De Belgische circuswereld heeft zo haar troeven. Een daarvan is zeker dat wij een circushogeschool op topniveau hebben. Alleen al als je het mooie art déco gebouw betreedt, als je de mengelmoes van talen hoort van de studenten die zich hier keihard in het zweet werken… dan voel je dat ESAC of de ‘Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque’ volop internationale faam ademt.
Vanwaar komt de internationale aantrekkingskracht van ESAC? Wij vroegen het aan de nieuwe ‘aanvoerder’ Gérard Fasoli, een voormalig Franse circusartiest die sinds dit jaar de school leidt. Gérard Fasoli: “ESAC heeft zowel op geografisch, politiek als artistiek vlak een zeer goede positie in Europa. De opleiding is geïntegreerd in het Europese BMD-systeem (bachelor-master-doctor, PS) en wordt trouwens al sinds 2003 als Hogeschoolopleiding erkend én ondersteund door het Ministerie van Onderwijs van de Franstalige Gemeenschap in België. We hebben bovendien een sterk en polyvalent team van lesgevers, specialisten uit allerlei disciplines. En ook het internationale werk dat mijn voorganger Philip Haenen als voorzitter van FEDEC (Fédération européenne des écoles de cirque professionnelles) verrichtte, heeft zeker bijgedragen tot de internationale uitstraling en toegankelijkheid.”
Visitekaartje
En wat vond de nieuwe directeur van de laatste lichting afgestudeerden die we tijdens EXIT 8 met open mond mochten bewonderen? “Tijdens de opleiding hebben de studenten heel wat groepsprojecten. Die zijn er op gericht om verschillende disciplines en kunsten te combineren, om in groep te leren werken en hun eigen traject een artistieke betekenis te geven in een groter geheel. Maar tijdens het laatste jaar is elke student ook de regisseur van zijn eigen persoonlijke afstudeerproject, dat nadien als visitekaartje in de artistieke carrière gebruikt kan worden. ESAC staat er dan ook op om dit als een circus act of ‘nummer’ te presenteren. Niet om esthetische redenen, maar wel als ‘bussiness card’ formaat waarin de student voluit gaat om zijn circuscomponent, zijn artistieke en technische expressie samengebald in acht minuten te tonen,” aldus Gérard Fasoli.
Vlamingen
Bij de afgestudeerden dit jaar zijn ook drie Vlamingen: Lennert Vandenbroeck, Jasper D’Hondt en Joren De Cooman. Die laatste twee waren met hun basculeact trouwens al te bewonderen op het Jeugdcircusfestival tijdens de Gentse Feesten. Ook voorgangers zoals Jokke Vanderlinden (Le BoTrio, zie ook p. 13) , Quintijn Ketels (Hopla circus) e.a. kan je op professionele circuspodia aan het werk zien.
Momenteel zijn er nog zo’n zestal Vlamingen bezig aan de opleiding. Niet evident, want zoals gezegd is de concurrentie heel hard. Dat er jongeren vanuit onze circusateliers op dit niveau geraken, is mede ook te danken aan de voorbereidende stage die het Circuscentrum samen met ESAC opzet. Jongeren (15+) met talent én ambitie, krijgen tijdens een vijftal weekends de unieke kans om les te volgen bij ESAC-docenten. Dat lijkt geen overbodige actie, want in sommige landen kan je zelfs een heel voorbereidend jaar volgen.
