“O lijf, o heerlijk circuslijf, ik weet met mijn superlatieven geen blijf. Gespierd en lenig, Gij staat altijd paraat, al stretch ik U zelden, en slaap ik te laat. Gij rent en Gij springt, valt en staat op, gratie en kracht, het kan maar niet op. Al zijt Gij soms moe, gekwetst of doodziek, toch doet Gij verder, want daar wacht het publiek.”
Het circusleven is er één van pijnen en pijntjes. Het is – afhankelijk van de gekozen circustechniek – een opeenvolging van ingescheurde nagels, afgerukte eeltlagen, overbelaste knieën en verschoven wervels. “Minstens drie weken rust,” zegt de dokter dan. “Absoluut,” antwoordt de circusartiest. Om twee dagen later alweer onder de spots te staan, op een dieet van adrenaline en pijnstillers, desnoods ingetapet als een mummie. Ja, soms wint de goesting om te spelen het van het gezond verstand.
Een beetje artiest leert in de loop der jaren beter naar zijn lichaam luisteren. Toch geeft een circuslijf soms, ondanks alle conditietraining, rust en uitgebalanceerde voeding, een circuscarrière een beslissende wending. Zonder gebroken pols géén Morgan-Cosquer-de-voetjongleur. Zonder die vervelende enkels zagen we Arne Sabbe nu niet als geweldige voltigeur door de lucht zweven.
Soms beslist een circuslijf zelfs, versleten na jaren of plots geblesseerd, om een circuscarrière te fnuiken. Een verplichte heroriëntering dringt zich dan op. Een moeilijke stap en dus voor wie zich vertwijfeld afvraagt welke richting hij of zij uit wil, deze gouden tip: circusmasseurs, circuskinesisten en circusdokters zijn altijd welkom. “Een halfuurtje rust,” zegt de circusdokter dan, en met een knipoog schuift hij de illegale pijnstillers over de toonbank.
