste.”
Jullie bouwden een Volkswagen camionette uit 1976 om tot een mobiele koffiebar en een vrachtwagen uit 1951 tot een mobiel restaurant. Maar in BouleCarré duiken ook personages en decorelementen uit vorige producties op. Nostalgie of gebrek aan inspiratie?
“Zeker geen gebrek aan inspiratie. We koesteren gewoon een grote liefde voor oude voorwerpen en materie met een geschiedenis. En we werken zoals Dogtroep, in Nederland tijdens de jaren tachtig een legende op vlak van locatietheater. Ook zij gebruikten vaak elementen uit vorige producties.”
Compagnie La Machine uit Nantes, dat onder andere de olifant voor Royal de Luxe bouwde, is jullie groot voorbeeld?
“Ja, zij kunnen op een poëtische manier techniek in het straatbeeld introduceren voor een heel divers publiek en ze zijn heerlijk ambitieus. Herinner je maar de doortocht van de Olifant met de Sultan der Indiën en zijn kleine reuzin tijdens de Zomer van Antwerpen in 2006: zevenhonderdduizend toeschouwers volgden hun hemels traject. Maar ook Jean Tinguely en Alexander Calder met hun kinetische kunst inspireren ons. Met machines en mobiles lanceerden zij beweging in de schilder- en beeldhouwkunst. Calder was trouwens gefascineerd door circus en, jawel, we hebben in Parijs zijn overzichtstentoonstelling bezocht.”
BouleCarré, bolwerk²… Een fascinatie voor vierkanten en bollen?
“Daar hebben we nooit zo bij stilgestaan. Misschien een fascinatie voor ongewone combinaties?
Neem nu ‘Le Feu Mécanique’, onze nieuwste installatie…” (Wat volgt is een ingewikkeld verhaal over slijpschijven, vuurwerk en ontstekingsmechanismes met afstandsbediening. “Absoluut veilig,” verzekert Ruben mij.)
