Wat in 2001 begon als een Frans onderonsje voor ‘jonge’ talenten, breidde al snel uit tot een Europees project dat de toon zette voor het hedendaagse circus in heel de wereld. De naam evolueerde navenant: van Jeunes Talents Cirque over Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe (JTCE) tot CircusNext. Aan de vooravond van een nieuwe erkenningsperiode blikken we terug en kijken we vooruit met enkele betrokkenen van de laatste jaren. “Weg met de focus op het resultaat. Er moet meer geëxperimenteerd én gefaald kunnen worden.”
Wie ‘laureaat CircusNext’ op zijn cv mag schrijven, heeft een deuropener van formaat binnen. Festivals, cultuur- en kunstencentra zijn niet langer hermetisch beveiligde burchten, maar toegankelijke vrijplaatsen waarvan de deuren als vanzelf openwaaien. Regisseurs, choreografen en dramaturgen staan te popelen om je werk te perfectioneren. Beleidsmakers noteren je naam en droppen hem op internationale congressen en hippe cocktailparty’s. Lichtjes overdreven natuurlijk, maar toch, je begrijpt wat we bedoelen.
CircusNext in een notendop: Een internationale jury selecteert om de twee jaar uit meer dan honderd schriftelijke aanmeldingen een vijftiental gezelschappen die live hun project komen voorstellen tijdens de selectieweek. Hieruit wordt vervolgens een handvol laureaten gekozen; zij kunnen rekenen op zowel financiële, productionele als promotionele steun. Naast een geldsom (bijvoorbeeld voor het betalen van ‘outside eyes’) krijgen de geselecteerde gezelschappen ook residenties bij verschillende Europese circushuizen en zijn er diverse toonmomenten voor professionals. Grote afsluiter is telkens de presentatie van alle laureaten in Parijs: zij brengen er een work in progress van hun voorstelling voor een publiek van artiesten, programmatoren en organisatoren uit heel Europa.
Onder de twaalf laureaten van de eerste editie in 2002 – in circustermen een eeuwigheid geleden – zaten gezelschappen die vandaag nog steeds klinken als een klok: Les Objets Volants, Camille Boitel, Ludor Citrik, Cie 14:20 (pioniers van de magie nouvelle), maar vooral Baro d’Evel, dat enkele jaren later (in 2009) met ‘Le Sort du Dedans’ een van de meest aangrijpende circusvoorstellingen ooit zou maken.
Al van bij de tweede editie, in 2004, waren het trouwens niet enkel Franse projecten die geselecteerd werden voor ondersteuning. Het Britse Ockham’s Razor en zelfs het Vlaamse Cirq’ulation Locale zaten toen ook bij de laureaten. Bram Dobbelaere over die periode: “We hadden ons met ‘Who goes on?’ ingeschreven. Na een eerste selectie op dossier konden we ongeveer 10 minuten aan materiaal tonen op de selectie in de Académie Fratellini. Daarna mochten we naar de ‘finale’ in Parijs, met nog een zevental andere groepen. Voorzitter van de jury was Alain Platel. We waren één van de drie laureaten, kregen een geldsom van SACD – de Franse Sabam – en een tournee van acht speeldata in Portugal. Op die finale hadden we Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui uitgenodigd, en door wat hij daar gezien had wou hij met ons werken om de voorstelling te finetunen.”
Zeker sinds 2006 zijn er tal van in het oog springende laureaten, die zowel artistiek als qua spreiding hoge toppen scheren: Race Horse Company (FI), Cie Defracto (FR), Ivan Mosjoukine (FR), Room100 (HR), Cie Nuua (FI), Iona Kewney (UK), Oktobre (FR), Alexander Vantournhout & Bauke Lievens (B), Cie Ieto (FR), Cridacompany (FR) en Un Loup pour l’homme (FR) om maar enkele te noemen. Als je kijkt naar het soort circus dat zij brengen, zie je bovendien enkele terugkerende kenmerken: absurde en/of subtiele humor, duistere en/of intieme sfeer, zelfrelativering, focus op fysieke uitputting en/of doorgedreven onderzoek met objecten, herinterpretatie van klassieke circuselementen. Bespeuren we hier een ‘Europese stijl’?
Wat ook opvalt is de blijvende dominantie van Frankrijk, ondanks het expliciete Europese karakter van het project. Dit is niet enkel zichtbaar bij de laureaten (ter illustratie: in de huidige editie zijn vijf van de zeven laureaten gevestigd in Frankrijk), ook bij de applicaties. Uit interessante cijfers van CircusNext blijkt dat van de 126 gezelschappen die zich voor editie 2015-2016 aangemeld hebben, 47 uit Frankrijk komen (goed voor 37%). Van de 199 artiesten die daarbij betrokken zijn, hebben 54 de Franse nationaliteit (goed voor 27%).
Maar wat blijkt uit die zelfde cijfers? België is na Frankrijk het belangrijkste circusland! Twee van de huidige zeven laureaten zijn gevestigd in België (Circus Katoen en Motchok). 14 van de 126 aanmeldingen (goed voor 11%) komen uit België; daarmee halen we zilver. En van de 199 artiesten zijn 14 Belg (7%). Enkel de Italianen (en uiteraard de Fransen) doen op dat vlak beter.
Een eigen aanvullende berekening toont eveneens de kracht van ons land. Sinds de officiële omvorming van Frans naar Europees project (in 2009) waren er vier edities, goed voor 28 laureaten. 14 van hen komen uit Frankrijk. Vier laureaten komen uit België: BabaFish, Alexander Vantournhout & Bauke Lievens, Circus Katoen en Motchok. Opnieuw staan we daarmee op de tweede plaats, vóór Finland (drie laureaten), het Verenigd Koninkrijk (twee laureaten) en landen als Kroatië, Spanje, Duitsland, Zweden en Ierland die elk al één laureaat afgevaardigd hebben.
Het besluit dat we uit deze cijfers kunnen trekken: Frankrijk is nog steeds de Eddy Merckx van het hedendaagse circus. Maar net als bij theater en dans is het kleine België, met zijn verscheurd cultuurbeleid, de grootste uitdager; wij zijn de opkomende supermacht in de financieel zwaar ondergewaardeerde circussector. De invloed van een onderbouwd circusbeleid (mét structurele middelen) mag duidelijk niet onderschat worden.
Terug naar CircusNext zelf. Naast de ondersteuning die het aan de laureaten biedt en de speelkansen die het oplevert, is een essentieel kenmerk van het project dat het inzet op circusmakers. In het Frans noemen ze het mooi ‘auteurs de cirque’. Je hoeft geen perfect afgewerkte act te hebben om geselecteerd te worden, wel integendeel. Het draait vooral om de artistieke visie en de potentie van je project. “Het profiel waar CircusNext naar op zoek gaat, is dat van een maker, een auteur, die persoonlijke en unieke voorstellingen creëert. Iemand die diep reflecteert over zijn of haar plaats als artiest in de samenleving, over zijn of haar artistieke taal, over de evolutie van circus in het bijzonder en de podiumkunsten in het algemeen,” aldus Cécile Provôt, huidige directrice van CircusNext.
Daarmee staat CircusNext in schril contrast met de in de circuswereld welig tierende wedstrijdformules als Cirque de Demain, Monte Carlo, Young Stage, … die je bij winst zowel geld, speeldata als bekendheid opleveren, maar die integraal gericht zijn op de klassieke act van zeven minuten. Het siert CircusNext dat het net kansen geeft aan circusartiesten die verder willen gaan, buiten de lijntjes willen kleuren en daardoor nood hebben aan tijd om te onderzoeken en te experimenteren. Relatief nieuw binnen CircusNext zijn bovendien de labo’s die men aan artiesten aanbiedt die net uit de laureatenboot gevallen zijn, maar waar men wel in gelooft. Ook zij krijgen daardoor de nodige stimulansen om te blijven zoeken.
Natuurlijk is het niet enkel rozengeur en maneschijn. Er zijn wel degelijk enkele negatieve aspecten aan een project als CircusNext. Zo zijn de publieke presentaties in Parijs interessant om je netwerk als artiest gevoelig uit te breiden (en als je daar scoort, heb je gegarandeerd een hele resem optredens), maar zorgen diezelfde presentaties voor een prestatiedruk die je in de loop van je creatie kan missen als kiespijn. Julie Descamps, medewerker van Circuscentrum en lid van de jury, verwoordt het als volgt: “Een beetje druk is gezond, maar als je 20 minuten presenteert in Parijs en de bijna volledige sector is aanwezig, dan kan je wel tegen laureaten zeggen ‘Blijf kalm, het gaat maar om een een work in progress’, maar eigenlijk weet je wel beter.”
En vooral: de presentaties als slotakkoord van CircusNext leggen de nadruk wel heel erg op het resultaat in plaats van het proces. Bauke Lievens, samen met Alexander Vantournhout laureaat in 2014: “De publieke presentaties lijken toch vooral gericht op spreiding en op programmatoren, en minder op de noden van de artiesten en de noden van hun respectievelijke artistieke processen. Algemeen gesteld focust CircusNext naar mijn gevoel dan ook te veel op het resultaat en te weinig op het faciliteren en omkaderen van het proces dat een creatie is. Het lijkt toch nog steeds om toerbaarheid en verkoopbaarheid te gaan als hoofdzakelijke criteria. Als platform dat zich expliciet profileert op creatie lijkt me dit een tegenstrijdigheid.”
Inherent aan een creatie is de onvoorspelbaarheid: soms zit alles mee en gaat het vlot vooruit, soms loopt er een wiel af en moet je praktisch van nul herbeginnen. Als je dan in een ‘keurslijf’ van een project moet opereren, met verschillende internationale ogen die jou volgen en een gemeenschappelijke publieke presentatie als orgelpunt, moet je als artiest al heel stressbestendig en zeker van je stuk zijn om daar positieve energie uit te halen. Meer en meer zie je trouwens in de circuswereld dat gezelschappen geen premièredatum vastleggen, net om die vrijheid te behouden om pas naar buiten te treden als je voelt dat het goed zit. Niet zo handig voor cultuurhuizen en festivals die al een jaar op voorhand hun agenda vastleggen (en maar al te vaak willen uitpakken met een première), maar o zo belangrijk voor de creativiteit.
Een grondige bezinning voor een van de belangrijkste Europese circusprojecten van de laatste jaren is aan de orde. En dat is men ook van plan. Het komende seizoen (2016-2017) komt er geen nieuwe oproep voor projecten, wel een ‘European Season of Circus Arts’, waarbij de voorstellingen van verschillende laureaten worden gespreid in diverse landen. Ondertussen wordt er nagedacht over de nieuwe erkenningsperiode, die – als alles goed gaat – in 2018 van start gaat. Cécile Provôt: “Een optie is om voor het ‘platform’-programma te gaan bij de Europese Commissie, zodat we opduikende circusmakers over heel Europa kunnen promoten en hen kunnen helpen bij de internationalisering van hun carrière. Een andere optie is om een aantal bestaande ankerpunten verder uit te diepen: onze steun voor artistiek onderzoek en de labo’s, onze Europese samenwerking en gebundelde ondersteuning voor creatie, en tot slot een eventuele begeleiding tot aan de daadwerkelijke ‘avondvullende’ voorstelling.”
Voor Bauke Lievens is het duidelijk: “CircusNext moet in de toekomst minder focussen op het resultaat, en meer bewustzijn trachten te wekken rond het feit dat een creatie een proces is van vallen en opstaan. Dat kan gebeuren door debatten, workshops – ook voor diegene die wel geselecteerd zijn – en door extra begeleiding. Door de nadruk te leggen op het proces zal er meer geëxperimenteerd, gefaald en gezocht kunnen worden. En zullen de voorstellingen uiteindelijk meer vernieuwend zijn dan nu het geval is.”
Cruciaal wordt het continu centraal stellen van waar het allemaal om draait: de artiest. Julie Descamps: “Zonder artiesten geen CircusNext, geen Circuscentrum, geen festivals. Zij bepalen de route en waar circus naartoe gaat. Een organisatie als CircusNext moet mee zoeken op welke manier ze die artiesten kan ondersteunen, welke gaten er in de sector moeten ingevuld worden. We kunnen en moeten de artiesten uitdagen en prikkelen, maar zij maken uiteindelijk wel het werk.”
Wat is volgens jou de waarde van CircusNext in het Europese circusveld?
“CircusNext brengt hedendaags circus naar landen waar circus minder ontwikkeld is, het zorgt voor een grote zichtbaarheid van jonge circusartiesten en hun creaties, het bouwt een groot netwerk in de circussector. Het project geeft jonge artiesten alles wat ze nodig hebben om hun voorstelling te finaliseren en te presenteren voor het publiek. Hiermee verzekert CircusNext ook de toekomst van hun nieuwe creaties.”
Hoe heb je CircusNext zelf ervaren?
“We hebben het al vaak gezegd en we blijven het herhalen: CircusNext was een life changer voor Room 100. Het zorgde ervoor dat we fulltime circusartiesten konden worden. We kregen eindelijk tijd en financiële vrijheid om ons volledig op de creatie toe te leggen. Sindsdien speelden we onze voorstelling in Europa en Amerika. Nu, zes jaar later, houden we een eigen residentieplek draaiende in Split – de eerste van zijn soort in ex-Joegoslavië – ontvangen we internationale circusartiesten, organiseren we workshops en diverse andere projecten die de circuskunsten in Kroatië bevorderen. Kort gezegd: voor ons was er geen enkel negatief aspect aan CircusNext!”
Hoe moet CircusNext volgens jou evolueren?
“Ik vind dat CircusNext nog meer open moet staan voor jonge artiesten. De eerste selectie op papier is te administratief; veel jonge artiesten zijn daar niet goed in. Er zou een bredere selectie moeten zijn aan de hand van works in progress op het podium. Ook moet de jury grotere risico’s durven nemen, vooral in het kiezen van artiesten uit landen waar circus minder ontwikkeld is – landen waar bijvoorbeeld geen formele circusopleiding bestaat. Dergelijke artiesten kunnen de gevestigde scene veel bijbrengen op vlak van innovatieve benaderingen en ‘anders denken’.”
Hoe maak je een fantastische voorstelling? Welke do’s en don’ts wil je aan jonge makers meegeven?
“Maak vooral een voorstelling die je kan verdedigen, waar je zelf volledig achter staat. Het heeft geen zin om iets intiem of spiritueel te maken als je eigenlijk niet goed weet waar je mee bezig bent. Dan val je direct door de mand. Wil je de technische kant opgaan, zonder een dieper verhaal: geen probleem, doe dat gewoon. Dat is veel eerlijker en volwassener dan te doen alsof er een grote filosofische gedachte achter zit. Een tweede tip: laat je omringen door goede, eerlijke en betrouwbare personen.”
Hoe heb je CircusNext ervaren?
“Achteraf gezien waren de vele twintigminutenpresentaties heel productief voor de creatie. Hierdoor kwamen we in contact met veel interessante programmatoren, en mede door hun reacties kon de spanningsboog van de voorstelling telkens verbeteren. Zo probeerden we voor het eerst het vals einde uit in Great Yarmouth (UK) en bleef het publiek nog een klein uur zitten na de presentatie. Daaruit kan je snel concluderen wat anders of beter kan. Minpunt: men respecteert artistieke gevoeligheden, maar evoluties in het werkproces konden niet meer gewijzigd worden op papier. Dat lijkt heel log. Zo kon Bauke [Lievens] niet als co-auteur vermeld worden, omwille van het applicatiedossier dat ik alleen ingediend had. In dans of theater is het niet ongezien dat een collectief aan een creatieproces start en men niet weet of het nu een solo, duet of kwartet wordt. Ook welke rol aan wie toevertrouwd wordt, blijft in hun creatieproces soms nog onduidelijk.”
Hoe moet CircusNext volgens jou evolueren?
“CircusNext kan in de toekomst misschien minder op spreiding focussen. Net als in ‘zen archery’, waar men uitgaat van het idee dat ‘hoe hardnekkiger je probeert te schieten in de roos – for the sake of hitting the goal – hoe minder je zal slagen.’ Ik denk dat de aangeboden labo’s, de drie- tot vijfdaagse workshops, beter uitgebouwd kunnen worden. Zo kan er misschien een labo zijn rond longevity, mobiliteit en bewegingsbewustzijn. Hierdoor kan onder meer vermeden worden dat talentvolle circusartiesten te vroeg afhaken door blessures.”
Hoe maak je een fantastische voorstelling? Welke do’s en don’ts wil je aan jonge makers meegeven?
“Don’t be afraid to be the weirdo in je circusschool, je collectief, de maatschappij, … Dat is net de kracht van circus. Soms vraag ik me af tijdens het lesgeven: wat als een circusartiest nu eens vanaf het begin een ander object als discipline zou beoefenen (bijvoorbeeld een stok, lepel of tandenstoker)? Dat zou dan een voorbeeld zijn van de weirdo binnen onze kunstpraktijk. Dit gezegd zijnde: in kunst bestaan geen regels, dus doe vooral je eigen ding.”
Welke kant moet circus als kunst volgens jou opgaan?
“De aandacht voor het structureren van trucs of andere elementen in functie van de circusvoorstelling wordt steeds groter. Ik noem deze trend graag ‘focus op circography’. Nog te vaak zien we gekopieerde trucs of een ondoordacht repertoire van bestaande trucjes uitgevoerd in een ander kleedje. Soms vergeten we dat een doordachte truc al heel wat informatie kan bevatten, een expressie en intellectuele of politieke actie kan zijn. Ik denk hierbij bijvoorbeeld aan Philip Petit die indertijd koorddanste tussen de Twin Towers. Anderzijds wil ik critici aanmoedigen om de eigenheid van het circusvocabularium te beheersen. In aankondigingen, verslagen en recensies moet men het niet enkel over de dramaturgie of theatrale capaciteiten van de performers hebben, maar mag men ook de circustechnieken zelf – het pigment van circus – preciezer beschrijven.”
