Al wie ooit onze noorderburen met een bezoekje heeft vereerd en de autochtonen aldaar heeft kunnen bestuderen, weet het wel zeker: we hebben minder gemeen met dat volkje dan onze taal zou laten vermoeden.
Verstokte Orangisten vergeten soms iets te makkelijk de tulpen, de klompen, de kroketten-uit-de-muur en de neiging om zich bij de minste gelegenheid van top tot teen in een oranje polonaise te verliezen.
Toch hebben we sinds kort ook een belangrijk punt gemeen: de onstuitbare opkomst van het circus. Circusfestivals en -ateliers schieten er net als bij ons als paddenstoelen uit de grond en met ACaPA (Tilburg) en Codarts (Rotterdam) hebben de Nederlanders maar liefst twee professionele circusopleidingen lopen. De grensoverschrijdende banden aanhalen lijkt dus een logische stap.
Meer nog. Nu de Nederlandse regering grondig in het cultuurbeleid is gaan snoeien, lijkt een doorgedreven samenwerking onafwendbaar. We kunnen ons binnenkort verwachten aan een vluchtelingenstroom van onderbetaalde, ondervoede en gedesillusioneerde circusartiesten. Schrijnende beelden doemen op van tentenkampen aan de grens, waar Nederlandse jongleurs en acrobaten, clowns en koorddansers opgevangen worden door Belgische collega’s. Ter plaatse zullen nieuwe voorstellingen gemaakt worden, nieuwe lesgevers zullen worden opgeleid, er zal uitgewisseld worden dat de stukken eraf vliegen en de Belgische en Nederlandse circuswereld huppelen hand in hand een schitterende toekomst tegemoet. … tot België Nederland verslaat in de voetbalfinale van het WK 2014.
