Circusartiest Hans Vanwynsberghe (Cie Balltazar, ShakeThat) verving enkele maanden terug een paar lessen van Klaas Pattyn, de vaste lesgever van de circuslessen binnen Aura, een tweede-kans-onderwijsproject in Kortrijk. Zijn eerlijk relaas van een moeilijk proces.
“Godverdomme, ‘t is geen waar, omleiding. Ik was al te laat vertrokken en nu blijkt hier op vrijdag een of andere velokoers te zijn in Harelbeke. Zo geraak ik nooit op tijd in Aura, het tweede-kans-onderwijsproject in Kortrijk. Ik moet toegeven dat ik er vandaag ook net iets minder zin in heb. Ik geef er nog maar twee weken circusles en gezien iedereen houdt van Klaas, de vaste lesgever, maken de leerlingen het me niet makkelijk. Ze weten ook dat vervangers niet alle spelregels kennen. ‘Van Klaas mogen we voetballen als opwarming en sigaretten roken in de pauze.’ Geen idee of dat waar is of niet, maar van mij mag dat allemaal niet en dus ging de hele groep vorige les dwarsliggen waardoor ik uiteindelijk de circusles moest staken.
Ik kom uiteindelijk tien minuten te laat aan, net wanneer de middagronde er op zit. Het is de eerste keer dat ik die ronde niet mee doe en dat vind ik jammer. Het is een ideaal moment om elkaar te leren kennen. “Wie bewonder je?” was vorige keer de vraag. Ik vertelde over Modou, die ik vorige maand leerde kennen toen ik circusles gaf in Senegal. Hij had het moeilijk thuis en school was ook zijn ding niet. In Senegal zijn er geen Aura’s die dergelijke drop-outs een tweede kans geven en zo werd hij een van de duizenden straatkinderen van Dakar. Er zijn wel enkele centra die zich inzetten voor de straatkinderen, maar het zijn druppels op een hete plaat.
Vandaag zijn er maar drie die circusles volgen. Ze hebben blijkbaar meer zin dan de groep van dinsdag. Ik krijg de ladders met moeite de minibus in omdat Jason en Geoffrey al willen oefenen. Hun goesting lijkt op die van de circusleerlingen in Dakar, bij Sencirk. De leerlingen trainen er elke dag keihard en beseffen hoeveel geluk ze hebben dat ze die kans krijgen. Het grote verschil, of dat vrees ik toch, is het doorzettingsvermogen. Ik ben blij dat de gasten van Aura nu al willen oefenen, maar ik hou mijn hart vast of ze na een kwartier nog zin zullen hebben. In Sencirk trainen die jongeren uren aan een stuk, elke dag. Voor opgeven is er geen plaats.
Alle drie vliegen ze er in. David jongleert al met vier ballen, Jason wil de ladder onder de knie krijgen en Geoffrey probeert het touw. Het doet me deugd dat ik niet moet trekken en sleuren of politieagent spelen. Ik loop in een driehoek en geef telkens wat tips. Voorlopig blijven ze alle drie dooroefenen. Oké, dit loopt perfect, maar hoe lang gaan ze dit volhouden?
Modou had het geluk in een opvangcentrum terecht te komen en kreeg er twee weken circusles van enkele Zweden. Hij was gebeten en bleef verder trainen om het jaar erop de teruggekeerde Zweedse lesgevers met verstomming te slaan. Nog twee weken les en opnieuw een jaar zelf trainen. Tijdens de derde stage werd hij opgeleid tot lesgever en daarna startte hij zelf een circusschool op. Geen geld, geen zaal, alleen aan straatkinderen was er nooit tekort. Zelf wat materiaal knutselen en vooral keiharde kracht- en lenigheidstraining zodat de kinderen salto’s kunnen springen zonder een trampoline of valmat.
De aura’s geven voorlopig niet op. Geoffrey ligt zonder handen op het touw. De vierbal-truc van David begint te lukken en Jason maakt vooruitgang op de ladder. Nu de eerste trede lukt, traint hij op de tweede.
Sencirk biedt ondertussen een job aan drie mensen en binnenkort komen daar nog een vijftal jonge artiesten bij. Het was niet eenvoudig, vanuit de straat en zonder enig onderwijs, maar Modou’s doorzettingskracht heeft het gehaald. Zo iemand bewonder ik enorm. Hadden de jongeren in Vlaanderen maar zo veel doorzettingsvermogen…
Jason moet en zal de ladder onder de knie krijgen. Als hij stopt, is het om even op adem te komen en zijn zweet af te kuisen. De tweede en zelfs de derde trede zijn al geen probleem meer. Nu moet hij leren van één naar twee te stappen. De nieuwe vierbal-truc die ik David aanleer is te moeilijk, maar hij geeft niet op. Het is een belangrijke truc om later vijf ballen te jongleren en dat motiveert hem. Wanneer ik naar Geoffrey kijk die er in slaagt om eventjes op het touw te staan (wellicht de allereerste ooit in Aura) en mijn duimen opsteek, komt ook David kijken en applaudisseren. Pauze is niet nodig. Ze trainen verder. Wanneer ze moe zijn, kijken ze bewonderend naar de anderen die nog meer hun best doen. Jason houdt ondertussen al zijn evenwicht op de vijfde trede. Iedereen traint verder.
Dit is Aura niet. Dit is niet het Aura dat ik ken, waar ik alles uit de kast moet halen om de jongeren te motiveren. Waar ik al blij ben als iedereen het een kwartier volhoudt en ik daarna iedereen apart kan motiveren om nog iets anders te proberen. Dit is zelfs geen Vlaamse circusschool, waar de ideale jongeren les volgen. Dit is een werkspirit die ik in Vlaanderen nog nooit zag. Het doet mij deugd, veel deugd om dit mee te maken. En ze blijven maar trainen en vooruitgaan. Doorzetten zoals ik tot nu toe alleen in Senegal zag! Bedankt voor de mooie momenten.”
