Zaterdagochtend, de zon is al warm voor de tijd van het jaar. Beetje bij beetje druppelen de jongeren de circustent binnen. Vandaag is het opleiding. Sinds mijn komst hier in de Braziliaanse circusschool Crescer e Viver heb ik die taak op mij genomen. Een hele uitdaging. De jongeren die circusles geven aan de andere kinderen van het project zijn zelf lang leerling geweest en zitten nu in de productiegroep. Ze hebben een zeer grote circustechnische bagage, maar geen ervaring met lesgeven. Mijn taak in Crescer e Viver is deze jongeren hierin begeleiden. De maandelijkse opleiding op zaterdag is hier een deel van. Maar de gasten hebben er niet veel zin in. Ze zijn moe. Na school zijn ze hele dagen bezig met circus: trainen, repeteren en daarna nog drie keer per week vier uur lesgeven aan zeventig straatkinderen. Het is inderdaad een druk programma. Bovendien moeten sommige onder hen ’s avonds bijverdienen om de bus te kunnen betalen.
Vandaag gaat de opleiding over spel en circus. De eerste opwarmertjes verlopen wat flauwtjes. De groep is moeilijk op gang te trekken. Voor hen heeft circus weinig met spelen te maken. Een leerling hoort te gehoorzamen en te trainen en daarmee is de kous af. Ik probeer het op een andere manier, pak een hoop jongleerballen en begin dapper in het Portugees mijn uitleg: “Cada um joga um bolinho numa outra pessoa…” Plots breekt er een lachsalvo uit. De gasten rollen over de grond en het duurt een hele tijd voor ik door heb wat er gebeurd is. Blijkbaar heb ik hen de opdracht gegeven elkaar te bestoken met taarten! Ik heb namelijk het woord bolinha (balletje) verward met bolinho (taartje). De rest van de opleiding verloopt geweldig. De sfeer zit er terug dik in en de jongeren amuseren zich rot. Mijn boodschap over het nut van spelplezier is duidelijk geworden. Op het einde van de dag ben ik een tevreden vrouw!
