Jesse Huygh (22) is een mens die leeft voor drie. Twee jaar geleden studeerde hij af aan ESAC (Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque) met als specialisatie de Chinese paal. Sindsdien zit zijn carrière in de lift. Hij maakte zelf voorstellingen in eigen land, maar tartte ook de zwaartekracht in een circusperformance in Zweden, trad in Canada zes maanden lang elke avond op voor 3.500 man en trainde in Guinee op zijn eentje vijfenveertig Afrikaanse circusartiesten. En dat allemaal terwijl een levenslange ziekte, mucoviscidose, zijn longen teistert. Maar dat motiveert hem juist om te blijven bewegen.
Afrika Afrika
Jesse vliegt voortdurend heen en weer: van Antwerpen naar Canada, van Afrika naar Rotterdam. Het scheelde dan ook niet veel of we hadden hem gemist. Wanneer we aankomen bij zijn ouderlijk huis in Mortsel doet niemand open. Gelukkig blijkt Jesse vlakbij te zijn: in Antwerpen, roofing aan het leggen op het dak van circusschool Ell Circo d’Ell Fuego. Gelukkig, want wij dachten dat hij al was opgeroepen naar Duitsland, waar hij verder zal werken aan ‘Afrika Afrika’: een zinderende circusshow die de energie van het zwarte continent loslaat op een Europees publiek. Sinds februari vloog Jesse maandelijks naar Guinee om daar telkens twee weken met vijfenveertig Afrikaanse artiesten te werken. Niet altijd even gemakkelijk, zeker niet toen bleek dat de acrobaten niet eens allemaal dezelfde taal spreken.
Jesse Huygh: “Van de tweeëntwintig artiesten die voor de voorstelling zijn geselecteerd, zijn er twaalf Tanzanianen en tien Guineanen. De Guineanen spreken Susu en Frans, de Tanzanianen Swahili en Engels. Dus ik moest tolken tussen hen. Maar sommigen knikken dan wel en doen alsof ze je begrijpen, maar je weet dat er niks van waar is.
De acrobaten met wie ik werkte, zijn allemaal als circusartiesten begonnen omdat ze niets anders konden doen. Maar op zich hebben zij geweldige lichamen om mee te werken. Het gaat heel snel vooruit. Alleen clean werken is moeilijk: ze zijn vaak slordig. En je moet rekening houden met hun situatie. Guinee is een van de drie armste landen ter wereld. Sommige leerlingen hadden geen geld om een taxi te betalen. Ze kregen wel een klein budget, maar dat gaven ze liever aan hun ouders. Ze stappen liever twee uur naar de training als hun gezin daardoor iets meer te eten heeft. Twee uur stappen, van negen uur ’s ochtends tot vier uur ’s middags zwaar trainen, even uitrusten en daarna weer twee uur terug. Zes dagen op zeven. Dan moet je als trainer aanvaarden dat ze niet altijd evenveel energie hebben. Gelukkig is onze werktijd in juni afgelast, want toen was het ook nog eens ramadan. Dan zou je niet van negen tot vier kunnen werken.
Soms was ik wel blij dat ik er geen maanden aan een stuk zat. Ik stond daar elke dag alleen voor vijfenveertig man, in een onbekend land met een andere cultuur. Het is veel informatie die binnenkomt. Soms mocht ik niet naar buiten omdat er manifestaties waren. Dan zie je vanaf je balkon een grote massa en mannen met machinegeweren. Maar qua cultuurshock ben ik toch vooral benieuwd naar hoe het voor hen zal zijn wanneer ze naar Duitsland komen. Vanuit een land waar ze niks hebben naar plots acht maanden op Europese tournee in viersterrenhotels.Dat wordt een hele aanpassing.”
Carrière in Chinese Paal
Wanneer hij spreekt, zie je een jonge man die bruist van energie. Jesse moet leven, moet bewegen. Dat is hem met de paplepel ingegeven. Als peuter begon hij te turnen, vanaf zijn negende nam hij deel aan wedstrijden. Op zijn dertiende kwam het circus in zijn leven. Na het zien van een voorstelling van circusschool Estropov wist hij: dat wil ik ook doen. Via Estropov kwam hij terecht bij Ell Circo d’Ell Fuego en dat zou zijn leven verder bepalen. Daar werd hij immers geïntroduceerd tot zijn grote liefde: de Chinese paal.
Jesse: “Ik probeerde de Chinese paal een paar keer uit en vond het leuk. Ik merkte dat het mijn ding was. Aanvankelijk was dat puur voor de sport en ontspanning, maar vanaf mijn vijftiende begon ik via het circusatelier mee te doen aan straatanimaties en optredens. Ik verdiende mijn zakgeld door te doen wat ik leuk vond. Dankzij circus heb ik nooit achter een toog moeten staan.
In het laatste jaar middelbaar moesten we aan de Steinerschool een eindwerk maken. Voor mijn praktijkexamen heb ik een voorstelling ineengestoken, waarvan ik nu nog steeds een aangepaste versie speel: ‘Ciel au mat’. Dat is een straatvoorstelling met een grote aanhangwagen met daarop een Chinese paal, en daarnaast nu een celliste, vroeger een pianiste. Mijn theoretisch eindwerk was een vergelijking van de verschillende circushogescholen.”
De stap om zelf aan een circushogeschool te starten, lijkt dan ook klein. Dankzij de steun van zijn vrienden bij de circusschool waagde Jesse zijn kans bij de audities aan ESAC. Hij werd toegelaten en startte zijn opleiding onder de begeleiding van de Chinese docente Lin Mei. Zij hielp hem te specialiseren in de Chinese paal. Wij vroegen ons af hoe inventief je als artiest kan zijn aan zo’n paal. In hoeverre volg je een standaard programma, in hoeverre kan je daarvan afwijken?
Jesse: “Er is een bepaald vocabularium aan bewegingen dat algemeen bekend is. Van schroef tot een bolletje, van salto tot vlag. Maar daarnaast heb je een enorme vrijheid om onderzoek te doen naar nieuwe bewegingen. Doordat het niet zo’n heel oude techniek is, valt er nog veel te ontdekken. In het derde jaar aan ESAC heb ik vooral gezocht naar nieuwe variaties. Soms is dat hard werken. Zo wou ik een salto eindigen met mijn twee voeten op de paal. Dan sla je elke keer met je scheenbeen tegen die paal tot je de juiste plek op je enkel hebt gevonden.
Voor mijn eindwerk, ‘Hurricane’,heb ik onderzoek gedaan naar een combinatie van Chinese paal en sangles. Ik heb daarvoor met een bevriende technicus een rol-element ontwikkeld dat rond de paal kon draaien. Daarop zat een oog waaraan een strap hing. De combinatie van Chinese paal met andere disciplines is dus zeker ook een mogelijkheid. Een vriend van me combineert kegeljongleren met de Chinese paal. In principe is alles mogelijk.”
Het eigen ei
Na zijn opleiding kon Jesse al vrij snel aan de slag bij het Canadese Cirque Eloize. Zes maanden lang leefde Jesse een leven vol luxe: veel reizen, elke avond spelen voor een volle zaal, logeren in hotels. Maar kan je als artiest je ei kwijt in zo’n megaproductie?
Jesse: “De voorstelling waarvoor ik was aangenomen, ‘ID’, bestond al langer. Het nummer lag dan ook vast: de richtingen, de hoogtes, de snelheid. Maar ik kon wel de technische bewegingen aanpassen naar mijn stijl. Zolang het maar dezelfde uitstraling en timing had. Maar soms raak je de motivatie om elke avond dezelfde show te doen wel wat kwijt. Zeker als het niet je eigen stuk is. Je hebt het niet zelf gevoed en het is ook niet per se je eigen smaak. Dan moet je blijven vernieuwen voor jezelf. En het plezant maken door backstage flauwe grappen uit te halen. De groep van Cirque Eloize was echt oké.
Eén van de dingen die ik zelf wil realiseren, is een monodisciplinaire Chinese paal-voorstelling. We zijn nu met een paar vrienden aan het aftasten wat de ideeën zijn. Wat willen we doen? Wie doet er mee? En dan de vraag: hoe geraak je aan geld? Kan je meteen doen wat je wilt, of moet je eerst een korte versie maken en daarmee toeren om de langere versie te financieren?
Met Ell Circo d’Ell Fuego blijven we ook broeden op dingen. We zouden ooit met iedereen van de oorspronkelijke leerlingen die op circushogeschool zijn gegaan een collectief willen starten. Er zijn er veel die zijn uitgewaaierd. En allemaal worden we nog steeds door de Fuego’s gesteund. We kunnen er altijd terecht. Het is een beetje mijn tweede familie. Mijn circusroots.”
Levenslang ziek
Plannen zijn er genoeg, te veel zelfs om te kunnen realiseren. Misschien zal op een bepaald moment de mucoviscidose ook roet in het eten gooien. Maar daar ligt Jesse niet te veel van wakker. Geen enkel mens weet hoeveel tijd hem nog rest. Iedereen gaat door zolang hij kan. Maar toch beïnvloedt de ziekte zijn werk behoorlijk.
Jesse: “Door de muco heb ik een heel slecht uithoudingsvermogen. Gelukkig valt dat redelijk goed te rijmen met wat ik doe: korte, zware inspanningen met veel pauzes. Die onstabiele ritmes vergen niet zoveel uithouding. Niet zoals fietsen of lopen. Bij Cirque Eloize heb ik er wel lang over gedaan voor ik de volledige act plus de choreografieën ademhalingsgewijs kon volhouden.
De locatie bepaalt ook veel. Toen ik in Mexico City speelde op een hoogte van zo’n 1.500 meter, stond er backstage een zuurstofpomp klaar. Even bij-ademen en dan op scène doen alsof er niks aan de hand is. Afrika was daarin ook niet de makkelijkste ervaring. Het was regenseizoen, wat wil zeggen dat de lucht warm en vochtig is. De laatste drie keer kwam ik thuis met hoge koorts. Dan moet je doorbijten.
Maar ik ken zelf mijn grenzen heel goed. Ik weet wanneer ik extra medicatie nodig heb of wat meer oefeningen moet doen. Dat is al zo vanaf mijn geboorte, dus ik ben het gewoon. Het grote gevecht is om zo lang mogelijk stabiel te blijven. Want muco is op lange termijn degeneratief. Nu heb ik 65 procent longinhoud tegenover de gemiddelde mens. Vijf jaar geleden was dat nog 75 procent. Ik probeer vooral zo hard mogelijk de kleine ziektevallen weer te revalideren. Soms is dat wel beperkend. Ik zit elke dag zowel ’s ochtends als ’s avonds een uur aan de medicatie. Als je een lange reis maakt, moet je jezelf afvragen hoe je dat gaat doen. Op het vliegtuig? En op tournee moet er altijd een koelkast worden voorzien voor mijn medicatie. Maar dat is iets waarmee je gewoon rekening moet houden. Ik ben het gewend.”
Jesse laat zich niet zomaar tegenhouden. Hoe meer hij aan circus doet, hoe meer hij beweegt en hoe beter voor zijn ziekte. Hij leeft erop los en grijpt alle kansen die hij krijgt.
Jesse: “Ik ben blij dat ik de vrijheid heb om nieuwe dingen te blijven ontdekken. Na Cirque Eloize had ik even geen zin meer om te toeren, dus dan heb ik een half jaar les gegeven. Hopelijk blijf ik het geluk hebben dat de juiste mensen mij weten te vinden.
Het circusleven is misschien onzeker, maar wel heel interessant. Ik weet nu niet wat er mij over een paar maanden te wachten staat. Maar dat stoort mij niet. Ik hoor in oktober wel wat ik in november zal doen. Misschien hang ik dan wel in vlag aan de Eiffeltoren, dat zou ik graag ooit willen verwezenlijken. Hebben jullie daar toevallig connecties…?”
