Lothar Grob is sociaal assistent en professioneel geschoolde clown. Hij reisde drie maanden door Cambodja en bezocht er ziekenhuizen, weeshuizen, sloppenwijken, vuilnisbelten en dorpen om er een glimlach te toveren op de gezichten van de plaatselijke jeugd. Een impressie.
“En daar sta ik dan, bleekscheet met rode glitterneus, te kijken naar honderd gezichtjes. Allemaal wachtend vol spanning wat die vreemde man met rare kledij nu gaat doen. Sommige zelfs angstig, blik naar de grond als ik hen in de ogen kijk. Maar ze mogen gerust zijn, bleekscheet is ook bang. Langzaam kom ik op gang, stilletjes aftastend wat de draagkracht van de groep is, alle zintuigen op scherp. Ik heb me tussen de kinderen gezet, waarom weet ik niet. Misschien hoop ik onbewust dat iemand anders het podium zal betreden en aan mijn show zal beginnen. Zodat ik ongemerkt via de achterdeur terug het vliegtuig kan op springen.
En dan vind ik een vriend… in de vorm van een opgepropt zakdoekje. Achteloos op de grond gesmeten tijdens het eten en nu mijn steun en toeverlaat in deze show. Ik ga op mijn hurken zitten en roep het, alsof het een lief poesje is. De wind brengt Propje dichterbij en het publiek lacht en staat tegelijkertijd met verstomming te kijken naar de interactie tussen Propje en bleekscheet. Dat Propje een natuurtalent is, wist ik nog niet. Propje doet haar best. Ze springt mooi van de ene hand naar de andere en is in staat zich volledig weg te toveren. Maar Propje is ook koppig en besluit plots dat het genoeg is geweest. Gelukkig belt mijn rechterschoen mij op, net zoals elke slipper in het publiek, allemaal mooi voor de kinderen binnen mijn bereik.
En zo gaat het nog een uurtje verder. De interactie met mijn schoen wordt een interactie met de vele toeterende vrachtwagens. Mijn diabolo valt, net zoals het doek, en badend in het zweet groet ik de breed glimlachende kinderen. Na een korte pauze haal ik de motorbanden tevoorschijn en maken we in groepjes van drie jongleerballetjes. De kinderen blij, bleekscheet blij en Propje blij.
En zo gaat het er ongeveer elke keer aan toe de laatste drie dagen. Vader Koy Heang, schouder van ngo Spie-En, kijkt me aan. “God has blessed you with a gift, my son. A gift to make children smile. And I thank you for that.” Koy is vader van vijf kinderen en grootvader van twee kleinkinderen. Als pastoor van de protestantse kerk in Cambodja nodigt hij mij uit in zijn kerk. Niet om gewoon de mis bij te wonen, maar om zijn apostelen mee te laten genieten in wat hij ‘The Smiling Program of Spie En’ noemt. En zo staat bleekscheet op zondagochtend 7 uur in de plaatselijke kerk in gevecht met een plastieken flesje op het podium voor een honderdtal ouderen. De kinderen volgden voor de mis al een ‘hoe maak ik van drie ballonnen en zand een leuke jongleerbal’ workshop. De mensen lachen, bleekscheet blij.
Uw tuinhuis is chic, mijnheer
Ik kan honderden foto’s en filmbeelden met jullie delen, maar om écht te begrijpen hoe de mensen hier leven, daarvoor moet je zelf komen kijken. In de stad is een gemiddeld maandloon 150 dollar. Hier op het platteland zijn mensen arm als ze minder dan 300 riel (5000 riel = 1 euro) verdienen per maand. Ik ontmoet een vrouw met aids, die haar drie kinderen moet onderhouden met 128 riel per maand. Haar man is vorig jaar bezweken ten gevolge van aids.
De voorbije drie dagen reed ik over zandwegen waarin menig offroad 4×4 zich zou vast rijden. In het midden van wat ik jungle pleeg te noemen, duiken de verschillende dorpjes op. Overal kleine hutjes van nog geen twintig vierkante meter groot. Eén leefruimte voor gezinnen van zeven tot tien mensen. Eén ruimte waar gekookt, gespeeld en geslapen wordt. Een veredeld tuinhuis. Grote en kleine behoefte doe je in de vrije natuur (je weet toch waarom je iemand met je rechterhand begroet?). Je wassen aan een grote pot voor je huis. Al heeft wassen weinig nut. Het zand overal, de hitte en het feit dat je in het beste geval twee outfits hebt, maakt het quasi onmogelijk om proper te blijven. Geen elektriciteit, geen stromend water. En dit is dan jouw dagelijkse leven. Je bent niet aan het kamperen of op bivak, nope, dit is hoe jij dag in dag uit leeft. Welkom in Cambodja, bleekscheet.”
