Het fenomenale Europees project Unpack the Arts, waarvan Circuscentrum de fiere projectleider was, is afgelopen. Niet minder dan 120 cultuurjournalisten uit alle hoeken van Europa maakten intensief kennis met de circuskunsten, evenveel artikels staan online te popelen om gelezen te worden. We lieten enkele betrokkenen de balans opmaken van drie jaar circusjournalistiek.
Naast het deelnemen aan de residenties van Hors Pistes en La Piste aux Espoirs (Brussel en Doornik) en van Edinburgh Festival Fringe (Schotland) als expert/gastspreker, verzorgde de Brit John Ellingsworth de eindredactie van alle Engelse versies van de artikels.
Meest indrukwekkende moment?
“Misschien ‘L’Autre’ van Claudio Stellato voor een tweede keer zien, in De Hallen van Schaarbeek. De eerste keer dat ik de voorstelling zag, een tweetal jaar eerder in Londen, vond ik ze stil en verstikkend – ik zie me nog zitten in de zaal, erg bewust van elk geluid dat uit het publiek kwam: een zeteltje dat kraakte, een zucht, een grommende maag. Het was interessant, maar ook redelijk ongemakkelijk en misschien op een manier zelfs angstig of verschrikkelijk – ik was bang om te bewegen. De voorstelling terugzien was veel relaxter, veel grappiger, het leek alsof ik kon meedrijven op het ritme van het stuk zelf. Ik vond zelfs een soort verhaallijn, zonder dat ik ernaar op zoek was. De dag erna ontmoetten we Claudio voor een interview en het was zalig om hem supercharmant en geniaal bezig te zien terwijl hij beleefd weigerde om ook maar iets van de voorstelling uit te leggen of te karakteriseren.”
Je hebt alle 120 artikels gelezen. Wat zeggen ze jou over het hedendaags circus van tegenwoordig?
“Het doel van het project was om culturele journalisten – in veel gevallen voor de eerste keer – bloot te stellen aan hedendaags circus, dus veel artikels vertellen dat circus is geëvolueerd tot voorbij het populaire imago, dat het niet langer draait rond fietsende olifanten en dansende beren. Ik denk dat als je alles zou lezen, je dan een gevoel zou krijgen van een internationale circusgemeenschap. Je zou zien dat de festivalprogrammatoren enerzijds artiesten van verschillende nationaliteiten uitnodigen en anderzijds dat er artiesten/gezelschappen zijn die verschijnen op meer dan één festival – je zou dus een beeld krijgen van deze artistieke uitwisseling.
In het algemeen vertellen de artikels je dat hedendaags circus esthetisch divers is, maar tegelijkertijd zou je als lezer voelen dat de sector enigszins gedomineerd wordt door Scandinavische en Franse artiesten en door voorstellingen die conceptueel ‘naar binnen’ kijken, die gaan over het onderzoeken van circus zelf.”
Welke onderwerpen keren steevast terug?
“In elke residentie waren enkele dominante onderwerpen of ideeën, maar dat is eigenlijk normaal: het ging telkens om tien mensen die schrijven over dezelfde voorstellingen, met dezelfde interviews en groepsdiscussies als basis. Ook al gebruiken ze verschillende invalshoeken in hun artikels, je kan duidelijk zien wat de hoofdpunten uit het debat waren en welke artiesten het meest in trek waren.
Enkele terugkerende ideeën: circus heeft niet veel regisseurs en heeft nood aan regie/dramaturgie; risico is een essentieel element in een circusvoorstelling; hedendaags circus is niet zo goed als hedendaagse dans – hier parafraseer ik, het was de geheime boodschap van de meeste danscritici; circus mist kritische/theoretische ecologie; Yohann Floch is ofwel een edele herder ofwel een strenge leermeester. Alle journalisten pushten voor de erkenning van circus als een hedendaagse kunst met een complexe identiteit of aanvaardden dit toch impliciet.”
Welk artikel of onderwerp vond je het meest verrassend?
“Eentje dat blijft hangen is het artikel waarin ‘Wunderkammer’ van het Australische gezelschap C!RCA vergeleken wordt met pornografie. Dat was er knal op. Of er was een schrijver die de esthetiek van Aurélien Bory’s ‘Sans Objet’ relateerde aan ontdekkingen in de kwantumfysica – dat verbaasde me in die zin dat het een combinatie van onderwerpen was die letterlijk nog nooit in mij opgekomen was.”
Bruce Dessau (London Evening Standard, VK): “De residentie in Brussel gaf veel voldoening en was intellectueel stimulerend. En erg intens. Het meest indrukwekkende vond ik de mogelijkheid om serieus te praten over circus met zoveel andere journalisten uit Europa. Er zijn te weinig circusjournalisten in Groot-Brittannië om dat hier mogelijk te maken.
Ik leerde veel over circusgeschiedenis en over hoe circus verschillend is op bepaalde vlakken, maar ook zo gelijkaardig over de hele wereld. Ik ben alleszins van plan om meer over circuskunsten te schrijven; ik heb mijn cultuurchef bij de London Evening Standard gevraagd om circus meer aan bod te laten komen. Circus moet zeker erkend worden als een kunstvorm als theater of dans. Ik denk trouwens dat dat in de nabije toekomst al zal gebeuren. Projecten als Unpack the Arts dragen hier sterk toe bij.”
Marie Painon (freelance journaliste, FR): “Mijn verwachting was dat ik door de residentie in Auch (Frankrijk) van circus zou gaan houden, een kunstvorm die ik met moeite kende. Maar helaas, de voorstellingen hebben me niet verleid. Op dat vlak voel ik me wel wat gefrustreerd. Langs de andere kant, hoewel mijn passie niet is gevoed, is mijn brein dat wel. Ik ben nu minder onverschillig tegenover de kunstvorm die hoe langer hoe meer zijn plaats opeist binnen de hedendaagse artistieke creatie. Toch blijft het jammer dat de programmatie niet representatiever was voor alle goede dingen die de circuskunsten zeker ook voortbrengen.”
Andreea Stiliuc (Romanian Television TVR, Roemenië): “Unpack the Arts is een van de beste projecten waar ik ooit in betrokken ben geweest. Het ontmoeten van cultuurjournalisten en het ontdekken van een kunst zo oud en tegelijkertijd zo nieuw was een buitengewone kans. Ik hield van de discussies met de artiesten. Het meest indrukwekkende moment was de voorstelling ‘Sans Objet’ van Cie 111, een schitterende oefening in het temmen van mens en machine.
Hedendaags circus is een kunstvorm die de kracht heeft zichzelf heruit te vinden, en het heeft alle kansen om als zodanig erkend te worden over heel de wereld. Maar wat is de essentie van circus? Wat is de rol van het verleden? Wat doet het hedendaags circus met de feeërieke stof waaruit circus al altijd bestaan heeft en die verschillende grote kunstenaars heeft gefascineerd, gaande van Picasso tot Charlie Chaplin? Kan de brutaliteit van verandering niet vertaald worden als een eeuwige vitaliteit van (her)uitvinding?”
