Oog voor dans? Interesse in beeldende kunst? Een zwak voor illusies? Of gewoon nieuwsgierig naar alles wat buiten de lijntjes kleurt? Dan ben je bij Kurt Demey en Satya Roosens aan het juiste adres. Twee nieuwe producties van dit kunstenaarskoppel gaan in 2012 in première.
Kurt Demey is mentalist. Neen, hij haalt geen witte konijnen uit een hoed en heeft geen glazen bol, maar doet aan ‘fucking with the mind’, om het met zijn eigen woorden te zeggen. “De basis is pure verwondering. Ik onderzoek hoe je illusie kan gebruiken op een artistieke manier. Hoe kan ik goocheltrucs brengen zonder er de aandacht op te leggen, en wat gééft dat in een voorstelling? Daarin probeer ik poëzie te vinden.”
Satya Roosens danst. Neen, ze is geen ballerina en is meestal niet op een podium te vinden, maar ze brengt ‘bewegingskunst in de natuur’, om het met haar eigen woorden te zeggen. “Beweging is voor mij een middel om het lichaam iets te laten vertellen, om een menselijke situatie uit te vergroten. De uitdaging bestaat erin om alles te verbeelden zonder woorden. Kurt doet het tegengestelde, hij is een man van duizend woorden.”
Berenklauw
De voorstelling waar Kurt en Satya momenteel aan samenwerken heet ‘Berenklauw’. Een datum voor de première is er nog niet en er wordt nog volop geëxperimenteerd, maar de try-outs beloven alvast een wonderlijke beleving voor het publiek, dat met de handen in het zand mag woelen en pitten planten. ‘Berenklauw’ gaat over het samengaan van lelijkheid en schoonheid, zoals de gelijknamige prachtplant lelijke brandwonden kan veroorzaken. De artiesten laten de wrange én de mooie kant zien van een mens die in de aarde woelt, de cyclus van leven en dood.
Terwijl Satya op een zandtafel danst alsof ze zichzelf aan het planten is, klinken Kurts woorden: “Ge oogst wat ge zaait, zegt men, maar zoveel wordt niet geoogst. Voel de aarde, de cyclus van planten die bloeien, verrotten, sterven tot compost. Het leven neemt energie, het dode geeft.” Op een bepaald moment wordt het publiek met een schijnbaar banale kastanje-illusie uit het lood geslagen, maar tijd om erover na te denken is er niet. “De mensen komen in een andere ruimte terecht. De poort naar poëzie staat open, en vanaf dan kan álles,” aldus Kurt.
Verborgen verhalen
Kurts nieuwste voorstelling ‘Verborgen verhalen’ – zonder Satya – zal niet lang meer verborgen blijven voor het grote publiek: op het Nederlandse Oerol festival (15 tot 24 juni) gaat ze in première. Kurt: “CC Den Blank in Overijse vroeg mij vorig jaar om iets voor kinderen te doen, maar ik ging enkel akkoord als ik volledig vrij spel kreeg. En uiteindelijk is het echt wel tot iets groots uitgegroeid. ‘Verborgen verhalen’ gaat over het moment waarop je als kind niet meer mag geloven, en dat toch mist.”
Het stuk heeft meer om het lijf dan wat je van een doorsnee ‘kindervoorstelling’ zou verwachten. Om te beginnen komt het publiek niet terecht in een gewone theaterzaal of circustent, maar wordt het verwelkomd in een heuse radio-opnamestudio. Iedereen krijgt een koptelefoon en de kinderen maken kennis met de kunst van het radio maken. ‘Sssssst… de lamp brandt, we zijn on air!’ Er worden verhalen verteld over een mysterieuze ‘Quan’ en accordeonnummers voor pratende schildpadden worden aangevraagd. Wanneer de jonge radiomakers dan met een veldradio op tocht gaan in het bos, worden alle natuurwetten overboord gegooid. Bomen komen tot leven en mysterieuze dames zweven boven het zingende gras. De kinderen worden zodanig ondergedompeld in een wonderwereld dat er zelfs geen vragen meer gesteld worden als ze een schildpadje met accordeon tegenkomen.
Wie komt kijken naar deze twee voorstellingen doet dat echter op eigen risico. Je keert onvermijdelijk huiswaarts met een karrenvracht aan vragen zonder antwoorden. Wie de sprong waagt, verliest de grens tussen realiteit en droom uit het oog. Durf je het aan om het witte konijn ook eens te volgen tot in het konijnenhol?
