Wie roue Cyr (uitgesproken ‘roe sier’) kent, heeft ongetwijfeld al eens moeten denken aan de ‘Vitruviusman’ van Leonardo da Vinci. Je weet wel, de blote man in een cirkel die de ideale lichaamsverhoudingen schetst. Hij moet alleen nog maar wegrollen en hij kan naar het circus. Of toch niet: geef hem eerst een exemplaar van dit lexicon ter inspiratie, samengesteld door collegae die reeds vele avonturen in een draaiend rad hebben beleefd.
Cartwheel Een radslag vertaald naar roue Cyr: de artiest rolt zijwaarts overkop tot hij terug in staande positie uitkomt (vb).
Center spin De artiest draait in zijn wiel ter plaatse om zijn as (vb).
Coin spin De roue Cyr valt voorover en zal blijven draaien als een muntstuk op een tafel. De artiest moet vooral vermijden dat zijn vingers onder het wiel belanden en tijdig op de grond springen (vb).
Cola Mocht de vloer te glad zijn voor roue Cyr of German wheel, kan je die insmeren met verdunde cola om niet uit te schuiven (aw).
Duizelig Behalve blaren op de handen moet de artiest leren omgaan met duizeligheid. Opvallende vaststelling van (av): ‘Anders dan bij acrobatie, ervaarde ik trouwens dat het aangenamer draaien is met een volle maag dan met een lege.’
German wheel Bij German wheel worden twee enkele wielen verbonden met elkaar door dwarse buisjes. Dit gevaarte, dat tussen de 35 en de 50 kilo weegt, neemt niet alleen veel plaats in op het podium, het is ook lastig om trappen mee op te gaan of door deuren te trekken. Verder heb je gegarandeerd problemen met een German wheel op het vliegveld bij de douane (aw).
Inox Een roue Cyr is gemaakt van ijzer of van inox, zelden van aluminium. Meestal wordt er een pvc-buis getrokken over het rad, een intensief werkje waarbij een hogedrukcompressor wordt gebruikt om de pvc te laten uitzetten alvorens die straks als een kous rond het rad zit (av).
Instinct Kennis van het lichaam, van zwaartekracht en middelpuntvliedende kracht zijn van belang voor de artiest, al gaat het meer over een instinctief aanvoelen hiervan dan om theorie (av).
Manipulatie Roue Cyr is één van die disciplines waarbij de toeschouwer constante beweging ervaart. Bij het creëren van een nummer is het een stevige uitdaging om meer te doen dan rond te draaien en figuren of trucs te tonen (av). Veel artiesten verkennen daarom andere bewegingsvormen met het rad (met handen, voeten, hoofd,…) dan de klassieke draaiende techniek. Voorlopig vallen die nieuwe vormen onder de noemer ‘manipulatie’ (vb).
Paranoia De ondergrond is van groot belang voor artiesten met een roue Cyr. (vb) heeft vele nachtmerries gehad over de vloer waarop hij moest spelen. Van water, kaarsvet, dauw, rijst of confetti op het podium tot vloeren die allesbehalve waterpas of vlak zijn.
Sprong Artiesten met een roue Cyr spreken van een ‘sprong’ als ze vanuit de center spin omhoog springen en op de armen steunen zodat het bovenlichaam boven het draaiende rad uitsteekt (vb).
Superman Tijdens een center spin laten de benen het rad los en hangen ze naar achteren. Enkel de handen houden het wiel nog vast en door de centrifugale kracht komen de benen niet tegen de grond, zodat het lijkt dat je vliegt als Superman (vb).
Tang Premature sporen van roue Cyr zijn terug te vinden in de Chinese Tang-dynastie, rond het jaar 700. In het begin van de twintigste eeuw werden in Duitsland allerlei variaties hierop uitgetest (av) en ook de vermaarde danseres Doris Humphrey (1895-1958) duikt in oude foto’s op met een rad (vb). De term ‘roue Cyr’ kwam er in pas in 1998, toen de Franse artiest Daniel Cyr zijn recherche met het wiel presenteerde in Cirque Eloize en het festival Cirque de Demain (av).
Tic-Tac Een repetitieve beweging waarbij de artiest door wisselende druk in linker- en rechterbeen het rad heen en weer laat schommelen, terwijl hij voor zich uit blijft kijken (vb).
Vuist De diameter die een roue Cyr moet hebben is afhankelijk van de lichaamsbouw van de artiest, maar in de regel is dat een vuist meer dan zijn lengte (av).
Walz Soms wordt de basisbeweging de ‘Walz’ genoemd. Deze doorlopende draaibeweging, waarbij de artiest in het rad staat en dat constant laat roteren door het lichaamsgewicht van links naar rechts te verplaatsen, is het vertrekpunt van meerdere trucs. Het verschil met de center spin is dat het rad niet ter plaatse draait (vb).
Zitje Het moet niet altijd een duur woord zijn: bij German wheel is een ‘zitje’ een zithouding op een van de buisjes die de twee wielen verbinden met elkaar. Een andere truc is de ‘Cody’ of ‘dubbele Cody’: de artiest draait in een soort tuimelbeweging rond het buisje (aw).
